Informal business enterprises and their impact on the sustanability of the city of PietermaritsburgNgcaweni, Beauty Nobahle January 2000 (has links)
Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Masters of Arts in the Department of Geography at University of Zululand, South Africa, 2000. / There has recently been an increase of clusters of informal business operators in different parts of the city of Pietermaritzburg. Allegations have been made that street vending causes pollution of the environment in the city and that it was an illegal activity associated with crime and other anti-social activities that were inimical to formal business enterprises and the viability and sustainability of the city of Pietermaritzburg.
This dissertation was conducted in the context of Agenda 21 of the Rio Earth Summit which advocates for sustainable development of business enterprises, which governments worldwide were persuaded to adopt in their development planning policies. The Pietermaritzburg-Msunduzi Transitional Local Council (TLC) has recently initiated a move to implement the Local Agenda 21 programme as advocated by the Rio Declaration.
The main aim of the dissertation was to examine the impact of the informal business enterprises on formal business and the environment, and thereby determine the sustainability of the city of Pietermaritzburg.
It was found in this dissertation that street vending was related to the high rate of unemployment in Pietermaritzburg, and that both males and females in their productive years were involved in street vending. Informal businesses were found to be partially responsible for littering and environmental pollution in the city by generating litter from the items they sold on the streets. It was also found that many of the street vendors lived in squalid informal settlements or on the street pavements which contributed to the pollution of the city's environment. It was found that their actions resulted" from an involuntary and necessary condition of poverty. The Street vendors were actually actively engaged in cleaning up operations and environment education in accordance with local Agenda 21.
The informal business enterprises were found to be recognised legal activities that cooperated with formal business, the city council and other stakeholders in the fight against environment pollution and crime. It was found that there was a complementary relationship between formal and informal business, which did not jeopardise formal commerce and industry and the sustainability of the city of Pietermaritzburg.
It is argued in this dissertation that, with more positive encouragement and assistance, the informal sector is an essential means of alleviating the problems of unemployment and poverty. Guided in the correct direction, the informal business enterprises are a way of promoting the viability, development and sustainability of the city of Pietermaritzburg.

Exploring the factors that prevent home based to grow in South AfricaLerefolo, Sampisi Lawrence 14 July 2012 (has links)
This research explores the factors that impede the growth of retail home based enterprises in South Africa. The potential contribution of home based micro and small enterprises (MSEs), or Spaza shops to generating income and employment to people in the informal sector of the economy is becoming increasingly recognised. This paper provides the primary data which consists of a non-random sample of 47 Spaza shop owners and managers in the four different areas (old establishments, new establishments, informal and reconstruction and development programme (RDP)) in the township of Mamelodi, applying a quantitative research methodology. The level of human capital, gender, and entrepreneurial mindset of the proprietor are found to have an inverse relationship to the firm’s growth. Economic and socio cultural experiences of female entrepreneurs in Brazil and the United States : an exploratorial and empirical analysisHolland-Noronha, Neila January 2010 (has links)
Over the last twenty years female entrepreneurs have been increasing in numbers in economies of developing and developed nations across the world. But although female entrepreneurship participation rates have increased worldwide, it appears that economic and socio cultural patterns still prescribe whether a female can become or want to become an entrepreneur in her society. Some reasons are obvious such as lack of employment and opportunities; other are disguised in patriarchal culture that deters female entrepreneurship. Against this backdrop it appears that in less developed countries necessity and informal entrepreneurship are more prevalent than opportunity entrepreneurship. An explanation from economic nature for this phenomenon is perhaps the fact that with less job opportunities available in developing nations, the ‘need’ to become an entrepreneur seems to be the answer for females to make a living by creating their own jobs. At the socio cultural level, the motivation to become an entrepreneur out of need surfaces because of the socio cultural structure of certain nations that hinder females from finding work that brings them independence, self actualization and flexibility for work-life balance. This qualitative exploratory study investigates the phenomenon of female entrepreneurship comparing female entrepreneurship in two contexts: Brazil and the United States. The economic differences on a macro level between these two countries have been well documented and national socio cultural differences have been discussed. But very little has been focused at the individual level of the female entrepreneur per se, that is, how they perceive and experience the economic and the social cultural macro environment with their businesses. This research attempts to fill this gap. This was done by first reviewing the literature and then by analysing the responses from face to face and telephone interviews with 34 female entrepreneurs in Brazil and 26 in the United States. The findings indicated that female entrepreneurs in Brazil and the United States share similarities in motivation for starting the business in terms of pull factors, such as search for financial independence, want to be one’s own boss, need for autonomy, and self actualization. The women from both groups also identified customer satisfaction and recognition from society as key elements for their business success. But business informality was a phenomenon only found among the Brazilian enterprises (the informais) a factor found to be directly related to economic necessity and the scarcity of waged jobs and opportunities. The perception of gender barriers was shared by both groups of entrepreneurs but other factors such as religion and the importance of faith to succeed in business were emphasized only by the Americans. Higher education was perceived by both groups as an instrument to gain recognition from society, but not important to grow their businesses; vocational training was perceived as more important. Networking was perceived as important, but different patterns of networking emerged among the Brazilians and the Americans. Definitions of success also differ among the women independent from their nationality. Some were more inclined to define success in financial terms, others simply define success in terms of flexibility and the ‘got to be in control’ syndrome. This research contributed to an increased understanding of the processes of female entrepreneurship as it related to how economic and socio cultural forces influence these processes. The findings indicated that the female entrepreneurship process becomes a combination of two processes: a person driven process and a response to environment process. Mentoring and coaching programs that assist women finding their path to entrepreneurship along with their own passions should be emphasized by local agencies. Although policy development was not the specific objective of this study, a number of issues have arisen that have implications both for future research and female entrepreneurship policies. For instance, in Brazil, higher taxes and the high cost of starting a business were perceived by the women as barriers to their businesses. It is suggested that Brazilian authorities and legislators continue with their efforts to streamline the business start process by introducing innovative and cost effective ways to formalize a business.

Programa Empreendedor Individual : uma avaliação preliminar na perspectiva dos empreendedores. / PROGRAM "INDIVIDUAL ENTREPRENEUR": a preliminary assessment from the perspective of entrepreneurs.Vianna, Marco Otávio dos Santos 06 August 2012 (has links)
To encourage the micro businesses formalization, it was created a law in Brazil from 2009, of Individual entrepreneur-EI, which seeks primarily to minimize the vulnerabilities of the informal economy. From a unified action across the country, it was offered to individual entrepreneurs special conditions for business be formalized. This study aims to analyze the perceptions of entrepreneurs with respect to the Individual Entrepreneur Program in Sergipe and check how this influenced the results of their business. Specifically this study has the objective to draw entrepreneurs profile, define the characteristics of formalized businesses through the EI program, identify entrepreneurs perceptions with respect to changes in enterprises and describe the results achieved by entrepreneurs after participates on EI program. Survey was conducted with three hundred Individual Entrepreneurs who joined the program since its inception in Sergipe, June 2009. The information was collected through structured questionnaires applied personally with entrepreneurs. Data were analyzed through descriptive statistics and the results were compared to other research on the same program carried out in Brazil. It can be verified that the program in Sergipe achieved significant results, among them: adherence to program allowed the increase in sales by access to new markets and expansion of the supply of its products, in addition allowing entrepreneurs to hire labor to support business activities. Also highlights that the formalization of business also facilitated credit access to entrepreneurs. However, the participation of EIs in government purchase is still incipient, because they still do not recognize this sales as a large revenue potential. / Para incentivar o a formalização os micronegócios, entrou em vigor no Brasil, a partir de 2009, a Lei do Empreendedor Individual - EI, que busca principalmente minimizar as vulnerabilidades da economia informal. A partir de uma ação unificada em todo o país, passou-se a oferecer condições especiais para os empreendedores individuais para que seus negócios fossem formalizados. Este estudo tem como objetivo analisar as percepções dos empreendedores com relação ao Programa Empreendedor Individual em Sergipe e verificar como essa adesão influenciou nos resultados de seu negócio. Especificamente teve como objetivo delinear o perfil dos empreendedores, definir as características dos empreendimentos formalizados através do Programa EI, identificar as percepções dos empreendedores com relação às mudanças nos empreendimentos e descrever os resultados percebidos pelos empreendedores após essa adesão. Foi realizado survey com amostra de trezentos Empreendedores Individuais que aderiram ao programa desde a sua criação em Sergipe em junho de 2009. As informações foram coletadas por meio de questionários estruturados aplicados pessoalmente com os empreendedores. Os dados foram analisados por meio de estatística descritiva e os resultados foram comparados ao de outras pesquisas realizadas no Brasil relacionadas ao programa EI. Pode-se verificar que programa EI em Sergipe alcançou resultados expressivos, entre eles: a adesão ao programa permitiu o aumento nas vendas pelo acesso a novos mercados e ampliação da oferta dos seus produtos, além de permitir aos empreendedores a contratação de mão de obra no apoio às atividades do negócio. Destaca-se também a que a formalização do negócio também facilitou o acesso ao crédito para os empreendedores. Contudo, a participação dos EIs nas compras governamentais ainda é incipiente, pois ainda não reconhecem as vendas para o governo como um grande potencial de receitas.

Food micro-enterprises for food security in an urban slum community in East London : development of an awareness-creating programmeCress-Williams, Lise 12 1900 (has links)

Duncan Village of I) the potential role of food micro-enterprises in the improvement of food security; 2)
the consumer demand concerning the operations of food micro-enterprises; and 3) appropriate microenterprise
training programmes available in the greater East-London area. This was based on an
identified need for the inclusion of a module on food security in a comprehensive programme to prevent
growth failure in 0 to 24-month-old children attending local government clinics in Duncan Village by
improving the capacity of mothers or primary caregivers to care for their children.
Food security is defined as access by all people at all times to enough food for an active, healthy life.
The potential role of food micro-enterprises in the improvement of food security was established through
a literature review. It was established that street foods contribute to individual food security by
providing food where people work or congregate at cheap prices, thus increasing availability. It also
helps in meeting energy and nutritional needs if safe, nutritious food is provided. The main method by
which it increases an individual's access to food is by supplying an income to food micro-enterprise
owners if they sell street foods.
The consumer demand concerning the operations (including the products) of food micro-enterprises was
determined through personal interviews with the customers and non-customers of food micro-enterprises
in Duncan Village, using a structured questionnaire. One hundred and twenty-nine customers and 129
non-customers were selected using a combination of cluster and convenience sampling. Food microenterprises
operating at the schools and on pavements in Duncan Village and at the taxi rank in East
London were included. The results of this particular survey indicate that the consumer behaviour is
influenced by the trade area where the customers purchase their food, the age and gender of the
customers as well as the friendliness of the vendor. The product choice of consumers was mostly
determined by taste, price and how filling the food is. There was general satisfaction with the operating
times of, and the products sold by, food micro-enterprises. Street food consumers were least satisfied
with the locations where the enterprises were situated. The dusty environment was given as a reason for
dissatisfaction. Further, cleanliness of the food, the vendor and the environment were the main problems
cited, especially by the non-customers.
The appropriateness of micro-enterprise training programmes available in the greater East London area
for current and prospective food micro-enterprise owners in Duncan Village was determined by
compiling a profile of food micro-enterprises, their owners and their business operations in Duncan
Village; identifying the features of the ideal training programme for current and prospective food microenterprise
owners in Duncan Village; investigating the supply of micro-enterprise training in the greater
East London area; and evaluating the appropriateness of the identified training programmes. The profile of food micro-enterprises in Duncan Village owned by women, included a profile of the
owners, the enterprise itself as well as the business operations thereof. The data were gathered by means
ofa personal interview (using a structured questionnaire) with the owners of food micro-enterprises. The
enterprises included in the study were operated by women producing and trading processed foods from
non-permanent structures at schools and on pavements in Duncan Village, as well as at the taxi ranks in
East London. Systematic sampling techniques were used to select food micro-enterprises at the schools
while all the enterprises at the pavements and at the taxi rank were included. This resulted in the
inclusion of 41 food micro-enterprises. The results indicated that the profiles of these owners do not
differ significantly from micro-enterprise owners operating in the informal sector elsewhere in South
Africa. Furthermore, they indicated a clear need for training in all aspects regarding their business
operations.
The identification of the features of the ideal micro-enterprise training programme for the training of
current and prospective female food micro-enterprise owners operating in Duncan Village was based on
the profiles of street food consumers and food micro-enterprise owners, discussions with experts and on
the literature. The identified features were used for the development of a framework to evaluate the
appropriateness of micro-enterprise training in the greater East London area for current and prospective
food micro-enterprise owners in Duncan Village.
The supply of micro-enterprise training in the greater East London area for food micro-enterprise owners
was investigated using a structured questionnaire, completed during a personal interview with the
training managers of the organisations. All governmental and non-governmental organisations in the
area offering training programmes with the objective to motivate and enable persons to establish a microenterprise
in the informal sector; or with the objective to enable established micro-enterprises to operate
more efficiently within the informal sector, were included in the study population. These organisations
were identified through snowball sampling and resulted in ten organisations and 17 programmes being
included.
Subsequently, the appropriateness of micro-enterprise training programmes available in the greater East
London area for current and prospective food micro-enterprise owners in Duncan Village was evaluated
using the Evaluation Framework. The results indicate that only one programme, combining business
management and cooking skills, could be rated as appropriate for current and prospective food microenterprise
owners in Duncan Village. Five other programmes could be rated as moderately appropriate
for particular groups. These programmes, with the exception of one, included business management
skills and no cooking skills. The remaining programmes were rated as either not very appropriate or
inappropriate for current and prospective food micro-enterprise owners in Duncan Village.
It is concluded that a need for the mentioned awareness-creating programme exists. Furthermore, it is
recommended that the programme developed in this research, be used as basis for the household food
security module of the comprehensive programme. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die doel van die studie was die ontwikkeling van 'n program om die bewustheid van vroue in Duncan
Village ten opsigte van 1) die bydrae wat voedsel mikro-ondernemings tot die verbetering van voedsel
sekuriteit kan lewer; 2) verbruikers se behoeftes betreffende die bedrywighede van voedsel mikroondernemings;
en 3) toepaslike mikro-onderneming opleidingprogramme in die groter Oos Londen area
te verhoog. Die behoefte om 'n module oor voedselsekuriteit in 'n omvattende intervensie program in te
sluit, is reeds geïdentifiseer. Hierdie intervensie program het ten doeI om groeivertraging in 0 tot 24
maande oue kinders, wat munisipale klinieke in Duncan Village besoek, te voorkom deur die
versorgingkapasiteit van hul moeders of primêre versorgers te verhoog.

geëvalueer deur die volgende stappe uit te voer: 'n Profiel van voedsel mikro-ondernemings, met
inbegrip van die eienaars en die besigheidsaktiwiteite, is saamgestel. Die eienskappe van die ideale
opleidingprogram vir huidige en voornemende eienaars van voedsel mikro-ondernemings in Duncan

relevante literatuur. Die geïdentifiseerde eienskappe is gebruik vir die ontwikkeling van 'n raamwerk om
die toepaslikheid van mikro-onderneming opleidingprogramme in die groter Oos Londen area te
evalueer.
Die beskikbaarheid van mikro-onderneming opleiding programme in die groter Oos Londen omgewing,
vir voedsel mikro-onderneming eienaars, is met behulp van 'n gestruktureerde vraelys wat tydens 'n
persoonlike onderhoud met die opleidingbestuurders van die organisasies voltooi is, ondersoek. Alle
regerings- en nie-regerings organisasies in die omgewing wat opleidingprogramme met die doel om
persone te motiveer en in staat te stel om 'n voedsel mikro-onderneming in die informele sektor te vestig,
of om 'n gevestigde voedsel mikro-onderneming meer effektief te bedryf, aanbied, is in die studie
populasie ingesluit. Tien organisasies en 17 programme is deur middel van sneeubal steekproefneming
geïdentifiseer en ingesluit.
Die toepaslikheid van beskikbare mikro-onderneming opleidingprogramme in die groter Oos Londen
omgewing is deur middel van die Evaluering Raamwerk geëvalueer. Die resultate het aangedui dat slegs
een program wat ondernemingsbestuur- en voedsel voorbereidingsvaardighede gekombineer het, as
toepaslik vir huidige en voornemende voedsel mikro-onderneming eienaars beskou kon word. Vyf ander
programme kan as redelik toepaslik vir sekere groepe gesien word. Almal behalwe een van hierdie
programme het ondernemingsbestuurvaardighede ingesluit, maar geen voedsel
voorbereidingsvaardighede nie. Die oorblywende programme is as nie baie toepaslik of geensins
toepaslik vir huidige en voornemende eienaars van voedsel mikro-ondernemings in Duncan Village
geëvalueer.
Daar is tot die gevolgtrekking gekom dat daar 'n behoefte bestaan vir die bogenoemde
bewusmakingprogram. Daar word verder aanbeveel dat die program wat in hierdie navorsing ontwikkel
is, as 'n basis vir die huishoudelike voedselsekuriteit module in die omvattende intervensie program
gebruik word.

Assessment of waste management practices in the informal business sector in Olievenhoutbosch township, PretoriaDube, Innocent 02 1900 (has links)
The increase in global population and high urbanisation rates characterised by high
resource consumption and waste generation levels has led to challenges in waste
management around the world. Waste management remains one of the most critical
challenges faced by local governments in developing countries. Informal business
enterprises have come under the spotlight for their high waste production and poor waste
management practices. Many arguments have been put forward as to the real
environmental impacts caused by informal business enterprises due to their waste
practices.
This research aimed at assessing the waste management practices in the informal
business sector in Olievenhoutbosch Township, Pretoria. Data collection was carried out
between March 2016 and September 2016. The research utilised both qualitative and
quantitative methods. The methodology employed techniques that included structured
questionnaires, structured interviews and field observations. Semi- structured face to face
interviews were carried out with key informants. These interviews provided information
on the frequency of waste collection, available waste management awareness and
challenges faced in delivering the service. The research also involved 230 field
observations to study the pattern and frequency of waste collection and waste behaviours
by informal business enterprises. Questionnaires were administered to 120 informal
business enterprises with a response rate of 84.17%. Data from questionnaires and field
observations indicated that waste generated by informal business enterprises (plastic
bags, card board, packaging plastics, glass bottles and plastic bottles) was mainly
recyclable waste. The most preferred disposal methods were use of refuse plastic bags
(31%), open space dumping (20%) and burning (30%).
Analysis of the results showed that there was lack of information on waste management
and that also influenced waste behaviours. Preferences for waste disposal methods were
influenced by many factors including lack of information, shortage of waste disposal
facilities and waste collection frequency by the local town council. The research found
that waste collection in various sections of the township was done once per week which
has led to increased indiscriminate waste dumping and burning of waste. It was
recommended that waste management information be provided to informal business
enterprises especially on waste separation and recycling. The municipality should
increase frequency of waste collection or provide central point waste facilities to business
