Moraes, Isabela Ribeiro Rocha January 2017 (has links)

Paci, Deborah 22 March 2013 (has links)
In 1923 the Fascist regime began a propaganda campaign by claiming the territories of Corsica and Malta, held by France and Great Britain, that were deemed to be Italian lands. The Fascist regime produced literature on Corsica and Malta that justified that both islands were Italian lands based on historic, ethnic, and linguistic grounds. The Fascists quoted historical, geographical, linguistic, ethnographic and cultural relations between the Italian peninsula and the island elite during the nineteenth century, in order to present evidence of the Italianità of Corsica and Malta. The Fascist regime activate cultural institutions and the majority of the Italian intellectuals in order to justify, on the ideological level, the irredentist and imperial ambitions in the Mediterranean basin. This research aims to investigate the myth of the Risorgimento Mediterranean, a myth that was created in order to explain to Italian public opinion the Mussolini's foreign policy regarding Corsica and Malta. The myth of the Risorgimento Mediterranean created a strong link between the imperial mission of ancient Rome and the "Mediterranean destiny" of the House of Savoy. It gradually became a prevalent subject in Fascist publications and writings of personalities of the Italian cultural life. This study aims to examine the distance and the convergence between the mythological construction of the Risorgimento Mediterranean and the reality of the Fascist territorial claims in the Mediterranean, in particular on Corsica and Malta.

An archaeological study of the Solglimt shipwreck survivor camp on sub-Antarctic Marion Island

Van Niekerk, Tara Rae 10 1900 (has links)
In a tale of survival, dubbed that of the “South Seas Crusoes”, a group of men overcame the odds by setting up camp on a deserted volcanic sub-Antarctic island in the middle of the Southern Indian Ocean. This group of men formed the crew of the Norwegian SS Solglimt sealing vessel which had wrecked on the sub-Antarctic Marion Island in October 1908. More than a century later remains of the shipwreck of the SS Solglimt can still be found lying exposed below the water in the bay of Ships Cove. In the valley north of the bay, the remnants of the shipwreck survivor camp associated with the wreck holds hidden stories of a terrestrial maritime landscape formed out of tragedy and the need to survive. It is mainly the remains of this camp which forms the basis of the research and discussion for this dissertation. The following study is not only an attempt to add to our knowledge and understanding of the archaeological remains on Marion Island, it is also to add to an existing body of knowledge involving shipwreck survivor camps. The remains on Marion Island have produced the perfect opportunity to fill gaps within the discipline of Maritime Archaeology, especially in South Africa where too often emphasis is placed on shipwreck studies and not enough on the events taking place before or after the crisis event. The following dissertation uses archaeological techniques alongside historical documents as a way to better understand the socio-cultural behaviour of survivors during events of disaster, isolation and the necessity to survive. The study will be used as a comparison to similar studies around the world and hopes to add to an existing body of knowledge involving survivor camps and disaster-response studies from an archaeological and anthropological perspective. / Anthropology and Archaeology / M.A. (Archaeology)

Ramos, Cléo Lindsey Machado January 2015 (has links)
The geodiversity, combined with geoconservation, is a relatively new issue that is rarely explored by the academic community in Brazil. But in recent years, there was the need for preservation strategies of geodiversity understood as the abiotic environment, consisting of rock compositions and relief resulting from geological and geomorphological phenomena that differentiate lithology and minerals lead to the genesis of diverse landscapes and great diversity of environments that favour the development of different forms of life on Earth. In order to preserve the great ecological relevance environments like the island, a survey of the geodiversity of the Pombas and Ponta Escura islands, in southern Brazil, was developed to quantify their intrinsic value, their potential use and need for protection for geoconservation. The methodological procedures included a preliminary study of the area from satellite images, a field work for sample collecting, laboratory testing, production of cartographic material and analysis of the results. The islands have different genesis, one of them sedimentary (Ponta Escura) and the other rocky (Pombas). Particle size and morphometric characteristics of its sediments also differ one from another, where the Pombas features larger particle sizes ranging in very thick sand granule sizes, and immature grains, while on the island of Ponta Escura there was a greater rounding of grains and grain size with a high percentage of medium sand. The mineralogy, the Ponta Escura island stands out for its high amount of heavy minerals, especially tourmaline. Entisols predominate in both islands, with distinct suborders of Lithic (Leptosols/WRB-FAO) and Fluvents (Fluvisols/WRB-FAO) on the island of Pombas to Quartzipsamments (Arenosols/WRB-FAO) in Ponta Escura. The vegetation, whose floristic lacks scientific description, has a vegetation type characterized by diverse strata – interspersed with high size cacti – from a lower herbaceous to the canopy, sometimes highlighting tallest trees. The presence of individuals of some exotic species of flora witness to past anthropogenic interference with the original vegetation in both islands, most notably in Ponta Escura. Finally, adopting the methodology developed by Brilha (2005), we proceeded with the quantification to geoconservation purposes, which showed relatively high value in proportion to the islands size and to their belonging to an integral protection area. It is proposed an extension of the study area, including other islands that make up the lake Guaiba, relating the knowledge of geodiversity and biodiversity as strategies for geoconservation and management of human presence, because the unregulated human action can directly impact environments that may be sensitive and dynamic as on the islands of this study.

Food Security and Small Scale Aquaponics: A Case Study on the Northern Mariana Island of Rota

Foskett, Dustin 14 January 2015 (has links)
Aquaponics has recently emerged on the global scene as a viable form of alternative agriculture. A combination of practices, such as growing and harvesting fish (aquaculture) along with "hydroponically" grown fruits and vegetables, aquaponics integrates traditional agriculture practices with twenty-first century scientific food producing methods. In this thesis, I analyze the literature on aquaponics and connect it firmly within the current social and environmental discussions of the food security discourse among Pacific Island Countries and Territories in order to provide a context of geographical relevance of fish and vegetable producing systems. I also provide data from the Northern Mariana Island of Rota to showcase why and how aquaponics may be a viable option for improving food security within such a context. I then argue that the aquaponic project on the island of Rota helps serve as one potential pathway to improving food security. / 2015-07-14
