The story of Presbyterianism begins, in general, with the story of Protestantism. Not many years after Luther's action in Wittenburg began a spiritual reformation, two men - Calvin and Knox- shared in the new form of Protestantism which was to come under the name of Presbyterianism. Largely by way of Scotland and England this denomination of Christianity moved into America early in the 17th century. When the United States government was formed officially in 1789, one man, John Witherspoon, was highly instrumental in the form adopted.

The objective of this study was to investigate fatty acid concentrations of homogenized and non-homogenized milk from Jersey and Holstein cows. Twenty-two, lactating Holstein (n=11) and Jersey (n=11) cows were fed the same ration with Calan® gates twice daily. Jerseys were fed 25kg DM and Holsteins were fed 30 kg DM. Feed offered was adjusted daily according to previous day orts amount. Body weight and measurements, blood, and ruminal samples were collected weekly as were feed and orts samples. Ruminal fluid was collected from six Holstein and six Jersey cows weekly (n=42). Milk weights were collected daily and samples were taken at 0300 and 1500 hours and pooled by week. There was no difference in fatty acid concentrations from milk of Holsteins compared to Jersey. There was a tendency (P < 0.08) for greater concentration of linolenate between breeds and of stearate between processes.

The purpose of this study is to examine the . relationship and effects of New Jersey College Basic Skills Placement Test (NJCBSPT) scores and grades in basic skills reading, elementary algebra, and English/ writing courses with the students' success in selected college-level general education courses in an attempt to establish predictor variables. In addition, the study examines the possibility that predictions of success in general education courses can be made more accurately by using multiple prediction variables. The population for the study consisted of seven years of successful basic skill course grades, New Jersey College Basic Skill Placement Test (NJCBSPT) scores and successful general education course grades for students at one small, rural community college. Coefficients of determination, correlation coefficients, t-tests, and linear and multiple regression were some of the analysis techniques used. / Ed. D.

The objective of this study was to determine the onset of puberty by using progesterone profiles and anterior pituitary gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) challenges in purebred and crossbred Holstein and Jersey heifers. In experiment 1, fifty prepubertal heifers by four sire - dam classifications (18 HH, 11 JJ, 10 JH, and 11 HJ) were used. The HH heifers attained puberty at an older age than the HJ, JH or JJ heifers, and these three classifications were not different from each other. There were significant differences in weight and wither height at puberty and average daily weight gain (ADWG) between all four sire - dam classifications. Season of birth had a significant effect on age and weight at puberty. In experiment 2, four prepubertal heifers from each sire - dam classification in experiment 1 were used at 3, 6, 9 and 12 mo of age to determine the effects of administering 200 μg GnRH on LH secretion. The effects of breed, age at challenge, and their interaction were only significant for time to LH peak. In conclusion, age at puberty in crossbred Holstein X Jersey heifers is regulated by breed and season of birth, and further research with larger sample sizes is needed to establish the relationship of pituitary maturation and the capacity to secrete LH in response to GnRH stimulation as related to onset of puberty in purebred and crossbred dairy heifers. / Master of Science

Thesis advisor: Noah Snyder / Salt marshes are an essential ecosystem for connecting nutrients between coastal and land environments, protecting shorelines from erosion, and providing habitat for various species. Anthropogenic climate change causing sea level rise poses threats to salt marshes and the coastal communities nearby. In southern New Jersey, the relative rate of sea level rise (4.21 ± 0.15 mm/yr from 1911-2022; SLR; NOAA, 2023) is greater than the global average (3.4 ± 0.04 mm/yr). In this study, I measure chronologies, bulk density and organic content (loss on ignition, LOI) from cores collected in 2021-22 at four locations in the Seven Mile Island Innovation Lab (SMIIL) in Stone Harbor, New Jersey to determine multidecadal accretion rates. Chronologies are developed from a radionuclide dating analysis (using concentrations of 210Pb, 241Am, 137Cs and 7Be) following procedures similar to Boyd et al. (2017) and Landis et al. (2016). The accretion rates from 1911-2022 of the four cores analyzed are 4.3 ± 0.2 mm/year, 4.1 ± 0.1 mm/year, 5.2 ± 0.1 mm/yr, and 6.0 ± 0.2 mm/yr, respectively, which are similar to the local SLR rate and are within error of RSLR in Atlantic City. The mean LOI for the 4 four cores is 27.2 ± 19.0%, 21.3 ± 8.9%, 20.2 ± 7.5% and 14.2 ± 13.0%. The mean dry bulk density for the 4 cores is 437 ± 127 kg/m3, 380 ± 103 kg/m3, 415 ± 88 kg/m3, 657 ± 353 kg/m3. The higher accretion rates of the salt marshes in SMIIL compared to relative sea level rise and consistency with the Sadler Effect indicates that the salt marsh vertical accretion rate is keeping up with increases in sea level rise. Thus, the salt marshes are not in immediate risk for inundation from sea level rise and supports the adaptability and resiliency of the salt marsh ecosystem. / Thesis (BS) — Boston College, 2024. / Submitted to: Boston College.
