Trade, diplomacy and state formation in the early modern Mediterranean : Fakhr al-Dīn II, the Sublime Porte and the court of Tuscany

Olsaretti, Alessandro. January 2005 (has links)
This thesis explores the relations between the Druze emir Fakhr al-Din II Ma'n and three successive Medici Grand Dukes between 1605 and 1633. Eschewing traditional historiographical concerns with the origins of Lebanese nationalism and the cultural encounter between East and West, I have sought first and above all to locate relations between this powerful emir and the Court of Tuscany within the broader context of Mediterranean history. / I suggest that the actions of Fakhr al-Din and of the Medici Grand Dukes have to be understood in relation to broad, long-term trends in the economic and social history of the Mediterranean. I explore two of these trends in detail: the breakdown in commercial and diplomatic relations between Florence (and then Tuscany) and the Ottoman empire during the course of the sixteenth century; the bargaining between the Porte and provincial power-holders in the Syrian provinces in the century following the Ottoman conquest.

The teaching of history at the Habsburg Universities of Vienna, Graz and Innsbruck, compared to Padova and Pavia between 1848 and 1855 /

Halbwidl, Dieter Anton. January 1998 (has links)
This dissertation presents a comparative overview of the philosophical reforms in the study of history at the Universities of Vienna, Graz, Innsbruck, Padova and Pavia between 1848 and 1855. The study traces; the work of four German and four Italian historians, and highlights the establishment of the history seminar at the University of Vienna (1850). The founding of the Institute of Austrian History in Vienna (1854--1855), marked the beginning of a specialized study of history in the Habsburg Monarchy. / The philosophical reforms, launched in 1849 by Count Leopold Thun, were successfully implemented in Austria, but faced defiance in the Lombardy-Venetia, where universities were hotbeds of nationalism and insurgency. Nevertheless, the appointment of a Vienna-trained historian at the University of Padova (1855), and the founding of philological-historical seminars at the Universities of Pavia (1856) and Padova (1858), paved the way for the eventual professionalization of the study of history in Italy.

Reification and hegemony : the politics of culture in the writings of Georg Lukács and Antonio Gramsci, 1918-1938

Robinson, James. January 1983 (has links)
This study is a comparison of the development of the theories of reification and hegemony in the writings and political activities of Georg Lukacs and Antonio Gramsci during the years from 1918 to 1938. In demonstrating that reification and hegemony were formulated in response to the unsuccessful revolutionary movements in Hungary and Italy of 1919-1920, it becomes evident that the respective theories of Lukacs and Gramsci were meant to constitute critiques of bourgeois cultural domination. Thus, their problematic extends to analyses of more specific issues, such as the role of positivist science as the prevailing "paradigm of rationality" and the instrumental function of "traditional" and "organic intellectuals." The solutions that both theorists sought in order to overcome reification and hegemony are embedded in their neo-Hegelian interpretations of Marxism, where historical materialism is defined as a methodology characterised by its utilisation of the conceptual tools of "dialectic," "totality," and "absolute historicism." However, Lukacs was forced by historical circumstances to retreat into the realm of aesthetics, although he continued the critique of reification by way of his theory of critical realism. Simultaneously, Gramsci began to elaborate more practical solutions to cultural domination through his theory of the "war of position," catharsis, and counter-hegemony.

O empreendedorismo na ficção de José Clemente Pozenato : mito e expressão de regionalidade

Tonet, Charles 14 December 2017 (has links)
Submitted by cmquadros@ucs.br (cmquadros@ucs.br) on 2018-04-03T12:46:13Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Dissertacao Charle Tonet.pdf: 757594 bytes, checksum: fd81c3623870a0882735f6a6a1393c24 (MD5) / Made available in DSpace on 2018-04-03T12:46:13Z (GMT). Based on the analysis of the regional economic historiography and on its major business symbol, Abramo Eberle, the purpose is to identify the connections between this historical narrative and the fictional one in the Gardone family’s entrepreneurial trail, present in the immigration trilogy: A Cocanha, O Quatrilho and A Babilônia, by José Clemente Pozenato. Therefore, this project aims to discuss the entrepreneurship as a regionality manifestation, which examines the mythical speech based on Mircea Eliade’s concepts and to identify how the characters’ logic and its range of moral values represent the traditional principals of the entrepreneurial model.

Política e literatura nos Cadernos do Cárcere de Antonio Gramsci / Politics and literature in Antonio Gramsci¿s Prison Notebooks

Mussi, Daniela Xavier Haj, 1983- 18 August 2018 (has links)
Orientador: Alvaro Gabriel Bianchi Mendez / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Filosofia e Ciências Humanas / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-18T00:10:44Z (GMT). This thesis dealt with the relationship between politics and literature in the prison writings of Antonio Gramsci, especially the Prison Notebooks 21 and 23. For this, considered the restoration method proposed by the critical edition of the Prison Notebooks edited by Valentino Gerratana (1975). This work proposed to achieve its goals with two main categories, literary criticism and national-popular literature. The general hypothesis, or the starting point, of this research was that the relationship between literature and politics was part of a broader effort by Gramsci to survive the conditions of life in prison and to seek the development of the philosophy of praxis. With regard to literary criticism, the survey sought to establish a possible translation of the prison notes on the construction of the organic and modern intellectual, represented at the "return to De Sanctis", as a model of literary critic opposed to the figure of Benedetto Croce. Here, the contradiction between the literary and the political was taken as a starting point for understanding the birth of the modern intellectual as "political + expert". The research recovered also the national-popular moment in Gramsci, as a hub of the study of modern lifestyle and representative update on politics and literature of the historical experience of the formation of national states. The study of national-popular Italian literature was considered, in turn, in its fragility, the fragility of the Italian unification / Mestrado / Pensamento Político / Mestre em Ciência Política

A Tuscan Lawyer, His Farms and His Family: The Ledger of Andrea di Gherardo Casoli, 1387-1412

Grover, Sean Thomas 08 1900 (has links)
This is a study of a ledger written by Andrea di Gherardo Casoli between the years 1387 and 1412. Andrea was a lawyer in the Tuscan city of Arezzo, shortly after the city lost its sovereignty to the expanding Florentine state. While Andrea associated his identity with his legal practice, he engaged in many other, diverse enterprises, such as wine making, livestock commerce, and agricultural management. This thesis systematically examines each major facet of Andrea's life, with a detailed assessment of his involvement in rural commerce. Andrea's actions revolved around a central theme of maintaining and expanding the fortunes, both financial and social, of the Casoli family.
