O desenvolvimento da pesquisa se deu a partir da produção plástica do autor, no intuito de refletir sobre o aspecto material na produção do trabalho de arte; tendo o sal como objeto de estudo, a partir do viés matérico na arte, ao mesmo tempo em que assume os sentidos físico, simbólico e formal, resultando em esculturas, instalações e residência artística, bem como também traduz um universo próprio do material , do seu ci clo de transformação diante das interferências do tempo e espaço, metaforizando- o através de aspectos cotidianos, culturais e sociais. / Abstract: This work presents the process of building artistic research developed from the material element salt. The research development occurred from the plastic production of the author in order to reflect on the material aspect in the production of art work; taking salt as an obje ct of study, from material view in art, while assuming the physical, symbolic and formal senses, resulting in sculptures, installations and artist residency and also reflects its own material universe, the processing cycle before the interference of time a nd space, metaphorising it through everyday, cultural and social aspects. / Mestre

The introduction establishes the goal of the research, which is to discover that art concerned with re-evaluating the relationship to the environment and spirituality can serve to connect people to one another, and to the environment. The context of the research is the contemporary ecological and spiritual crisis of the postmodern world. The background places the discussion within the contexts of modernism and postmodernism. The historical background focuses on the period from the 1960s to the present day. Land and Environmental artists who work in a manner that is conscious of environmental issues and who suggest a sacred and creative attitude to ecology are discussed. My own creative work which is a response to both ancient and contemporary sites as well as to contemporary theories of art and spirituality is discussed. The four projects, are discussed in chronological order, they are: Quest - A journey into Sacred Space; Gaika's Kop - Sacred Mountain; Labyrinth - Journeys to the Centre; and Transforming the Centre. The conclusion shows that the multi-faceted, intertextual and relativistic philosophy of postmodernism has brought about a significant change in the attitude of humanity towards the environment. Artists who reject the modernist aesthetic and philosophy are making art that emphasises relationship to, rather than separation from the natural world.

This thesis explores the application of digital technologies in the creation of visionary or transformative artwork. The installation emphasizes number, color, symmetry, and the human form to create symbolic compositions patterned after ancient archetypes. Background research was done to inform the work through studies of the principles of visionary and transformative artwork as practiced by Ernst Fuchs, De Es Schwertberger, and Alex Grey. Connections between art and spirituality as explained by Kandinsky were studied to augment these principles. The sequence of artwork within the installation is comprised of both digital paintings and interactive triptych panels. To convey a sense of the mystical or sacred, the Rothko Chapel was used to inform the installation and serve as an artistic precedent. As the interactive work is created using realistically-modeled, computer generated characters, special consideration was given to understanding the "uncanny valley" and its potential effect in the interpretation of the installation. Interactivity is achieved through the use of ultrasonic sensors and Arduino prototyping boards.

Tableau d'honneur de la Faculté des études supérieures et postdoctorales, 2006-2007 / Ce texte est l'accompagnement théorique de l'installation La porte de Verre, présentée au LANTISS à l'automne 2006. Sans prétention, j'y traite de la photographie par le biais de ma démarche sur l'habitat intime et le quotidien dans son rapport à l'homme. Explorant le passage entre l'ordinaire et la fiction, entre le dedans et le dehors; j'aborde l'image photographique comme une vision magnifiée du réel et comme un lieu potentiellement habitable.
