[pt] CARACTERIZAÇÃO DA MATÉRIA ORGÂNICA PARTICULADA NA TRANSIÇÃO BAÍA DE GUANABARA OCEANO COSTEIRO USANDO MARCADORES ISOTÓPICOS E MOLECULARES / [en] CHARACTERIZATION OF PARTICULATE ORGANIC MATTER IN A GUANABARA BAYCOASTAL OCEAN TRANSITION USING ISOTOPIC AND MOLECULAR MARKERS

JULIANNA MARIA DE ALMEIDA MARTINS 17 July 2020 (has links)
[en] Suspended particulate organic matter (POM) present between Guanabara Bay and the coastal ocean was characterized by elemental composition (C and N), isotopic ratios (delta13C and delta15N) and molecular markers (sterols, n-alcohols and fatty acids) in two periods (summer and fall) along a transect and a fixed station. Elemental (C/N of 5 to 23) and isotopic (delta13C= -27.7 to -16.2 per thousand and delta15N = 2.4 to 11.2 per thousand) signatures were typical for the predominance of planktonic organic matter. Fatty acids (totals of 12.08 ± 7.78 microgram L–1 in summer and 22.06 ± 1.75 microgram L–1 in the fall for the transect, and 13.47 ± 5.15 microgram L–1 in summer and 15.84 ± 3.61 microgram L–1 in the fall for the fixed station) were presente as short-chain, monoand poly-unsaturated compounds. Total sterol concentrations ranged from 0.04 to 7.32 microgram L–1, with the predominance of cholesterol and phytosterols. n-alcohols were a minor component (0.01 to 5.67 microgram L–1 ). The multi-proxy approach revealed an overwhelming contribution of autochthonous POM sources, reflecting the influence of the Guanabara Bay outflow on ecological processes in the transition zone considered herein. Fecal contribution to POM was also identified, albeit as a less significant component, possibly due to dilution caused by autochthonus sources or degradation of fecal markers. Moreover, the terrestriallyderived POM was not exported from the bay and, therefore, must experience an accumulation process in the inner bay sediments. This supports the need to quantify such continental contribution to better establish the carbon balance in the bay.

Paleoenviromentální záznam jezerních sedimentů karbonu středočeských a západočeských pánví:analýza a korelace mineralních a biogenních proxy / Paleoenvironmental record of carboniferous lacustrine deposits of central and western Bohemian basins: analysis and korealiton of mineral and biogenic proxies

Lojka, Richard January 2012 (has links)
Ph.D. thesis represents summary of multidiciplinary palaeoenvironmental and palaeoclimatic research of the most significant Late Pennsylvanian lacustrine horizon of the central and western Bohemian basins - the Malesice Member of the Slaný Formation. Two cores from new shallow drills, situated 80 km apart, were analysed. Multidisciplinary approach is based on description of lamination structure and periodicity; mineral and isotopic composition of autigennic carbonates, namely siderite; compositiona of detrital minerals including clay mineral assemblages; and composition of autochthonous and allochthonous organic particles including palynospectra. Detailed analysis of drill cores lead to the identification of individual phases of lake development linked with lake-level fluctuation and water-column stratification, which were driven by a sume of precipitation and its seasonal distribution. Changes in precipitation also affected compostion and density of vegetational cover in the lake surroundings, weathering intesity of source rocks and degradation of organic matter in the drainage basin, and so precipitation affected final grain-size and composition of detrital material deposited in the lake. Beside common environmental signatures at both studied sites, there are also significant...

Estudos petrográficos e geocronológicos do prospecto Mankombiti, Cinturão de Fíngoè, Província de Tete, noroeste de Moçambique / not available

Mahanjane, Laura Nilza Mendes 27 November 2013 (has links)
The Fíngoè belt is a tectonic unit of West Gondwana Supercontinent, comprised of supracrustal rocks formed at approximately 1.33 Ga. These rocks are carriers of Au, Cu, Zn, Pb and Fe mineralization. With about 150 km long and oriented WSW- ENE, this belt extends from west of the Atchiza Mount to about 30 km east of the Fíngoè village in the north Mozambique, and consists of an extensive variety of metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks. The Fíngoè metallogenic belt provides specialization for Au and Cu, which have been exploited in the past in various locations. Many of these records are associated with magnetite and malachite. Currently, the prospecting and mineral exploration have been conducted by the African Queen Mines Ltd mining company, through a project called the King Solomons, located in the central part of it. The geology of the studied area shows a predominance of carbonate rocks, granites and gabbros. The carbonate rocks are considered important in the genesis of the skarn deposits type and deposits of replacement for base metals and Au due to its highly reactive nature. The geochronological data performed in this work indicate a precise age of the 1079.1 ± 8.2 Ma for the intrusive granitic rock associated with mineralization, which could be interpreted as the age of the skarn and consequently of the mineralization. However the age obtained for the hydrothermal alteration that affected the gabbro at about 657 ± 36 Ma and the Pb-Pb model age suggested by the model of Stacey and Kramers (1975) for primary chalcopyrite mineralization at 725 Ma, suggesting that the mineralization of the Mankombiti prospectus was developed during the Neoproterozoic time. For understanding the processes that were involved in the skarn-type mineralization processes, two hypotheses are here considered: (i) could be admitted the presence of i ntrusive granitic rocks at 700 Ma, situated in depth, which have not yet been characterized, as responsible for the heat source required, (ii) may be admitted occurrence of an extensional event at 700 Ma to produce a thinning of the lithosphere and the uplift of the asthenosphere, producing high thermal flows generating the mineralization fluids.

Soil organic matter dynamics: influence of soil disturbance on labile pools

Zakharova, Anna January 2014 (has links)
Soils are the largest pool of carbon (C) in terrestrial ecosystems and store 1500 Gt of C in their soil organic matter (SOM). SOM is a dynamic, complex and heterogeneous mixture, which influences soil quality through a wide range of soil properties. Labile SOM comprises a small fraction of total SOM (approximately 5%), but due to its rapid turnover has been suggested to be most vulnerable to loss following soil disturbance. This research was undertaken to examine the consequences of soil disturbance on labile SOM, its availability and protection in soils using the isotopic analysis of soil-respired CO₂ (δ¹³CO₂). A range of soils were incubated in both the short- (minutes) and long-term (months) to assess changes in labile SOM. Shifts in soil-respired δ¹³CO₂ over the course of soil incubations were found to reflect changes in labile substrate utilisation. There was a rapid depletion of δ¹³CO₂ (from a starting range between -22.5 and -23.9‰, to between -25.8 and -27.5‰) immediately after soil sampling. These initial changes in δ¹³CO₂ indicated an increased availability of labile SOM following the disturbance of coring the soil and starting the incubations. Subsequently δ¹³CO₂ reverted back to the initial, relatively enriched starting values, but this took several months and was due to labile SOM pools becoming exhausted. A subsequent study was undertaken to test if soil-respired δ¹³CO₂ values are a direct function of the amount of labile SOM and soil physical conditions. A range of pasture soils were incubated in the short-term (300 minutes), and changes in soil-respired δ¹³CO₂ were measured along with physical and chemical soil properties. Equilibrium soil-respired δ¹³CO₂, observed after the initial rapid depletion and stabilisation, was a function of the amount of labile SOM (measured as hot water extractable C, HWEC), total soil C and soil protection capacity (measured as specific soil surface area, SSA). An independent experimental approach to assess the effect of SSA, where labile SOM was immobilised onto allophane – a clay mineral with large, active surface area – indicated limited availability of labile SOM through more enriched δ¹³CO₂ (in a range between -20.5 and -20.6 ‰) and a significant (up to three times) reduction in HWEC. In the third study, isotopic measurements were coupled with CO₂ evolution rates to directly test whether equilibrium soil-respired δ¹³CO₂ can reflect labile SOM vulnerability to loss. Soils were sampled from an experimental tillage trial with different management treatments (chemical fallow, arable cropping and permanent pasture) with a range of C inputs and soil disturbance regimes. Soils were incubated in the short- (300 minutes) and long-term (600 days) and changes in δ¹³CO₂ and respiration rates measured. Physical and chemical fractionation methods were used to quantify the amount of labile SOM. Pasture soils were characterised by higher labile SOM estimates (HWEC; sand-sized C; labile C respired during long-term incubations) than the other soils. Long-term absence of plant inputs in fallow soils resulted in a significant depletion of labile SOM (close to 50% based on sand-sized C and HWEC estimates) compared with pasture soils. The values of δ¹³CO₂ became more depleted in 13C from fallow to pasture soils (from -26.3 ‰ to -28.1 ‰) and, when standardised (against the isotopic composition of the solid soil material), Δ¹³CO₂ values also showed a decrease from fallow to pasture soils (from -0.3 ‰ to -1.1 ‰). Moreover, these patterns in isotopic measures were in strong agreement with the amount of labile SOM and its availability across the soils, and were best explained by the isotopic values of the labile HWEC fraction. Collectively, these results confirm that labile SOM availability and utilisation change immediately after soil disturbance. Moreover, isotopic analysis of soil-respired CO₂ is a powerful technique, which enables us to probe mechanisms and examine the consequences of soil disturbance on labile SOM by reflecting its availability and the degree of SOM protection.

Etude de la composition isotopique (deutérium et oxygène 18) de la vapeur d'eau dans l'atmosphère sur l'île de La Réunion : apport à la compréhension des processus humides atmosphériques en région tropicale / The isotopic composition (δ18O et δD) of water vapor in Reunion Island (Inidean ocean) : toward a better comprehension of wet atmospheric processes in tropical region

Guilpart, Etienne 23 January 2018 (has links)
The isotopic composition of water vapor (dO18 and dD) is commonly used to study present and past water cycle and its varations. If this geochemical tool has been widely used to study past polar climates, many questions remain about the factors governing the isotopic composition of water in the tropics. The goal of this thesis is (1) to monitor the isotopic composition of water vapor in Reunion island (Indian Ocean), and (2) to evaluate the potential of theses measurements for understanding humid climate processes. We have set up a laser spectrometer at the Maïdo Atmospheric Observatory, allowing us to obtain a three-year chronicle of measurements.First, we analyze the temporal variability in our measurements. The isotopic composition of water vapor does not record any seasonal cyclicity. On the other hand, a strong diurnal cycle is visible, as well as a synoptic variability associated with cyclonic events. We then focus on the diurnal cycle. We show that it results from atmospheric boundary layer motions, with a marine vapor reaching the Observatory during the day, and air masses originating from the free troposphere reaching the Observatory during the night. During some nights, vapor is significantly more depleted in dO18 and dD. During the austral winter, this phenomenon is due to a modification of the regional atmospheric circulation causing a reinforcement of subsidences at Reunion Island, related to the position of the Subtropical Jet. During the austral summer, this phenomenon is sometimes due to an intensification of the subsidence at Reunion Island, and at other times to local or regional condensation processes. Finally, we focus on cyclonic events. During these periods, a strong isotopic depletion of the vapor is observed. We show that this depletion occurs 2 to 3 days before the system and continues until 3 days after. During this period, the evolution of the isotopic composition of the water vapor has a substructure. We note (1) an isotopic depletion that is a function of the distance to the center of the system, (2) an isotopic enrichment at the system wall, and (3) an abrupt evolutions of the isotopic composition of the water vapor in the rainbands due to mixing, condensation and/or recycling processes.

New insights into the current- and past hydrology of the north-western subtropical Pacific Ocean over the past 25 kyr, based on investigations of the Nd isotopic composition of seawater and deep-sea sediments from the northern South China Sea / Etude de l'hydrologie de la Mer de Chine du Sud depuis la dernière période glaciaire à partir de la composition isotopique du Nd analysé dans les foraminifères

Wu, Qiong 08 September 2014 (has links)
The aim of this study is to reconstruct the evolution of the hydrology of the western subtropical North Pacific Ocean by using εNd proxy analysed on foraminifera and dispersed authigenic ferromanganese oxide precipitates in sediments from deep-sea cores collected in the northern SCS. Before using the εNd proxy on deep sea sediments of the SCS, Nd of 16 seawater profiles collected in the northern South China Sea (SCS) and the Philippine Sea were investigated to establish the εNd distribution of water masses along the tropical western Pacific and the SCS that, until now have not been documented. εNd values for mid- and deep-water masses of the Philippine Sea and the SCS range from -2.7 to -4.4 and generally increase slightly with water depth. In the Philippine Sea, εNd values for the North Pacific Intermediate Water (NPIW) reach- 2.7±0.4 at mid-depths (500 to 1400 m). Below ~1800 m, the Pacific Deep Water (PDW) is characterized by less radiogenic Nd (-4.1±0.5) indicating the instrusion of southern sourced water masses. For most of the stations in the Northern SCS, water masses below 1500m (PDW) display homogenous εNd values (~ -4.1) similar to those of the PDW in the Philippine Sea. εNd values for the South China Sea Intermediate Water (SCSIW, 500-1500m) vary from -3.0 to -3.9 as a result of the vertical mixing of the NPIW with the PDW in the SCS. Seawater εNd values for the SCS (~5.3 to -7.0) display local modification in areas where the water lies above sediment drift deposit systems. This implies that “boundary exchange” with unradiogenic sediments (around~11) may occur temporally and spatially and does not modify he Nd isotopic composition of the PDW in the Northern SCS. In a second step, seawater εNd extracted from cleaned planktonic foraminifera G. ruber has been investigated on core MD05-2904, collected at a deph of 2000m on the north-western margin of the SCS. This study was undertaken in order to reconstruct hydrological variations since the LGM in the western subtropical North Pacific. The εNd records obtained from foraminifera spanning the past 25kyr. Display a wide range of values, ranging from -4±0.2 to -6.7±0.3, suggesting important changes in the contribution of the NPDW (εNd=-4) and the UCDW (εNd -6 to -8) in the subtropical western Pacific. During the period of deglaciation, εNd records indicate a relative decrease in the negative excursions of the εNd implying a higher proportion of SSW during the time intervals 17-15 cal kyr BP and 10-8 cal kyr BP; these intervals are coeval with the HS1 and early Holocene. The negative shifts centered on the HS1coincide with an enhanced upwelling in the Southern Ocean, associated with a polewards shift of the southern westerlies, inducing an enhanced formation of the SSW that propagates to the subtropical western Pacific. The negative excursion of the εNd during the Early Holocene (~10-8 cal kyr BP) indicates a higher relative proportion of SSW that could be associate with higher production of the SSW, as has been recently observed in the South Atlantic, and/or with a possible reduction of the NPIW. Our data suggest that the present modern circulation pattern in the western subtropical Pacific Ocean was fully established after 4.6 cal kyr BP.

The Quadrilátero Ferrífero is an important geotectonic unit of the São Francisco Craton that host iron and gold deposits within the vulcanosedimentary rocks of the greenstone belt Rio das Velhas. The geodynamic evolution of this greenstone includes several tectonometamorphic events. Gold deposits were formed by epithermal fluids, remobilized during the Proterozoic orogenic processes, are associated whit the banded iron formations and are sporadically disseminate in metapelitic rocks within the top of the greenstone sequence. In the ores is common the crystallization of iron sulfide minerals during diverse stages. Gold deposits have an important structural control by folds, reverse faults and strike-slip shearing zones, and are commons several hydrothermal alteration processes like sericitization, chloritization and carbonate usually related to the deformation. The Córrego do Sítio gold deposit is hosted in turbiditic siliciclastic rocks that are metamorphosed in the greenschist facies. The gold is associated with the iron sulfide arsenopyrite and pyrite, which are disseminated in metapelitic rocks and quartz-carbonate veins. The mineralization includes vary stages of crystallization, (1) pyrite and pyrrotite (2) arsenopyrite, pyrrotite and fine pyrite, (3) arsenopyrite whit pyrrotite and sulphosalts in quartz vein, and (4) pervasive pyrite. An integrated Pb, Sr e Nd, isotopic study of the Córrego do Sítio deposit allowed to identify that sources of the mineralizing fluids was the host rocks, that in the policiclic evolution the gold mineralizaton had participation events of metamorphism and hidrothermalism to age 2.2, 2.0 and 0.6 Ga. respectively the wich induced the hydrothermal circulation processes in the study area. The isotopic character of this deposit and its comparison with similar ones, suggest that the gold and its metals associated it is deposited in Córrego do Sítio to age 2.2 Ga. and that metals were derived from the banded iron formations, and remobilized by hidrothermal fluids across reverse faults. Although U-Pb (SHRIMP) and K-Ar geochronologic data were not conclusive to constrain the age of the mineralization, they provide to age ~2.7 Ga. that a good limit for the sedimentation of the host rock. It is suggest that there is a potential for gold prospection within the metapellitic rocks associated with banded iron formation of the Greenstone Rio das Velhas, and that the more relevant targets include areas with inverse and strike-slip fault.
