Transient displacement analysis using double-pulsed ESPI and fringe processing methods

Davila Alvarez, Abundio January 1996 (has links)
This thesis deals with techniques for the displacement measurement of fast transient phenomena using ESPI. Four main contributions are presented. First, a computer model for speckle noise and ESPI fringe generation is proposed. An assessment methodology for speckle noise reduction algorithms is then derived using the computer model. Then the noise in the ESPI fringe patterns is analysed using computer generated speckle and several solutions for its reduction are proposed and assessed. Finally, a fast electro-optical system is presented as a solution to the unambiguous phase extraction problem from a single interferogram. With this novel system, whole field transient displacements occurring in time intervals as short as 20ns can be successfully registered and retrieved.

Optical interferometers with single outputs are very sensitive when operating close to the phase quadrature point of their input-output characteristic curves. However, low frequency environmental fluctuations generate random drifts between the optical paths of the interferometer that deviate the quiescent point from the quadrature condition. This problem causes the phenomenon called signal fading. By electronically processing these two interferometry output signals, shifted by 90º, it is possible to demodulate the signal regardless of environmental drift. These kinds of interferometers, known as quadrature interferometers, are widely used in metrology laboratories, but, due to the large amount of optical components, they are expensive and difficult to design. In this work a low cost homodyne interferometer with two output quadrature beams based on the Michelson configuration is studied, and the procedure to achieve the quadrature signals is mathematically described. Also, a recent technique, not widely known in the literature and that is able to obtain two quadrature signals by using the standard configuration of the Michelson interferometer is explored, exploiting the spatial distribution of the fringe pattern. A new method for optical phase shift demodulation based on phase unwrapping is developed. This approach is able to recover not only the modulation signal waveform, but can also calculate the static phase shift between the interferometer arms when the modulation signal has an average value equal to zero. The method also has the ability to demodulate signals which vary arbitrarily in time. Computational test were done aiming to demonstrate the technique potential. By using this new optical phase shift demodulation method, combined with the proposed interferometer and exploiting the spatial distribution of the fringe pattern, a piezoelectric flextensional actuator is characterized.

Reference interferometry techniques for nanodetection and biosensing

Herchak, Steven 22 August 2012 (has links)
Three reference interferometry techniques which overcome the effects of laser jitter noise in sensitive nanodetection experiments are presented. Experiments performed with a Mach-Zehnder interferometer in parallel with an ultrahigh-Q microresonator for nanodetection of a record polystyrene particle size down to 12.5 nm radius are described. The first interferometry technique employed in this work sees the implementation of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer in parallel with a microsphere to show the versatility of these devices across detection systems. Using a least squares fitting method on simulated results, it is shown that the parallel Mach-Zehnder can detect resonant wavelength shifts of the microcavity down to hundreds of attometers, provided sufficient system stability. Furthermore, a cavity resonant wavelength shift detection sensitivity of 0.14 femtometers is observed experimentally with a loaded microsphere Q of 2.0x10^8 in a buffer solution. For experiments which require high optical intensities, splitting off part of the optical power for use in an interferometer may reduce the dynamic range of power sensitive measurements. To rectify this problem, two in-line systems are investigated: the serial connected Mach-Zehnder and Fabry-Perot interferometers. According to simulation, the use of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer is not suitable for serial interferometry. In light of this problem, a serial Fabry-Perot interferometer is proposed. It is shown that with a least squares fitting method to fit experimental data the inline Fabry-Perot interferometer can measure resonant wavelength shifts down to a few femtometers, again provided sufficient system stability. Experimental results show a cavity resonant wavelength shift detection sensitivity of 0.5 femtometers observed with a microsphere Q of 2.1x10^7 in a buffer solution. / Graduate
