Information Retrieval in Psychology

Hjørland, Birger January 1988 (has links)
lnformation retrieval is an important but generally neglected part of the research method in psychology. On the basis of a case study, which consists of an examination of the search strategy in a Swedish dissertation, the problems of searching are overviewed, with regard to both the selection of sources, and the construction of the secarch profile. Attention is givent to subject faceting in psychology.A model used by Psychological Abstracts in building on the concepts of experimental variables is replaced by a facet model developed on the basis of the Bliss Classification System. This model is illustrated using the above-mentioned dissertation as an example, and it is shown that the model can help in formulating search queries in psycholory. Also discussed are problems that concern the use of abstracts or full texts in the selection of documents. In addition, atteniion is given to the question of types of research in psychology that can or cannot benefit from computer-based retrievl methods.

Informatics in Clinical Practice in Developing Countries: Still Early Days

Arunachalam, Subbiah 11 1900 (has links)
Tamil Nadu will soon become the first state in India to provide telemedicine in the public sector when the local hospital in Thiruvallur is connected to the Chennai Medical College (about 40 km away) through an integrated services digital network (ISDN) line and linked terminals. Tamil Nadu cannot yet connect every district and taluk hospital to the nearest medical college because the ISDN facility is not available in many places outside Chennai. This reflects misplaced priorities in a country which has developed technologies for launching missiles and satellites and for producing nuclear bombs; provides cellular telephones, colour televisions, and luxury cars for the rich; and sends thousands of computer professionals to the United States every year. The story is the same everywhere in the developing world.

Information Science Practice in a Historical Perspective: Preliminary Findings of an Oral History Project

Pozzi, Ellen, Dalbello, Marija January 2005 (has links)
Related Work: Pozzi, Ellen, and Marija Dalbello. The New Jersey Chapter of the American Society for Information Science and Technology, 1975-2005: A Historical Note. New Brunswick, NJ: NJ-ASIS&T, 2006. 9 p. This brochure was distributed at the 30th anniversary celebration of NJ-ASIST and presents a historical overview and chronology of NJ-ASIST. In electronic format, it is accessible from dLIST as http://dlist.sir.arizona.edu/1630/. The history complements the findings of the research study presented here. / This research uses oral history approach to study an organizational field of information science. The interviews with members of the New Jersey chapter of the national information science organization (ASIST) provided insights into the transformation of this local chapter and information science work since 1975. Their views on the identity of the chapter and their own professional identity in that context, and on the development and maturation of information science field over the past thirty years are considered in the sociology of culture framework. Oral history as a phenomenological method of historical inquiry is here applied as an approach can open new directions for historical inquiry of information science in the national context, understanding the research / practice dynamics, and localization and institutionalization of information science field,

Analysis of Multiple Query Reformulations on the Web: The Interactive Information Retrieval Context

Rieh, Soo Young, Xie, Hong Iris January 2006 (has links)
This preprint has been published in Information Processing & Management 42 (2006): 751-768. This study examines multiple query reformulations on the Web in the context of interactive information retrieval. The results indicate that query reformulation is the product of user interaction with the IR system as well as the cognitive, affective, and situation levels from the user side.
