A phenomenological investigation of the experience of being a male counsellor relative to issues of sex and gender-roles

Morgan, Charles P. 11 1900 (has links)
An individual's sex and associated gender-role expectations exert a primary influence on one's sense of self and nearly all the individual's interpersonal relationships. The purpose of this research project is to investigate how male counsellors experience the phenomenon of being a man, relative to issues associated with his sex and gender-role expectations, in the field of counselling. Because the emphasis is on the experience of sex and gender-role issues for male counsellors a phenomenological research method was chosen. Seven male counsellors were interviewed. The investigator conducted two interviews with each counsellor. The initial interview was designed to elicit the person's experiences of the phenomenon of being a male counsellor. After a preliminary analysis of this interview, a summary was prepared and shared with the respondent during the follow up interview. The purpose of this meeting was to verify the interpretation of the previous interview and to offer the individual an opportunity to supplement or modify his remarks. The interviews were transcribed by the investigator and analyzed using a method described by Karlsson (1993). The analysis of the data yielded three general categories of experience. They were experiences related to gender-role stereotyping, the experience of erotic feelings and the experience of being a man in a field in which they are a minority. A fourth category, which described the experience of the interviews, was included to further illuminate the results. for counsellor training, consultation The findings are discussed in light of previous research and include suggestions and further research. / Education, Faculty of / Educational and Counselling Psychology, and Special Education (ECPS), Department of / Graduate

Users Perceptions on Computer Intrusion

Mohajer Soltani, Aria January 2016 (has links)
This thesis is built on the hypothesis that the average computer user has very little understanding regarding computer intrusion. Due to the prevalence of computers in our day and age, the prospect of users lacking even basic knowledge regarding something a user is at risk of encountering almost daily is worrying. This thesis presents the discrepancies between how computer intrusion occurs and how the average user believes computer intrusion occurs. It does this by conducting a series of qualitative interviews with interviewees having wide ranges of experience and knowledge regarding computer intrusion, quantifying their answers, and comparing the data to existing statistics on the topic. This thesis found that the average user does indeed understand very little about computer intrusion. When asked how they believe it occurs, they in general either gave very vague answers and were unable to elaborate, or gave answers that correspond to a movie or TV show stereotype of computer hacking, with nerdy hackers rapidly tapping on their keyboards causing their computer screens to flash with bright colors and fancy graphics. Furthermore, this thesis also found that even in users who had extensive experience working within IT or with computing, a clear lack of knowledge in many areas could be observed. Additionally, this thesis also managed to reach some additional interesting conclusions based on the data gathered that were not originally the goal of the survey, such as the fact that many users seem to be far more susceptible to phising on social media as compared to email, and that users completely misunderstand the motives of people who perform computer intrusion.

Admission Criteria: A Focus on Using the Interview

Jones, Vanessa 01 December 2019 (has links)
The growing number of candidates for allied health programs and the continued quest for identification of ideal candidates increases the pressure for allied health programs to continually improve their selection process. Despite past and recent research and the significant amount of literature on admission criteria for selective allied health programs, there is limited research on faculty perceptions of the interview as part of the admission criteria. For this study, interviews were conducted with fifteen allied health faculty members who teach in a program with selective admissions. The interviews consisted of seven open-ended questions and were audio-recorded, then transcribed through Temi.com. The transcriptions were analyzed for common themes. The participants agreed that an interview is an important component of the selective admissions criteria particularly for assessing the candidate’s ability to communicate and interact with others.

Sexting Unleashed: The Social Phenomenon According to Youth Sexters

McGraw, Jessica Marie 13 December 2013 (has links)
What is missing from academia and society at large is a more holistic picture of youth sexting. Not adequately understanding youth sexting has stunted previous attempts to effectively educate young people on its potential consequences. As such, the social and legal consequences of sexting gone viral have negatively impacted countless individuals. This study offers a preliminary glimpse of the sexting phenomenon by highlighting the experiences of 20 young people. I explore emergent themes regarding the nature of youth sexting as well as the interrelations amongst privacy, relationships, and sexting. Two distinct forms of sexting emerged from participant narratives, opening the door for more open-minded discussions and social policies cognizant of both the positive and negative outcomes of electronic forms of sexual communication. In general, participant discourse on youth sexting demonstrates a need for more research on the topic as well as updated forms of sexting education in schools and amongst families.

The Green Building Cookbook

Wiklund, Hannes January 2022 (has links)
The initial aim with the Green Building Cookbook was to create an archive of sustainable building materials and elements, that could potentially serve as a guide and knowledge-base for architects. In the course of the project it has developed into an archive of the parts making up one specific building. This enabled thorough research and development of the chosen materials. This method of reviewing, selecting and adapting is what formed the process and in turn the building, Villa Håknäs. The shift towards a more sustainable construction sector has already begun, and the we as architects can be a driving force in that shift.

Doctors and "Dopefiends": Perspectives on the U.S Opiate Crisis, 21st Century

Foerster, John C 01 January 2020 (has links) (PDF)
This article examines the socio-political intricacies of the United States Opiate Crisis. By first addressing the pharmaceutical origins of Oxycontin and its pain relief benefits within the United States, I construct a framework by which a conversation about substance abuse can move forward. Within the first chapter I provide background into the arguments for medicalization against personal responsibility as it relates to opiate withdrawal and seeking treatment for the prior. Furthermore, I include subheadings to further provide insight into Medically Assisted Treatment Centers and their function on the local level. I contrast these modern treatment models with the Reagan War on Drugs mentalities and illustrate a larger societal tonal shift towards increased medicalization. My second chapter addresses the bulk of my theoretical frameworks, including spatial and feminist theories to construct an argument about patriarchal dominance in relation to factors such as homelessness, race, and socioeconomic status. Finally, in my third chapter I examine the current debate regarding whether or not the U.S. Opiate Crisis can truly be considered a crisis. I address the arguments for why it could still be considered a widespread crisis, and end on the central argument for the crisis being a symptom of Disease of Despair.

"Jag kunde inte ha brytt mig mindre om jag fått ett längre fängelsestraff, jag var inte redo att lägga av ändå" : - En undersökning om före detta kriminellas väg in i kriminalitet, och om deras syn på skärpta fängelsestraff i Sverige

Höglund Svensson, Felicia January 2023 (has links)
The aim of my essay was to describe the connection and find similarities between criminal persons childhood and how they ended up in crime. The aim has also been to find out whether tougher punishments would help to reduce crime in society, based on the perspective of former criminals. To achieve my aim, I formulated two research questions that deal with excriminals’ experiences. I chose to do a semi-structured, qualitative investigation grounded on six deep interviews with former criminals. The theory I used was grounded theory, which involves empirical research with observations of real stories as a source of knowledge. The result of my essay showed that there are some risk factors that can cause a person to end up in crime. All interviewees have had one or a few of these risk factors. The results also showed that none of the interviewees believed that it would help to have tougher punishments as a measure to reduce crime in society.

To Have and To Toke: Qualitative Study of Marijuana Use and Relationships

Sparks, Jessica Lindsey 14 December 2013 (has links)
Marijuana has been found to be the sole substance used by 57.3 percent of illicit drug users in the United States (NSDUH 2008). Taking this statistic into mind, it makes sense that individuals currently wed, divorced, cohabitating, or in some form of committed, romantic relationship would also be affected by the use of marijuana. While in today’s society the process of mate selection and relationship formation is considered to be a rather private and personal affair, some aspects of relationships still have consequences for the greater society. The effects of failed pairings on the individuals involved can have numerous repercussions; such ramifications are only multiplied when children are present within the relationship. The purpose of this project was to gain an understanding of the interplay between marijuana use and relationships and to better understand the means and methods by which relationships and marijuana use change over time. The influence of one’s personal, committed relationships on the increase, decrease, initiation, or cessation of marijuana use is examined in this study. Through the use of qualitative, in-depth interviews with 19-seven current and former users of marijuana, the underlying processes and events associated with the use of marijuana within relationships are better understood. According to the current research, marijuana can have both positive and negative repercussion on the romantic relationships of users. However, the most negative impacts on relationships tend to be seen when partners are unequally matched on their usage of the substance.
