Managing a fitting and turning learnership at an FET institution in the Western Cape

Thesis (MTech (Education))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2007 / In 1998 the Department of Labour launched a skills revolution in the South African workplace. The Skills Development Act of 1998 introduced the 'Learnership' model of workplace training, which has been promoted as a creative vehicle for addressing high unemployment rates and a serious skills shortage. The Act proposed a very ambitious new framework through the creation of a new institutional regime with strong links forged between learners, employers, govemment and the new intermediary training bodies, SETAs. This new institutional mechanism for delivering training was termed 'Learnerships'. This dissertation explores the perceptions of the staff of two FET colleges around the Fitting and Turning learnership in which they are involved, with a particular focus on their roles and responsibilities in managing the Fitting and Turning learnership. Their perceptions were ascertained through a structured interview process. A framework of understanding was established by examining the stakeholders' roles and responsibilities; learnership accreditation e.g., SETA training policies, physical and human resources, bUdget and finance; structured learning and assessment e.g. logbooks, continuous assessment and work relevant training, partnerships with industry and other skills programmes; the learner monitoring process e.g. administration system, quality management, learner support, recruitment and selection, throughput rate and communication; and limitations and recommendations to improve the management of learnerships.

Professional development among counselling psychology interns : exploring critical incidents

The journey towards becoming a counselling psychologist, in South Africa, includes the completion a 12 month internship. The internship year holds many challenges and demands for novice professionals and aims to assist them in making the transition from student to professional. This study aims to explore the subjective experiences of intern counselling psychologists and the critical incidents which assist them in making this transition. In addition, it aims to identify experiences impacting on the interns’ professional development and professional identity. Three registered counselling psychologists, who completed their internship at a South African university counselling centre within the last year, were recruited and participated in individual interviews. These interviews were semi-structured and followed the Critical Incident Technique method. Each interview was voice recorded and transcribed. The data collected was analysed using thematic content analysis. As the research design is qualitative, using a phenomenological approach, the focus is on presenting information-rich and detailed descriptions of participants “lived” experiences of their internship year. It attempts to understand significant incidents or events which influenced the participants’ professional and personal development as they navigate through this ambiguous period to become independent and ethical practitioners. Four predominant themes emerged from the data collected, which include a discussion pertaining to professional boundaries and limitations, learning within the internship environment, the effects of professional and personal support and, lastly, the transition from dependent to independent professional functioning.

Changing the assumptions of a training therapist : an auto-ethnographic study

This auto-ethnographic study (i.e. an autobiographical genre of writing and research, written in the first-person voice, where the workings of self are expressed both cognitively and emotionally) qualitatively explores the changing assumptions of a training therapist. It shows how various therapies were negotiated during the training period, and explores how meaning was constructed according to basic, underlying epistemological assumptions. Significant experiences and therapies are presented, showing how the therapist's most basic, linear assumptions, were directly challenged by eco-systemic training. The study produces an in-depth, thick description of both the emotional and the cognitive journey of a training therapist, and traces the therapist's movement away from the stability and certainty of a linear epistemological 'way of knowing' to the instability and uncertainty characteristic of an eco-systemic 'way of knowing'. The purpose of this study was to analyse the effectiveness of Statistics South Africa's internship programme in developing the statistical skills of interns. A mixed method approach which included semi-structured interviews, document study and electronic questionnaires was used to gain insight into the thoughts and perceptions of 38 participants. The study revealed that many of the crucial elements for a successful internship programme are present in the current internship programme. It was also found that the interns do not get the opportunity to implement or utilize their skills in the areas in which they are being placed. The absorption and retention strategy also seems to pose a challenge for the internship programme of which the goal is to retain as many statisticians as possible. Finally, a proper absorption strategy, better and more formal assessments, and a higher salary level for interns being absorbed into the organization should also be considered / Language Education, Art and Culture / M. A framework to integrate the formal learning with the informal workplace learning of statisticians in a developmental state

The topic of integrating the formal learning of graduates with their informal workplace learning has been debated for many years. In practice, however, these two types of learning still exist as two polar opposites, especially in the field of statistics. This study examined the effectiveness of an internship programme as a means to integrate the formal learning of statisticians with their informal workplace learning. Based on the findings, a framework was proposed to ensure integration between the formal and informal workplace learning of statisticians. The study employed a mixed-method approach that combined quantitative and qualitative data collection. Quantitative data were collected from respondents (statisticians who participated in the internship programme and were permanently employed at the time of the study) through an online survey, and qualitative data were collected from managers (who served as mentors to the interns) through conducting semi-structured, one-on-one interviews. Documents pertaining to the internship programme in place at Statistics South Africa were also studied. Many developing countries still lack the capacity to produce, analyse and use the range of quality statistics required to support effective development progress. This study suggested a new way of integrating the formal learning with the informal workplace learning of statisticians, which involved adding a practical component (an internship) to the formal learning of statisticians, therefore, combining an internship during formal learning with an internship upon the completion of formal learning. In this way, statisticians are better capacitated because they can apply their formally obtained knowledge and skills in practice both while being engaged in their formal studies as well as after completing their studies, ensuring integration between formal and informal workplace learning. Crucial factors that would play a role in ensuring success are, for instance, if intern statisticians are placed in areas that are commensurate with their formal learning (thus ensuring utilisation of their skills) and if the level of the tasks assigned to them matches their cognitive ability. Support for interns’ informal learning in the form of mentorship, developmental assignments and training and development opportunities are also crucial to ensure integration between their formal learning and informal workplace learning. / Educational Leadership and Management / D. Psychotherapist development of trainee and qualified psychologists within the South African context : a qualitative study

This qualitative study aimed to trace the psychotherapeutic development of clinical and counselling psychologists across the careerspan within the South African context. Through purposive sampling 34 psychologists were recruited according to the inclusion criteria of the study. Five distinct career levels were explored, namely, student (n=10), intern (n=7), early career (n=7), experienced (n=5), and senior (n=5) psychologists in relation to the Society of Psychotherapy Research’s international model of psychotherapist development. By means of semi-structured interviews, couched in the social constructionist position, participants’ experiences were thematically analysed from over 600 pages of transcription. Additionally, the researcher’s personal journey of developing as a psychotherapist was reflected upon. The current study found that a number of aspects fostered the development of psychotherapists. Participants reflected on personal and familial wounding events that influenced them choosing a career as a psychologist; this awareness was gradual over their development. Across theoretical orientations, participants resisted adhering to one way of working in light of the diverse South African context. However, the need to limit the number of theoretical orientations taught within the first months of training was proposed. Professional sources of influence highlighted by participants were personal therapy and peer supervision or reading groups. Qualified professionals to a lesser extent made use of individual supervision which when pursued needed to be a ‘felt’ collaboration. Participants found as they developed they became more comfortable being a psychotherapist however the complexity of cases still kept them humble. Limitations of the study, potential future research directions as well as recommendations for practicing clinical and counselling psychology were outlined. / Psychology / Ph. D. (Psychology)

Due to an increase in the number of students enrolled for the Masters degree in Educational Psychology in the years from 2001, there was concern about the students experience of family therapy, since they would not all be likely to counsel a family. The study, which was undertaken over a period of two years, allows a comparison of two different experiences of being part of a reflecting team. The first year the whole group formed a single team, whereas, the group in the second year split into two teams, working on a fortnightly basis.
