Internet-based monitoring and controlling of real-time dynamic systems

The study in this report mainly focuses on the Internet-based Monitoring and Controlling of a Real-Time Dynamic System interfaced via a dedicated local computer. The main philosophy behind this study is to allow the remote user to conduct an Internet-based Remote Operation (I-bRO) for the dynamic system. The dynamic system has been defined as the system which has its parts interrelated in such a way that a change in one part necessarily affects other parts of the system [I]. In order to achieve this goal, the study has been conducted in a form of an on-line and real-time Virtual Laboratory (VL). Through this form of laboratory, a user can carry out the experiment, perform real-time monitoring and controlling operations of the experiment and collect real and live data from the experiment through the network link as the user was physically in the laboratory. The dynamic system that has been selected for the test-rig of this study is a 3-phase Induction Motor (IM) which is mechanically coupled with a DC-Dynamometer that acts as a variable load to the IM. This system is a common laboratory experiment in the study of the Electrical Engineering for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. The study covers both sides of the I-bRO; the hardware and the software. The hardware side includes the design and the development of a load control box that has been used to interface the DC-Dynamometer and consequently control it from the local computer. The software side covers the design and the development of the Virtual Instrumentation System (VIS) that has replaced successfully the physical Measurement and Test (M&T) instruments of the test-rig. Beside that, the software side includes the development of the internet remote front panel for the remote operation. / Furthermore, the software side includes the development of the software that has been used to analyse the system during the I-bRO. In this study, the LabVTEW7 program has been used to design and develop the VIS and the Matlab program has bee used to aualyse the system performance for the remote operations. This study also addresses the issues and problems related to the intranet or the internet to be used as the network for data communication between the test-rig and remote users. This study has been carried out in different stages as follows: 1. Designing and development of the VIS. 2. Interfacing the test-rig apparatus with a local computer. 3. Upload the system from the local computer to the network. 4. Study the performance of the system on the network for the purpose of the remote operations controlled over the internet. The developed system of this study has been used for data acquisition, network communications, instruments monitoring and controlling applications. A user can execute on-line and in the real-time the developed VIS from any point in the university. Due to the fact that the university network is directly integrated to the main internet server. a remote user through the main internet server is able to perform I-bRO of the selected dynamic system. There are many factors associated with the network, the internet or the intranet, and have direct influences on the control system performance throughout the remote operations. The most dominant factors are the random time-delays and the data losses. / These factors among others have to be addressed for a proper application of the I-bRO. For this reason, different cases and scenarios of the I-bRO have been investigated and simulated to study the affection of the network on the control system performance. The system is analysed under two control cases, closed loop with random time-delays and open loop when the internet server is disconnected and no communication between the input and the output of the system. In the first case, the closed loop, the internet server is assumed to be closed and subjected to random time-delays. In the second case, the internet server is subjected to random cut-off and thus opens the control loop. The results of both cases have been analysed and discussed. It has been found that, if the control system without the time-delays is stable, it remains stable even with small time-delays up to twenty seconds. This result is different from what has been shown in the literature.

Instrumentação dos pedais de uma bicicleta de estrada como proposta para análise da força aplicada

Com o crescimento do ciclismo como opção para lazer, meio de transporte e, principalmente, esporte voltado à competição, estudos mais aprofundados fizeram-se necessários visando à maximização do desempenho de atletas de alto nível. De forma complementar, muitos são os desenvolvimentos na área de sistemas de instrumentação com o objetivo primordial de possibilitar a medição e a caracterização dos diversos parâmetros de interesse dos pesquisadores na área do ciclismo. Tendo em vista o surgimento de diversos sistemas comerciais que permitem realizar a medição de grandezas como força e potência mecânica gerada pelo ciclista, este trabalho propôs instrumentar e caracterizar as medições provenientes dos pedais e pedivelas de uma bicicleta de estrada com a finalidade de, posteriormente, compará-las com base em métodos estatísticos adequados. Em função das limitações mecânicas inerentes à bicicleta e presentes no movimento de rotação nos pedais e pedivelas, foram criados sistemas completamente independentes, com alimentações elétricas feitas por baterias, e a sincronização para o início das aquisições, através de módulos ZigBee. Os ensaios contaram com a participação de dez voluntários, os quais foram responsáveis por gerar vinte sprints de dados, cada, que serviram para avaliar estatisticamente e concluir, por meio de Análises de Variância, que as forças aplicadas pelos ciclistas se diferenciaram significativamente para pelo menos uma das células de carga. / Cycling has grown as a leisure activity, means of transport and mainly as a professional sport. Therefore, deeper studies and research aiming at maximizing the performance of high-level athletes have been made necessary. Additionally to such studies, the area of instrumentation schemes has developed seeking to make possible the measuring and characterization of several parameters for researchers interested in cycling. Regarding the vibrant surging of systems that allow the measuring of magnitudes such as the forces and mechanical power generated by the cyclist, the present research aims at implementing and characterizing the measuring deriving from pedals and crankset for a road bicycle so as to analyze the results with appropriate statistic methods. Considering the mechanical limitations inherent to the bicycle the movement of pedals and crankset independent electrical systems charged by batteries were created, as well as the synchronization for the beginning of data acquisitions through ZigBee modules. Ten volunteers participated on the practices. They generated twenty sprints of data each. Such data served to statistically evaluate and conclude, based on variance analysis, that the power applied by the cyclists are significantly different for one of the load cell.

Caractérisation et modélisation des joints de colles sous sollicitations bi-axiales statiques / Characterization and modeling of adhesive bonded joints under quasi-static loadings

Le collage structural se présente comme une alternative intéressante aux méthodes classiques d'assemblages par ajout d’éléments mécaniques pour alléger les structures aéronautiques. Cependant, l'utilisation de cette méthode soulève de nombreuses questions en termes de conception, caractérisation ou modélisation. Ce travail, à fort caractère expérimental, visent deux grands objectifs : (i) sélectionner les moyens d'instrumentation les plus adaptés pour la caractérisation du comportement jusqu'à rupture des assemblages collés et (ii) prédire le comportement des assemblages collés à partir d'une caractérisation et d'une modélisation complète sous chargements quasi-statiques bi-axiaux, en utilisant un type d’essai simple et industrialisable. Dans un premier temps, pour atteindre ces objectifs, un nouvel essai appelé Scarf modifié a été proposé, afin de caractériser le comportement mécanique du joint de colle, en minimisant les effets de bord par la présence de becs. La deuxième partie de la thèse porte sur le développement d'une stratégie de caractérisation simplifiée du comportement de joint de colle, sous certaines hypothèses (états de contraintes/déformations, continuité du champ de contraintes). Cette stratégie a permis d'obtenir le comportement intrinsèque de l’adhésif sous la forme de courbes contraintes/déformations. La dernière partie abordée dans ces travaux, s'intéresse quant à elle à l'identification et la sélection des moyens de métrologie les plus appropriés, pour accompagner la caractérisation expérimentale. / Today, structural bonding presents an interesting alternative to conventional methods of assembly, in order to reduce the weight within aeronautical structures. However, the use of this method raises many questions in terms of design, characterization or modeling. This work presents a robust experimental work, aiming two main objectives: (i) select the most suitable instrumentation for the characterization of the behavior of bonded joints up to failure and (ii) predict the behavior of bonded joints from complete characterization and modeling under quasi-static bi-axial loading, using a simple test, directly integrated to industry. In a first stage, to achieve this goal, modified Scarf test has been proposed to characterize the mechanical behavior of adhesive joints. This type of specimen allows applying multiaxial loadings without having high-stress concentrations near the edges. The second part of the thesis deals with the development of a strategy for simplifying the characterization of a bonded joint using some hypotheses (stress/strain states). This strategy allows obtaining the intrinsic behavior of the adhesive in the form of the stress/strain curves. The last part of this work deals with the identification and selection of the most appropriate instrumentation systems in the experimental characterization.
