Pollination and breeding systems of alien invasive plants in KwaZulu - Natal in South Africa.Rambuda, Tendani Dennis. 04 February 2014 (has links)
According to Baker (1955), success of plant invasions can be attributed to autogamous breeding
systems and generalist pollination systems. A test of Baker's rule was carried out on 19 invasive
alien plant species in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Natural levels of fruit set in these plants was
high (median= 71.5% fruit set per plant). Breeding system experiments for 18 species showed that
17% of the species are allogamous, 72 % are autogamous and 11% are apomictic. This contrasts
markedly with a general flora of 1472 species in which 65% are allogamous, only 14% are
autogamous, and 21% are apomictic. Because the breeding systems of the alien species were largely
autogamous, pollinators make only a small contribution to the overall reproductive success. Seventy
one percent of the 14 alien species for which pollinators were obtained were pollinated by
honeybees, which are super-generalists and ubiquitous in a generalist pollination systems. However,
some species showed pre-adaptation to relatively specialized pollination systems, involving
hawkmoths, butterflies and Xylocopa bees respectively. Thus, alien plants were not visited by a wide
range of insects, but rather showed pre-adaption to one or more pre-existing guilds in the new
habitat. Pollen limitation experiments showed no evidence that reproductive success in populations

Effects of an invasive consumer on zooplankton communities are unaltered by nutrient inputsSinclair, JAMES 31 January 2014 (has links)
Interactions between multiple anthropogenic stressors can have unexpected synergistic or antagonistic effects, making it difficult to predict their combined effect using single stressor studies. The interaction between invasive consumers and nutrient enrichment is particularly important as both of these stressors frequently co-occur and their respective bottom-up and top-down effects have the potential to interact across multiple trophic levels. We conducted a mesocosm experiment that crossed an increasing nutrient addition gradient against an increasing zebra mussel invasion gradient. Native zooplankton communities were added to the mesocosms, and after three months we examined how the single stressor effects on available resources and the zooplankton community were altered by their multiple stressor interaction. Added nutrients had no effect on primary producer abundance, but increased the abundance and dominance of the top consumer, which likely increased predation pressure on the producers and so prevented their response to increased nutrients. Zebra mussels reduced total phytoplankton abundance by ~75%, rotifer abundance by ~80%, and shifted communities towards dominance of cladocerans and adult/juvenile copepods. When combined, the top-down control exerted by the mussels interacted antagonistically to prevent any bottom-up influence of nutrient enrichment on the zooplankton community. Costs and benefits of eradicating alien invasive vegetation from the upper reaches of the Mhlatuze catchment.Cooper, Jenny. January 2001 (has links)
Alien invasive vegetation threatens the functioning of natural ecosystems as well as their services, which sustain human welfare, both directly and indirectly. The proliferation of this vegetation in South Africa has been attributed to the ignorance of the social implications affiliated to their existence. Investment decisions are predominantly based on the marginal private costs of an activity, since individuals have not been made accountable for costs imposed on society in the past. Consequently, their marginal private costs always fall well short of the marginal social costs. In order to promote sustainable development as well as curtail widespread invasion by alien plants in South Africa, it is essential to close the gap between these costs and support research aimed at ascertaining monetary values for non-market goods, such as biodiversity. This study scrutinizes the economic viability of alien plant eradication in the Mhlatuze Catchment by comparing the costs and benefits associated with this eradication process. A series of formal in-depth interviews with major stakeholders residing in the upper reaches of the catchment were conducted in an attempt to evoke individuals' perceptions concerning alien vegetation together with the actual costs incurred in extirpating this vegetation. The contingent valuation method (CVM), which relies on surveys to elicit the maximum amount respondents would be willing to pay to obtain or retain some nonmarket good, was employed to glean monetary values for benefits such as biodiversity and augmented streamflow. The findings suggest that there is a positive net effect associated with alien vegetation extirpation in the Mhlatuze Catchment, since the social benefits outweigh the costs. Given the temporal and financial constraints that prevailed, it was only possible to examine some of the benefits affiliated to this process, such as increased timber harvesting, streamflow, biodiversity and reduced fire hazard. Consequently, this analysis represents a minimum estimate of the benefits, further enhancing the argument in favour of extirpation. Complex Effects of Human-Impacted Landscapes on the Spatial Patterns of Mammalian CarnivoresHeim, Nicole Alexis 01 May 2015 (has links)
In the face of an expanding global human footprint, mammalian carnivores have become vulnerable to the effects of large-scale landscape change. Throughout North America, wide-ranging terrestrial carnivores have experienced significant species declines and range retractions. Understanding the complex and interacting effects of human-caused habitat disturbance on highly mobile species remains an ongoing challenge for ecologists. To address these challenges, studies commonly select a focal species to examine the adverse effects of human disturbance. Due to the paucity of multi-species study, little is yet known about the relative role interspecific interactions play within communities of carnivores in human-altered systems. In an effort to address this knowledge gap, I examined occurrence patterns of one species known to be sensitive to human disturbance – the wolverine – and compared occurrence patterns among multiple carnivores across a gradient of increasing human land use within a rugged and heterogeneous landscape in the Canadian Rocky Mountains of Alberta.
I surveyed carnivore occurrence by combining remote camera trapping and non-invasive genetic tagging. Using a systematic grid based design, medium to large sized carnivores were detected over an area approximately 15,000km2. Consistent with the literature, I found wolverines to be less likely to occur outside of protected areas boundaries and with increasing human-caused landscape disturbance. Contrary to recent climate-focused hypotheses, the spatial pattern of wolverine occurrence was best explained by cumulative effects. When modeling multiple carnivore occurrence across this spatial gradient of human land use, no generality in response was observed. However, a consistent and distinct dissimilarity in response to natural and anthropogenic landscape features was found between wolverine and coyote.
The patterns of occurrence led me to infer that habitat condition in the more human-altered systems found along eastern slopes of the Canadian Rocky Mountains is less suitable for some more sensitive species and benefits more human-adapted species. I further hypothesized that an indirect and additive effect of human disturbance is increased interspecific competition between co-occurring carnivores that differentially respond to changes in habitat condition. My results emphasize that by broadening our scope to investigate both single and multiple species, ecologists and managers may better understand the full suite of factors influencing current and future distribution patterns. / Graduate / heimnikki@gmail.com

An Investigation into the Habitat Requirements, Invasiveness and Potential Extent of male fern, Dryopteris filix-mas (L.) Schott, in Canterbury, New ZealandUre, Graeme Alfred January 2014 (has links)
The vegetation of New Zealand has undergone extreme changes during the period of European settlement, with not only forest clearance but a deliberate attempt to replace the native vegetation with species from Europe and later from other parts of the world. Garden escapes continue this process to the current day.
Several European ferns that have been introduced to New Zealand gardens have subsequently escaped. At the time of writing D. filix-mas is the most obvious and probably the most abundant in the rural areas of Canterbury having been observed in a wide range of habitats from suburban to farm, to forests both plantation and montane and in shrublands.
This thesis investigates some of the ecology of D. filix-mas and explores its potential as a weed detrimental to New Zealand’s indigenous ecosystems. An extensive literature review revealed that in the Northern Hemisphere D. filix-mas grows over a wide range of climates, vegetation types and soils. However the literature review did not clearly show the forest light conditions under which D. filix-mas grows nor could the Northern Hemisphere experience in deciduous woodlands and coniferous forests be directly carried over into New Zealand’s podocarps, evergreen hardwood and evergreen beech forests. An experiment was designed to investigate tolerance to shade and field data was collected at several sites across North Canterbury for subsequent investigation with ordination and standard statistical methods. Records from around New Zealand were collated and used to generate a map of potential extent using the Land Environments New Zealand dataset.
Positive growth was achieved under all shade treatments including the heaviest at 96% shade. However the field data suggests that under some of the lowest light availability D. filix-mas does not grow. In the field D. filix-mas is found in diverse habitats with a preference for sheltered sites with more southerly than northerly aspects. Interpretation of the ordination output combined with knowledge of the sites suggests that D. filix-mas is mostly associated with degraded sites and sites of past disturbance. Regenerating kanuka is a reliable place in which to find D. filix-mas but relatively natural beech forest is not. D. filix-mas can potentially grow over much of the South Island particularly in drier areas and can be invasive following disturbance and when grazing is removed, making it a potential problem for indigenous forest restoration efforts.

Facilitative Interactions Among Native Perennial Shrubs and Native and Exotic Annuals in Recovering Coastal Sage ScrubMiranda, Courtney Elizabeth 01 January 2013 (has links)
Facilitative interactions can have a powerful influence on the structure of plant communities and must be accounted for in efforts to restore disturbed and invaded habitats, such as the now rare coastal sage scrub (CSS) of California. In this study, I tested for evidence of facilitative effects by the native shrubs Eriogonum fasciculatum var. foliolosum and Artemisia californica on germination and survival of the CSS native annual forb Phacelia distans. P. distans seeds were planted near patches of native shrubs, both under the shrub canopy where any facilitative effects should be strongest, and 0.5 m away in the more exposed grassland. To determine whether the shrub-forb relationship was affected by the presence of invasive annuals, E. fasciculatum sites were assigned either invasive annual removal or non-removal control treatment; no removal treatments were carried out for A. californica.
P. distans had significantly higher germination but lower survivorship under the canopy of E. fasciculatum. The results showed no overall effect of invasive removal, but there was a weak interaction effect with location; in shrub-canopy plots, invasive species further lowered survivorship. A. californica showed neither facilitative nor negative effects of this shrub species on either germination or survivorship of P. distans, in contrast with the results for E. fasciculatum. Although E. fasciculatum appears to facilitate the germination of native forbs under its canopy, it also seems to have a negative effect on survival. The weak interaction between location and removal to further decrease survival under the canopy when invasives are present, and the abundance of grasses growing under the canopy, suggest that native shrubs may facilitate the growth of invasive annuals as well as the germination of natives. Consequently, controlling invasive grass abundance may be necessary to capture the benefits of shrub facilitation for the restoration of native CSS herbs.

A Study of Post-Fire Recovery in Invaded Coastal Sage Scrub at the Bernard Field StationVon Schaumburg, Dana Marie 01 January 2014 (has links)
Coastal sage scrub (CSS), a lowland plant community native to California, is home to many rare, threatened, or endangered plants and animals. Fire, a natural feature of CSS, is essential for maintaining species diversity. However, the invasion of non-native grasses has altered the fire regime in CSS, increasing fire frequency and fire season length and decreasing fire intensity. Changes in the historical fire regime may in turn cause feedbacks that favor non-native species, resulting in the loss of biodiversity in invaded CSS sites. Numerous studies have examined patterns of post-fire succession in CSS; however, the role that the pre-fire seed bank and the relative abundance of natives to non-natives play in vegetation regrowth and community recovery is unclear. A lack of adequate pre-fire data on community composition makes testing hypotheses about the role of seed banks in post-fire recovery challenging. I propose to study recovery of the plant community in two differentially invaded CSS sites (East and West field) following a fire at the Bernard Field Station in September 2013. Data collected at the two sites from 2009-2013 reveal that non-native grass cover was significantly higher than native cover at both sites, though the West field had slightly higher native forb cover. Furthermore, the invasive grass Bromus diandrus almost entirely dominated the East field. Vegetation cover in the West field was more diverse with the abundance of other non-natives (Bromus hordeaceus, Bromus madritensis, Vulpia myuros) and natives (Amsinckia menziesii, Lupinus spp.) significantly higher than in the East field. To determine the effects of these pre-fire differences on recovery processes, I will carry out a randomized block experiment with four treatments (control, native seed addition, non-native grass removal, and both native seed addition and removal of non-native grasses). Twelve blocks will be evenly divided between the East and West fields. I propose to measure relative seedling abundance for both native and non-native species after each significant rainstorm over a three-year study period. I hypothesize that the composition of seed banks pre-fire will predict vegetation regrowth post-fire. Specifically, I predict that, under control conditions, B. diandrus will dominate the East field post-fire given its high abundance pre-fire. Further, I predict that regrowth in controls plots in the West field will be more variable given its more diverse seed bank pre-fire. Lastly, I predict that native forbs will exhibit the greatest degree of recovery in plots where active restoration methods (seeding and non-native grass removal) are employed; the effects of these restoration methods should be strongest in the East field because the pre-fire vegetation community was more heavily weighed towards non-native species. This study will add crucial knowledge to our understanding of how the pre-fire seed bank in CSS affects its recovery post-fire, which may inform future conservation efforts to ensure the continued health and protection of CSS sites around California.

EXOTIC INVASIVE PLANTS IN KENTUCKYLiang, Yu 01 January 2010 (has links)
Invasion of exotic species is a significant problem in natural ecosystems, reaching epidemic proportions and resulting in significant economic losses. However, insufficient knowledge of explicit spatial distribution of invasive species hinders our ability to prevent and/or mitigate future invasion. In this study, we demonstrate the use of existing voluntary data to survey invasive plant species in Kentucky. We also reconstructed the historical distribution of 16 exotic invasive plants typical to Kentucky using herbarium records. We found that Kentucky is facing a large threat from exotic invasive plants as they are reported throughout most counties. The distribution maps for four of the top 10 most reported invasive species revealed that Kentucky is presently or was previously a front of invasion. The majority of the 16 targeted invasive species were scattered throughout Kentucky with no concentrations within particular regions. Cumulative curves of occupied counties over time fit a “J” shape expansion curve, which indicates the potential for further future invasion. This study demonstrates the usefulness of voluntary data and herbarium data to reconstruct the historical and current distribution of invasive species. Further studies on other invasive species can take advantage of information associated with herbarium specimens to achieve more fruitful results.

INITIAL RESPONSE OF INVASIVE EXOTIC PLANT SPECIES TO TIMBER HARVESTING IN SOUTHEASTERN KENTUCKY FORESTSDevine, Kevin Patrick 01 January 2011 (has links)
The responses of invasive exotic plant species (IES) to silvicultural treatments one growing season after timber harvesting were examined in the Cumberland Plateau region of Southeastern Kentucky. Treatments included a commercial deferment harvest and unharvested control applied to five watersheds within University of Kentucky’s Robinson Forest. The effects of harvesting were compared between treatments and between preharvest and postharvest samplings. The spatial distribution and abundance of targeted IES throughout forest sites and trail systems were calculated from several sampling schemes. Additional analyses were performed to quantify forest disturbances derived from harvest activities to determine the relationships between soil, light levels, and other environmental characteristics and IES cover. Logistic and multivariate analysis techniques were used to analyze differences in IES distribution between pre-harvest and post-harvest units to relate post-harvest IES to microsite conditions. Microsite conditions within the forest and along the trail system proved important for explaining the presence and distribution of IES. Timber harvesting caused a significant increase in both Ailanthus altissima and Microstegium vimineum within harvested areas. However, many other identified IES did not initially respond to disturbances. Throughout the treatment units, species were influenced by disturbance type and intensity, as well as proximity to reclaimed surface mined land.
