A área
basal encontrada foi de 9,977 m2.ha"1 , o volume médio estimado foi 29,29 m3.ha"1;
caatinga. / In the semiarid region of northeastern Brazil , the exploitation of timber forest
products in the Caatinga has been wrongly held by those who live there , which is
used primarily geared to the extraction of firewood , charcoal production , stakes ,
posts and forage. To try to minimize these damages caused to this vegetation, the
practice of sustainable forest management should be used. This study aimed to
develop activities related to the analysis of the floristic composition and
phytosociological method using selective cutting BDq in an area with caatiga
vegetation. This study was conducted in Laranjeiras Farm, São José de Espinharas -
Paraíba. We conducted a forest inventory using systematic sampling, in which 40
sampling units of fixed area of 400 m2 were measured. In these units, we measured
all live and still standing dead individuals by measuring the circumference at the base
, 0.30 m above the ground ( CNB0 30 ) and total height, having a s minimum level of
inclusion individuals that presented C A P > 6 cm and height £ 1.30 m. We simulated
three alternative management method based on BDq : reduction of 40 %, 50% and
60% of the basal area. 1,746 individuals belonging to 10 families, 20 genera and 20
species were sampled. The most representative families in number of species were
Fabaceae-mimosoideae , Fabaceae-caesalpinioideae and Euphorbiaceae. T h e high
mortality of trees in the area was due to the long period of drought that affected the
Northeast during the data collection. The basal area was found to be 9,977 m2 ha"1,
the mean estimated volume was 29.29 m3.ha~1 ; the pre - established values of the
remaining basal area, maximum diameter and constant "q", simulated cutting of trees
in all diameter classes in all treatments, except those who had a deficit in the number
of trees with greater intensity in the smaller diameter classes. An economic
evaluation is required to recommend the use of the method for BDq caatinga biome.

Individual differences in response to brief psychological interventions : using a mixed methods design to identify the role of user characteristics in the treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)Knopp, Jasmin January 2017 (has links)
Background: OCD is a debilitating mental health condition. Poor access to evidence-based psychological treatment has motivated the implementation of low intensity interventions in UK mental health services for OCD. Around one half of those accessing care remain clinically unwell. Service users, providers, and treatment decision-makers could benefit from understanding users' views of low intensity interventions and knowing which users are more likely to benefit from diverse low intensity approaches in order to match individuals with treatments of known efficacy. Aim and objectives: The primary aim of this research was to determine user characteristics associated with engagement and outcome in low intensity interventions for OCD. The objectives of the study were: 1) to review the published literature on predictors of psychological therapy outcome in OCD, 2) to explore individual variation in intervention acceptability, uptake, and engagement, and 3) to identify user characteristics, which moderate intervention engagement and outcome. Methods: This mixed methods thesis was conducted in three parts. Firstly, a systematic review of published trial data was conducted to identify predictors of therapy outcome. Secondly, primary data were collected as part of a large effectiveness trial: 1) qualitative interviews with 36 trial participants, randomised to one of two low intensity interventions (guided self-help; cCBT); and 2) quantitative trial assessments conducted at baseline and at 3-months follow-up. Data from the systematic review and the qualitative study were used to identify possible moderators of outcome. Confirmatory analyses were then conducted on these variables, using data from the quantitative assessments. Results: Objective 1: The systematic review identified 43 studies, examining predictors of outcome. Robust effects were rare and the applied utility of these findings is limited by methodological weaknesses. Objective 2: Six themes were identified from the qualitative study, three relate to the general acceptability of low intensity interventions: 1) Predisposing concepts of high quality psychological therapies, 2) Engaging with low intensity interventions, and 3) The perceived value of therapist support. Three are specific to individuals with OCD: 4) Positive aspects of OCD, 5) Recognition and accommodation of OCD users' needs, and 6) OCD disclosure. Objective 3: User attachment style, expressed emotion, OCD symptom subtype, and prior help seeking for OCD were examined in confirmatory interaction tests. Symmetry/order/exactness symptoms were associated with a greater likelihood of engagement in guided self-help than cCBT. Contamination/washing symptoms were associated with improved outcome in guided self-help over cCBT. Conclusions: This study has made an original contribution through using a mixed methods design to identify individual differences in response to low intensity interventions in OCD. There is significant individual variation in the acceptability of, and engagement with, low-intensity interventions for OCD, linked to the mode and intensity of therapist support preferable to the individual user. However, few moderators could be identified. Future research should focus on maximising the reliability of stratified medicine research to allow related findings to inform clinical decision-making.

Communication, Goals and Collaboration in Buyer-Supplier Joint Product DesignJanuary 2011 (has links)
abstract: Original equipment manufacturers (buyers) are increasingly involving suppliers in new product development as a means to increase efficiency and expand capabilities. To realize such benefits, however, the two firms need to have appropriate communication and goal structures to minimize friction while maximizing design quality. In addition, the effectiveness of the inter-firm interaction process, i.e. their collaboration quality, is also a key success factor. This study draws from Information Process Theory to propose that higher technical and relational uncertainty requires more inter-firm communication. The misalignment between communication intensity and uncertainty reduces both design quality and design efficiency. Goal incongruence, which always lowers project performance, is less harmful for projects with high technical uncertainty due to the potential of the conflict resolving process in improving decision quality and efficiency. Finally I use Hackman's theory of work group effectiveness to propose that collaboration quality fully mediates the effects of communication intensity and goal congruence on project outcomes. The study used an empirical survey of manufacturers as the primary method of data collection. Manufacturers that integrate and assemble complex and discrete products are the target population. Design engineers and project managers from manufacturers were my target respondents. Both SEM and hierarchical regression were used to test the conceptual model. The dissertation made five theoretical contributions. First, I introduced the concept that there is an optimal level of inter-firm communication intensity, exceeding which lowers design efficiency without improving design quality. Second, I theoretically defined and empirically operationalized two types of uncertainty, one on the project level and one on the inter-firm level, which were shown to moderate the effects of inter-firm communication and goal structures on collaboration outcomes. Third, this study examined the conditions when goal congruence is more effective in improving collaboration outcomes. Fourth, this study nominally and operationally defined collaboration quality, a theoretical construct which measure the effectiveness of inter-partner interactions rather than mere existence or amount of certain activities pursued by partners. Finally, I proposed several enhancements to existing construct measures. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Business Administration 2011

Mergers and Acquisitions with a Flexible Policy Regime: Theoretical and Empirical AnalysisFikru, Mahelet Getachew 01 May 2011 (has links)
The research examines what drives Mergers and Acquisitions (M&As) using a theoretical and empirical approach. The theoretical part uses flexible optimal policies which adjust to changes in the market structure following a merger. The empirical part tests the major theoretical predictions to identify determinants of M&As in advanced economies. Chapters 1 and 2 consider M&As among firms in a pollution-intensive sector. Chapter 1 shows that identical polluting firms engage in M&As only if environmental policies are flexible. Chapter 2 shows that the flexibility of environmental policy increases the incentive to merge among heterogeneous firms. In addition, with flexible policy highly polluting firms have the highest incentive to merge than less polluting firms in a given sector. The empirical evidence suggests that the decision of manufacturing firms to engage in M&As is affected by environmental policy and firms may engage in merger deals in anticipation of a change in policy. Chapter 3 shows that with a flexible consumption tax firms in a bigger, more efficient country takeover firms in a smaller, less efficient country. The incentive to merge increases with the efficiency and market size of the host country. The empirical result obtained from 7 OECD countries shows that market size and firm efficiency play a major role in triggering international mergers.

A modeling-based assessment of acousto-optic sensing for monitoring high-intensity focused ultrasound lesion formationAdams, Matthew Tyler 12 March 2016 (has links)
Real-time acousto-optic (AO) sensing - a dual-wave modality that combines ultrasound with diffuse light to probe the optical properties of turbid media - has been demonstrated to non-invasively detect changes in ex vivo tissue optical properties during high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) exposure. The AO signal indicates the onset of lesion formation and predicts resulting lesion volumes. Although proof-of-concept experiments have been successful, many of the underlying parameters and mechanisms affecting thermally induced optical property changes and the AO detectability of HIFU lesion formation are not well understood. In thesis, a numerical simulation was developed to model the AO sensing process and capture the relevant acoustic, thermal, and optical transport processes.
The simulation required data that described how optical properties changed with heating. Experiments were carried out where excised chicken breast was exposed to thermal bath heating and changes in the optical absorption and scattering spectra (500 nm - 1100 nm) were measured using a scanning spectrophotometer and an integrating sphere assembly. Results showed that the standard thermal dose model currently used for guiding HIFU treatments needs to be adjusted to describe thermally induced optical property changes.
To model the entire AO process, coupled models were used for ultrasound propagation, tissue heating, and diffusive light transport. The angular spectrum method was used to model the acoustic field from the HIFU source. Spatial-temporal temperature elevations induced by the absorption of ultrasound were modeled using a finite-difference time-domain solution to the Pennes bioheat equation. The thermal dose model was then used to determine optical properties based on the temperature history. The diffuse optical field in the tissue was then calculated using a GPU-accelerated Monte Carlo algorithm, which accounted for light-sound interactions and AO signal detection. The simulation was used to determine the optimal design for an AO guided HIFU system by evaluating the robustness of the systems signal to changes in tissue thickness, lesion optical contrast, and lesion location. It was determined that AO sensing is a clinically viable technique for guiding the ablation of large volumes and that real-time sensing may be feasible in the breast and prostate.

Soccer is a sport with high intensity actions, involving an increase in tissue damage, which can be measured by the analysis of biochemical markers such as creatine kinase (CK), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and myoglobin (Mb). The physical tests most used to determine the physical fitness of the players are: Yo-yo intermittent aerobic test, 10 and 30 meters speed, repeated anaerobic races (RSA, 6 x 20-20 m) and vertical squat and counter-movement (IVSQUATand IVCMV). However, therelationship between the level of physical fitness of the player, his wear during the match with the intensity in which he plays and the technical actionsis little studied. Therefore, the present study has as objective: to verify if the players that present better performance in the physical tests also have higherparticipation with the ball and play in higherintensity; to verifywhich indicators of muscle damage in matches relate to physical fitness, technical actions and intensity of the soccermatch; as well as,toverifythe relationship amongCK, LDH and Mb with the intensity of the match. The present study had 11 soccer players from a team participating in the First Division Paulista Championship. The players underwent anthropometric evaluation and assessment of physical abilities (Yo-yo, RSA, 10 and 30 meters and IV). The HFof the game was monitored during two official matches to determine the loading of the game by the training impulse (TRIMP). Two hours before and after the game blood samples (5 mL) were collected for MB (pre-game and 30 min) and CK and LDH (pre-game and 24 h) dosages. The matches were filmed to determine the technical actions of the players. The determine the technical actions of the players. The normality of the data was verified with the Shapiro-Wilk test. In order to determine if there was pre and post-match difference between CK, LDH and Mb, Student-t-test was performed. The relationship between physical fitness tests and technical actions, markers of tissue damage and HR of the game was made through Pearson's correlation. The level of significance was set at p≤0.05. LDH was significantly correlated with 10-m, whereas Mb presented correlation with RSAdecai, IVCMV, 10-m and 30-m. TRIMP of the game presented correlation with lost ball, right and wrong finalization, Yo-yo and RSAbetter. The number of disarrangescorrelated with the Yo-yo, RSAbetter, 30-m, IVSQUATand IVCMV, and the correct passes correlated with IVSQUAT and the contacts with the ball with RSAbetter, IVSQUATand IVCMV. Mb presented greater sensitivity with the physical fitness of the players compared to CK and LDH. TRIMP of the game has no relation with the markers of tissue damage and, finally, the players with greater physical aptitude present better technical performances.
