Considerations were then made on physical and environmental aspects of the regions, taking into account the literature in the area, as well as historical narratives produced about the floods, which are part of the history of the region. The research used two qualitative techniques: participant observation and semi-structured interviews, with open-ended questions. From the oral history perspective, which included fifteen key informants, it was observed that the Vale do Itajaí region tends to witness the occurrence of floods due to its physical and spatial features, aspects which have been reported and experienced throughout its history; based on these recurrent events, attention is drawn to the victims of the 2008 flood, who have been creating solutions, based on their experience, creativity and memory, to avoid becoming victims of another flood, taking on responsibilities that belong to the public authorities / Esta dissertação tem como objetivo geral: identificar e analisar quais são as percepções e representações das pessoas que viveram a enchente no município de Itajaí, como estas se expressam e convivem com este evento, pretendendo contribuir com a análise das enchentes e desastres no município de Itajaí. Para isto, foram feitas considerações acerca dos aspectos físicos e ambientais da região, considerando a literatura da área, bem como um levantamento das narrativas históricas produzidas sobre as enchentes e inundações, que fazem parte da história da região. Para a pesquisa foram utilizadas duas técnicas qualitativas: técnicas da observação participante e de entrevista aberta semi-estruturada. Na perspectiva da história oral, realizadas com quinze informantes chaves. Observa-se que a região do Vale do Itajaí é propícia a incidências de enchentes em virtude de suas características físicas e espaciais, aspectos que tem sido relatados e vivenciado ao longo da sua história; em que pese a recorrência destes eventos chama a atenção como os atingidos pela enchente de 2008 vem, através da sua experiência e criatividade, bem como de sua memória, criando soluções para se prevenirem de uma nova enchente, assumindo atribuições que caberiam, também, aos poderes públicos
