Jointed timber column with glue or nails. / Träpelare sammansatt med lim- eller spikförband.

Aslan, Jiyan, Asp, Marcus January 2016 (has links)

Development Of Efficient Modeling Methodologies Of Adhesively Bonded Joints For Crash Simulations

Sureshrao, Malvade Indrajit 07 1900 (has links)
In this thesis, a new modeling methodology applicable to adhesively bonded joints for crash simulations is presented. Using this approach, adhesive joints can be modeled without using minute solid elements thus reducing the size of the model. Moreover, coarse mesh can be used for substrates in the overlap region of a joint. Both of these improvements together yield significant reduction in simulation run times in crash analysis when compared to solid element representation of adhesive. The modeling can also capture effects of strain rate for a given ambient temperature. In order to develop the efficient modeling procedure mentioned above, experimental, analytical and numerical studies have been carried out. Mechanical behaviors of adhesively bonded joints are studied with the help of double lap shear (DLS) coupon tests conducted at different extension rates and temperatures. The joint specimens are made from dual-phase (DP) steel coupons bonded with epoxy resin. Tests are also carried out to ascertain the behaviors of these component materials at different extension rates and temperatures. A new semi-analytical solution procedure is developed considering material nonlinearity to predict mechanical behaviors of adhesively bonded DLS joints. The joint behaviors using the semi-analytical approach are predicted separately using the Von Mises and exponent Drucker-Prager yield criteria. The predicted force versus extension curves using semi-analytical solution are compared with test results. It is also hypothesized here that, the semi-analytical solution procedure can be used as a base to develop efficient modeling procedures of adhesively bonded joints in FEA. In finite element analysis, both adhesive and substrates are modeled as elastic-plastic materials. It is shown that the shell-solid model of the DLS joint, in which substrates are modeled using shell elements and adhesive is modeled using solid elements, can accurately predict the mechanical behavior of the joint. Both exponent Drucker-Prager and Von Mises material models in ABAQUS are used to calculate force versus extension curves. Numerical and experimental forces versus extension curves are compared. A new methodology for efficient modeling of adhesively bonded joints in LS-DYNA using equivalent material properties in the joint overlap region is proposed. Various models using this methodology are assessed by comparing their results with shell-solid model and test results. Finally, it is also shown that strain rate effects can be included in the efficient modeling approach.

Performances des assemblages par tourillons soudés / Performance of the dowel welded wood furniture joints

Segovia-Brandt, César 15 September 2010 (has links)
A wood joint is a method which makes it possible to maintain together two parts according to the consumer’s requirements (esthetic, mechanic resistance, life cycle) and the wood industry politic. This work is framed in the structural solid wood welding by mechanic friction to use in joineries, cabinet makings or constructions. We will show the feasibility of the welding joint design obtained with rotary friction using a traditional drill press and an automatic welding machine, which allows us to find furnishing’s industry applications. This process, which has been studied only for some years (2001), has been discovered in a polymer contribution study in the adhesion of solid wood. It can be carried out by linear alternative frictions or by rotation of a cylindrical part (called dowel) in a drilling of smaller diameter. In both case, the rise of temperature generated by frictions produces the fusion and the mixture of the lignocellulosic matter, which makes it possible for the two pieces to be welded without any matter contribution but only with the fibers’ tangle. The objective of this work is the parallel and perpendicular fibers joints, the most used in the furnishing design, through three kinds of assembly: bevel, half-lap and the groove and tongue joint. About the parallel fibers joints, we made the comparison between the ones welded, the ones nailed and the last ones gluing. For the type T perpendicular joints, comparison has only been made between the welding and those of gluing ones. For the type L perpendicular welding, the study was carried out according to the procedure CTBA L-161 (2000) of French Standard NF P 20-501. Finally, about the panels, we showed the laminated-welded without adhesive joints performance

Effects of Curing Cycle and Loading Rates on the Bearing Stress of Double Shear Composite Joints

Andrejic, Mateja 01 April 2016 (has links)
In the last few decades, there has been a shift to using more lightweight materials for the potential of fuel consumption reduction. In the Aerospace Industry, conventional metal structures are being replaced by advanced composite structures. The major advantage of an advanced composite structure is the huge reduction in the number of parts and joints required. Also composite materials provide better resistance to creep, corrosion, and fatigue. However, one cannot eliminate all the joints and attachments in an aircraft’s structure. Eliminating structural joints is impractical in present-day aircraft because of the requirements for inspection, manufacturing breaks, assembly and equipment access, and replacement of damaged structures. Currently, composite joints are overdesigned which leads to weight penalties. Understanding how to optimize the ultimate bearing strength of a composite joint by altering the cure cycle might be beneficial to the composite joint design process. This study investigates, through numerical and experimental analysis, the mechanical behavior of double shear joints. The first task is to test Aluminum double shear joint specimens inside the double shear joint fixture at a loading rate of 0.05 in./min. (quasi-static). The second task is to numerically model and validate the aluminum double shear joint specimen. The third task is to test the Unidirectional MTM 49 carbon fiber pre-preg double shear composite joint specimens with two different cure cycles and five different loading rates (0.05 in./min., 0.1 in./min., 1 in./min., 2 in./min. and 6 in./min.). The double shear composite joint specimens are made, using a heat press, with a quasi-isotropic laminate orientation of [0 0 +45 -45 +45 -45 90 90]s. The first cure cycle used is called the alternate cure cycle, which is Cytec’s MTM 49 Unidirectional Carbon Fiber pre-preg material cure cycle, and the second cure cycle used is called the datasheet cure cycle, which is Umeco's MTM 49 Unidirectional Carbon Fiber pre-preg material cure cycle. The recommended datasheet cure cycle and an alternate cure cycle are both compared to see how they affect the mechanical characteristics of the matrix along with the bearing stress. The fourth task is to adjust the Aluminum double shear joint numerical model for the double shear composite joint specimen. The numerical results for both the Aluminum and the composite specimens are in agreement with the experimental results. The theoretical in-plane material properties of the quasi-isotropic laminate were in agreement with the experimental results. One can see that at 0.05 in./min. and 0.1 in./min. (for both cure cycles) the composite double shear specimens carried more load compared to the higher loading rates of 1 in./min., 2 in./min. and 6 in./min. The tensile modulus of elasticity of an Aluminum sample is measured using a crosshead displacement, a strain gage and an extensometer. The crosshead displacement yielded very inaccurate results when compared to the strain gage and the extensometer.

Progresivní styčníky FRP kompozitů konstrukcí dopravní infrastruktury / Joints from FRP composite intended for transport infrastructure

Simon, Pavel January 2018 (has links)
This thesis deals with junction points of construction used in transport infrastructure, which are made of FRP composite material. Main focus is on bonded joints. The material and geometrical criteria od FRP material and there influence to junctions are analyzed. In sequential steps the development of the design of joints applicable to reference constructions - pedestrian walkways is documented. There are also presented practical experiences from the tests of joints of overlapped and single-sided joints, as well as experience from the design, production and testing of two types of pedestrian bridges on a real scale. Furthermore, extensive comparison of joints, in particular T-joints with closed profiles for selected types of fasteners, is provided. From a simple connection, screws and rivets or plain bonding to combined joints. These are assessed both in terms of bearing capacity and their deformation behavior. These tests are performed for two material combinations, FRP-FRP and FRP-steel.
