Alienation and Isolation in Interracial Marriages in East Tennessee.

Morris, Sheila Dianne 13 December 2003 (has links) (PDF)
I conducted this study to determine if African American men and women who marry white men and women in East Tennessee perceive experiences of isolation and alienation from their families and friends as a result of their selection of a mate from a race other than the one into which they were born. I interviewed ten individuals who are or have been interracially married. As a result of my research, I found that my results compare favorably with those of scholarly studies that discovered alienation and isolation among interracial couples. I used descriptive research methods to analyze a segment of the Appalachian population, with literature reviews of related material and in-depth interviews conducted with subjects in the East Tennessee area. My study allowed the subjects to discuss their perceptions and feelings of being a part of this growing interracial population in East Tennessee.

I come as one but i stand as ten thousand: supporting the Lone Black Educator by cultivating white allies and co-conspirators

Pepple, Jessica Renee 17 May 2023 (has links)
Findings from Travis J. Bristol’s research article, “To Be Alone or In a Group: An Exploration into How the School-Based Experiences Differ for Black Male Teachers Across One Urban School District,” found that Black teachers who were in “Groupers schools,” those with four or more Black male teachers in the building, had a different experience than teachers who were in Loner-schools, those with one Black teacher. Loners from the Bristol study believed that being a Black teacher created apprehensions towards them from their white colleagues and reported having a greater desire to leave their schools than those teachers who were in buildings where there were groups of Black teachers. These findings are a forewarning for predominantly white school districts, buildings, administrators, and colleagues, to pay closer attention to the “Loners” in their building and begin to recognize how this can be an issue for Black teachers and further, impact future recruitment and retention levels for this population. This study examines the Lone Black Educators' lived experience/s to better understand their “position,” outlook, and approach to their role. The phenomena of this subpopulation were captured using a survey and qualitative interviews. Descriptive statistics and theme analytics captured and summarized the data from three sets of participants: Lone Black Female Educators (survey participants), Lone Black Educators from an urban school district, and white allies of the Lone Black Educators in the urban school district. The findings from this study disclosed four critical components that have shaped the negative experience/s of being a Lone Black Educator; they include: (a) a lack of belonging within the school building culture, (b) microaggressions endured by white colleagues, (c) having to intervene more often on behalf of Black students due to being a Lone Black Educator, and (d) working in an oppressive system as educational leaders. This study provides another perspective of the Lone Black Educator experience; that is, the perspectives of white allies and co-conspirators. The data collected revealed that white allies and co-conspirators are fostered over time and require a reflective space to learn and continue the journey of racial self-identity. Their journey towards antiracism began at various stages of life; the journey towards allyship was motivated by seeing different forms of oppression occur to people with whom they had frequent interactions, including, but not limited to: family members, Black and Brown students in their classrooms and non-familial adults in their networks. This awareness and compassion further prompted these allies to establish a professional relationship with the Lone Black Educator in their building and/or school district. In an effort to provide a resource for Lone Black Educators and to dismantle the existing state of affairs for Lone Black Educators, four strategies have emerged from this research to help predominantly white school districts better support Lone Black Educators; the strategies include: 1. Conducting a district equity audit and applying the recommendations set forth, 2. Providing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Professional Development for all staff, 3. Providing access for teachers of color to affiliate with racial affinity groups, 4. Facilitating restorative justice practices for racial bias and microaggression conflict resolutions. These strategies serve as a framework for districts to consider using to identify, address, and positively impact the experiences of Lone Black Educators while also dismantling oppressive structures that keep other Black educators out of the school building and/or school district.

Strangers and Intimates: A Collection of Short Stories

West, Kathy Marie 20 November 2009 (has links) (PDF)
This creative thesis includes five short stories that explore paradoxical ways in which people can feel alone, even if they are together. Although a combination of isolation and intimacy can occur in any human relationship, the stories in this collection spend much of their time with family circles in particular, considering the way that our closest, most permanent relationships can simultaneously prove the most intimate and the most isolating. The critical introduction that precedes the collection examines each story individually, discussing strategies and subject matter in terms of the collection's guiding concept. The introduction discusses the binary of intimacy and isolation, and how it relates to fiction's ability to evoke sympathy in its readers.

The Hysterical Woman: An Analysis of Trauma in Gothic Women’s Literature and Modern Horror Film

Holdway, Molly 01 May 2023 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis explores trauma related to hysteria through themes of confinement, isolation, and motherhood in the works “The Yellow Wallpaper” (1892) by Charlotte Perkins-Gilman, The Haunting of Hill House (1959) by Shirley Jackson, and The Babadook (2014) directed by Jennifer Kent. Hysteria is explored first as a diagnosis and then as a weaponized term meant to keep women facing isolation and grief in a continuous state of oppression. The gothic and gothic horror genres display these themes through the dark nature of the human mind, which is vital in understanding the stories of the female characters discussed and the traumas they face. The setting of the home is used to acknowledge women’s oppression related to trauma as it is a domestic setting that is known for confining women, particularly when trauma is explored through hysteria and the rest cure, the basis in which hysteria and isolation is explored.

[en] ANALYSIS OF THE INSULATION OF AERIAL TRANSMISSION LINES SUBJECT TO VOLTAGE SURGES / [pt] ESTUDO DE ISOLAMENTO DE LINHAS AÉREAS DE TRANSMISSÃO SUBMETIDAS A SURTOS DE TENSÃO

PAULO ALEXANDRE MACHADO 12 February 2008 (has links)
[en] Many aspects of an electric utility power system design must be evaluated in detail prior to construction and operation. The choice of insulation requirements on eletric utility system equipment is dictated both by the steady state conditions as well as by overvoltages which can occur on the system. Transmission lines, which are the way to carry energy, are certainly involved in this problem. Therefore it is very important to know their insulation behavior. The purpose of this work is to give the engineer conditions to analyze transmission lines behavior, by way of two digital programs, one concerning lightining strokes and the other switching surges.

Healing heroes virtually: a health and wellness program for older adults living in a community living center

Samardak, Renee Gonzalez 08 May 2023 (has links)
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Veterans living in the Kerrville VA community living center were required to shelter in place, isolate, and quarantine, much like the rest of the world during the Spring of 2020. Although the Veterans were potentially safe, they were experiencing increased loneliness and feelings of isolation; in turn, their quality of life suffered. In the Ibrahim & Dahlan (2015) article, the authors underscore the importance of engagement in occupations to improve quality of life, as occupational engagement facilitates life’s purpose. Healing Heroes Virtually aims to improve quality of life, provide opportunities for occupational engagement, learning a new skill to bridge the digital divide gap among the older adult population living in long-term care facilities. The Diffusion of Innovation Theory (DOI) will direct this program improvement project within long-term care facilities. This theory introduces innovation to potential adopters (Veterans & staff at the Kerrville VA) and disseminates it into social systems. Timing is also essential when utilizing the DOI theory to move the program. The authors (Abbott-Gaffney et al., 2022) found that “organizations can remove barriers by providing multiple learning opportunities and support to reinforce the learner’s confidence, therefore increasing the likelihood of continued use of telehealth as a service delivery model.” Adult Learning Theory will also be utilized considering the various learning styles adult learners receive/learn information. It is essential for the Veteran to feel comfortable and confident in the newfound skill. The program should run for ten weeks, two times a week, to educate and introduce the iPad, Zoom application, and program to the Veterans. Between weeks four and seven, the goal will be troubleshooting and increasing independence with technology use. During weeks eight through ten, programs such as an exercise session, current events hour, or a virtual Bible study will occur. The Veterans will be given surveys, and staff will evaluate the program’s success for future use. The goal is to create a library of various activities/sessions available to Veterans. Healing Heroes was made with the idea that if the world shuts down again, these Heroes will have the opportunity for occupational engagement and not have to endure occupational deprivation and alienation.

High-isolation antenna array using SIW and realized with a graphene layer for sub-terahertz wireless applications

Alibakhshikenari, M., Virdee, B.S., Salekzamankhani, S., Aïssa, S., Soin, N., Fishlock, S.J., Althuwayb, A.A., Abd-Alhameed, Raed, Huynen, I., McLaughlin, J.A., Falcone, F., Limiti, E. 02 November 2021 (has links)
Yes / This paper presents the results of a study on developing an effective technique to increase the performance characteristics of antenna arrays for sub-THz integrated circuit applications. This is essential to compensate the limited power available from sub-THz sources. Although conventional array structures can provide a solution to enhance the radiation-gain performance however in the case of small-sized array structures the radiation properties can be adversely affected by mutual coupling that exists between the radiating elements. It is demonstrated here the effectiveness of using SIW technology to suppress surface wave propagations and near field mutual coupling effects. Prototype of 2 × 3 antenna arrays were designed and constructed on a polyimide dielectric substrate with thickness of 125 μm for operation across 0.19-0.20 THz. The dimensions of the array were 20 × 13.5 × 0.125 mm3. Metallization of the antenna was coated with 500 nm layer of Graphene. With the proposed technique the isolation between the radiating elements was improved on average by 22.5 dB compared to a reference array antenna with no SIW isolation. The performance of the array was enhanced by transforming the patch to exhibit metamaterial characteristics. This was achieved by embedding the patch antennas in the array with sub-wavelength slots. Compared to the reference array the metamaterial inspired structure exhibits improvement in isolation, radiation gain and efficiency on average by 28 dB, 6.3 dBi, and 34%, respectively. These results show the viability of proposed approach in developing antenna arrays for application in sub-THz integrated circuits. / Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades, Gobierno de España (MCIU/AEI/FEDER, UE) under Grant RTI2018-095499-B-C31, in part by the Innovation Programme under Grant H2020-MSCA-ITN-2016 SECRET-722424, and in part by the U.K. Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) under Grant EP/E022936/1.

Launch Vibration Attenuation For In-Space Assembly Cargo

Bell, Jered 01 December 2023 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis investigates the implementation of a passive isolator with a pressurized air cushion for spacecraft payloads in mission architectures implementing in-space assembly technologies. A pressurized air bed capable of briefly surviving the space environment for cargo delivery was prototyped and experimentally evaluated for launch vehicle vibration dynamics resulting in a 72%, 93%, and 88% reduction in experienced GRMS loads for the X-Axis, Y-Axis, and Z-Axis, respectively. A preliminary Total Mass Loss evaluation of the Low-Density Polyethylene Film utilized for the air bed resulted in a mass loss of 0.7%, indicating that commercial off-the-shelf films might require minimal modification for flight readiness. An analytical model of a planar rectangular payload experiencing free vibrations with a Winkler foundation is generated and compared to the experimental results, showing a potential way for characterizing and designing such a foundation to reduce experienced vibrations. These preliminary results show a potential path for a non-cost-prohibitive method for space payloads to reduce loads experienced during launch as inspired by the successful hosted payloads program aboard the International Space Station.
