The role of literati in military action during the Ming-Qing transition period /

Zhang, Yimin, 1961 Oct. 19- January 2006 (has links)
This dissertation explores the interaction between literati and various social forces in east China in the mid-seventeenth century by focusing on their military performance. Based on a wide range of sources, the study focuses on about twenty literati, most of whom have never been previously researched from a military history perspective. It examines the diversity and complexity of Chinese literati as they pursued power over and within local society, paying special attention to the interrelation between them (literati and society). It argues that Chinese literati in this time period had much less aptitude in changing China than has been previously thought. Both individual and group case studies show that they mainly focused on the realization of an ideal goal, but were unwilling or ill-equipped to adapt themselves to changing conditions as well as environments. This study also indicates that the local military forces as well as ordinary peasants generally played a more crucial role than the literati; the latter's superior position could only be realized in times of peace. That civil and military officials affected each other in fact is an expression of a larger relationship between the central government and its own military forces or with certain local forces. Finally, this study concludes that Chinese literati as a whole had no idea how to integrate and lead the other social forces to reach an ideal goal in that specific time period.

In 1923 Qu Qiu-bai returned from Soviet Russia to China and gradually aligned himself with the power nucleus of Chinese Communist Party as an important political theorist within the Party. Much of the polyphonic elements exemplary in Qu's thoughts, as seen in his earlier writings, had given way noticeably. As purported by mainstream academic queries, Qu's metamorphosis into a Bolshevik had often been accounted for his nevertheless brief stay at the Soviet Russia. The present study, however, confers a dissimilar view in attempting to locate the polyphonic registers in Qu's thoughts. It is found that Qu's thoughts had been characterized by a strong sense of polyphonic nature throughout, whether in his earlier or later works. / In resembling the overlooked complexity of Qu's thoughts, Chapter 3 goes on to inquire how Qu's construction of subjectivity is determined by his specific perspective of history---one which comprised of a synthesis of Creative Evolutionism and Dialectic Materialism. Such construction of subjectivity is important in understanding Qu's contested presence and agency in revolutionary political situations of the early 20th century. Chapter 3.1, thereafter, locates the relevance of Qu's construction of subjectivity to his notion of "orphan pushed away from track" in a re-reading of his widely acknowledged essay "Preface to Lu Xun's Collected Essays." This reading is coupled with a discussion of Qu's "Travel Notes on New Russia" through which Qu's specifications of "suicide" and spatial imagery of the heterotopias will be expounded. Working upon research outcome of this coupled query, a close reading of Qu's confessional note "Superfluous Words" will serves to elucidate Qu's proposition of a negated subjectivity. Chapter 3.4 gives a comparative analysis of the later political lives of Qu and Nikolai Bukharin. It attempts to establish that the outright negation of subjectivity is an implicit tendency in historical materialism. Lastly, Chapter 4 attempts to illustrate Qu's revolutionary subjectivity and his specific notion of pendulum time in recourse to the tropes of pendulum movements: "Revolution/Work," and "Love/Freedom." / The study begins with a topic of research that mainstream academic queries left mostly unanswered: namely, Qu's appropriations of Bergonism, the Yogacara School and Anarchism exemplary in his early writings. This line of query delineates how the 3 major traditions of thoughts compositely engaged Qu in his approach of Bolshevik political practices and Dialectic Materialism. On the basis of this, the study further examines the trajectory how Qu observed in his endorsement of Dialectic Materialism over Bergon's Creative Evolutionism (L'evolution Cretienne). The study also finds that such a pendulum movement from Philosophy of Life towards Dialectic Materialism largely concurred the thoughts and discourses of Italian Marxist Antonio Gramsci, a contemporary of Qu. Following this, the study compares the two men's notions and problematic of "the Intellectuals". A comparative analysis of Qu's theorization of the "Historical Tool" and Gramsci's "The Modern Prince" is offered at this part of study. / Adviser: Lee Ou-Fan; Wang Wai Ching. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 69-08, Section: A, page: 3146. / Thesis (doctoral)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2007. / Includes bibliographical references (p. 243-256). / Electronic reproduction. / The author intends to discuss the reception of Tao Yuanming in the Early Qing Dynasty from the aspects such as the emotions of poets, the changes of poetics, the intentions of poetries, the poetic imageries and the differences of the editions. And, it is the first work focusing solely on the reception of Tao Yuanming in the Early Qing Dynasty. Regarding the research methods, this dissertation not only studies the critiques through the existed methods, but also analyses the existed materials in a different manner. By comparing the literary allusions of Tao Yuanming’s life of 40 scholars lived in Early Qing who had different social background, the thesis discusses how these people constructed the images of Tao Yuanming and how they selected from Tao’s qualities. The thesis also tries to sort out the different attitudes of Tao among scholars of Early Qing and its changes with regard to the historical context. / Based on the research, the author finds out that the existed understanding of the reception of Tao Yuanming in the Early Qing, which focuses on the leftover citizen’s aspect, and which portrays Tao image as a rebellion was largely incomplete. Apart from the vigorous discussions regarding the images of Tao among the leftover citizen, the non-leftover citizen also discussed Tao with great enthusiasm. Under this circumstance, a new form of He Tao Shi(和陶詩) “poems written to match Tao’s , was found in opposite mode in order to response to those leftover citizen. / By appropriation of Tao’s images in their communication and responding each other especially in poems, scholars lived in Early Qing expressed their uneasiness and pain as in the change of the regime through reading, commentary and writing of Tao’s collections. Thus, this special kind of poem allowed the Early Qing scholars to escape from the distress of the reality to an ideal world, a typical example of which was “Peach-Blossom Spring created by Tao Yuanming. This tendency reflected in the editions of Tao’s works in Early Qing Dynasty that Tao’s poems received much attention while other forms of works were not included in the collections of works. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2013. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 331-376) / Abstracts in Chinese and English. / Abstracts in English and Chinese. / Liang Shufeng.
