The attitude determination and control systems (ADCS) task scheduler

Ntsimane, M. H. (Mpho Hendrick) 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScEng)--University of Stellenbosch, 2001. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A new task scheduler for the Attitude Determination and Control System (ADCS) of the Stellenbosch University Satellite (SUNSAT) has been designed and tested on a personal computer. This new scheduler is capable of uploading new control tasks, or changing existing control tasks, on an individual basis. This is an improvement on the current ADCS task scheduler, where the control tasks are hard-coded in the scheduler, requiring the entire software image of the scheduler to be uploaded if a new task is to be added, or an existing task is to be changed. The new scheduler was developed using the Java programming language. The Java ClassLoader class is used to dynamically load tasks to a linked list. The scheduler thread runs through this linked list and schedules all the tasks that have become schedulable. New tasks can be added to the list without stopping the scheduler. The new scheduler has been successfully implemented on a personal computer, laying a good foundation for implementation in an embedded environment based on processors such as the T800 Transputer of the ADCS or the 80386 processor of the secondary onboard computer (OBC2).

Java implementation of AX.25 link-layer protocol for future micro-satellites

Ramonyalioa, Thethe Tshepo 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScEng)--University of Stellenbosch, 2003. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis investigates the viability of implementing the AX.25 protocol in Java, for satellite applications. The AX.25 protocol forms part of the Communications subsystem of a micro-satellite. It describes the implementation of a standard packet-radio link-layer communication protocol in Java, for future use on satellite on-board computers, allowing amongst other things, a reliable communications platform. An investigation into factors that make AX.25 preferable over other communication protocols, as well as advantages of Java as a language used in the implementation, is made. The design of the implementation is described. Finally, efficiency of the Java implementation is evaluated and optimizations identified and recommended.

A detailed investigation of interoperability for web services

Wright, Madeleine January 2006 (has links)
The thesis presents a qualitative survey of web services' interoperability, offering a snapshot of development and trends at the end of 2005. It starts by examining the beginnings of web services in earlier distributed computing and middleware technologies, determining the distance from these approaches evident in current web-services architectures. It establishes a working definition of web services, examining the protocols that now seek to define it and the extent to which they contribute to its most crucial feature, interoperability. The thesis then considers the REST approach to web services as being in a class of its own, concluding that this approach to interoperable distributed computing is not only the simplest but also the most interoperable. It looks briefly at interoperability issues raised by technologies in the wider arena of Service Oriented Architecture. The chapter on protocols is complemented by a chapter that validates the qualitative findings by examining web services in practice. These have been implemented by a variety of toolkits and on different platforms. Included in the study is a preliminary examination of JAX-WS, the replacement for JAX-RPC, which is still under development. Although the main language of implementation is Java, the study includes services in C# and PHP and one implementation of a client using a Firefox extension. The study concludes that different forms of web service may co-exist with earlier middleware technologies. While remaining aware that there are still pitfalls that might yet derail the movement towards greater interoperability, the conclusion sounds an optimistic note that recent cooperation between different vendors may yet result in a solution that achieves interoperability through core web-service standards.

The problem in receiving non desired messages in electronic communication systems is a very hard task; even it has begun before the popularization of Internet. The problems that these kinds of messages can cause are among others: waste of time, waste of band width, productivity and data or delay in reading the real e-mails. Several e-mail automatic filtering techniques are presented in the literature, however many of them without capacity of adaptation, while the problem in real systems must be dynamical, i.e. avoid filtering techniques. This work develops a SPAM filtering using a pre processing technique available in the literature, where the e-mails are submitted to extract and select the characteristics; and a neural network based on the resonance adaptive theory to detect and classify the SPAMS. These neural networks have capacity in generalization and adaptation, important characteristics of good performance of SPAM filters. The proposed model is submitted to several tests to validate the efficiency of the filter.

The role of parallel computing in bioinformatics

Akhurst, Timothy John January 2005 (has links)
The need to intelligibly capture, manage and analyse the ever-increasing amount of publicly available genomic data is one of the challenges facing bioinformaticians today. Such analyses are in fact impractical using uniprocessor machines, which has led to an increasing reliance on clusters of commodity-priced computers. An existing network of cheap, commodity PCs was utilised as a single computational resource for parallel computing. The performance of the cluster was investigated using a whole genome-scanning program written in the Java programming language. The TSpaces framework, based on the Linda parallel programming model, was used to parallelise the application. Maximum speedup was achieved at between 30 and 50 processors, depending on the size of the genome being scanned. Together with this, the associated significant reductions in wall-clock time suggest that both parallel computing and Java have a significant role to play in the field of bioinformatics.
