The relationship between internal value drivers and shareholder value : JSE listed mining companies investigated / A. Gerber

Gerber, Anton January 2008 (has links)
The primary goal of a publicly traded company is to maximise the wealth of its shareholders. This implies that the management of the firm, as agents of the owners, has to manage the firm in such a manner as to create value from every decision taken. Value-based management (VBM) is a management strategy aimed at achieving shareholder wealth creation and is based on the effective management of a set of internal value drivers to maximise wealth creation. The primary objective of the current study is to investigate the quantification of the relationship between internal value drivers and shareholder wealth creation in the Mining sector of JSE listed companies in South Africa. In order to achieve this, the internal value drivers were identified from literature, the necessary financial data was collected and the value drivers as well as actual shareholder wealth were quantified. Revenue growth, operating profitability, capital requirements and weighted average cost of capital (WACC) were identified as the value drivers while total shareholder return (TSR) was identified as the actual shareholder wealth creator. For the purpose of the current study, WACC was excluded from the analysis. By application of linear regression, it was found that revenue growth and operating profitability have a positive, statistically significant effect of TSR. After analysing the effect size, it is however concluded that the effect is not practically significant. These findings concur with similar research in the field of VBM. / Thesis (M.B.A.)--North-West University, Vaal Triangle Campus, 2009.

Performance and JSE listing of selected South African hospital operators

Mokgatlhe, Kagiso Davis 03 March 2022 (has links)
The study investigates the relationship between the Johannesburg Stock Exchange Listing Status and performance of selected South African private Hospital Operators covering a 10- year period from 2008-2017. The selected proxies for the hospital performance measured were: Total Annual Revenue, Revenue per Bed per Day, Total Number of Hospital Beds, and EBITDA margin while controlling for Healthcare Inflation and Medically Insured Population, respectively. The specified regression equation was expanded to include simultaneous equations for the proxies of hospital performance. From this system of simultaneous equations, the study estimated the panel regression model using Seemingly Unrelated Regression (SUR). The findings showed that (1) JSE-listed Hospital Operators command higher Total Annual Revenues generated, superior Hospital Bed Numbers, and higher Revenue per Bed per Day compared to their unlisted peers, but their operating efficiency is not superior to that of their unlisted peers. In addition, the study found (2) a positive and statistically significant relationship between JSE Listing Status and Private Hospital Operator Performance for the performance proxies of Total Annual Revenue, Revenue per Bed per Day and Total Number of Hospital Beds, but a positive statistically insignificant relationship in respect of EBIDTA margin, the operating efficiency measure of performance; (3) a positive statistically significant relationship between Medically Insured Population and Private Hospital Operator Performance for the performance proxies of Total Annual Revenue, Revenue per Bed per Day, Total Number of Hospital Beds, but a positive statistically insignificant relationship in respect of the operating efficiency measure of performance; (4) a negative statistically insignificant relationship between Healthcare Inflation and Private Hospital Operator Performance for the performance proxies of Total Annual Revenue, Revenue per Bed per Day, Total Number of Hospital Beds, but a positive also statistically insignificant relationship in respect of the operating efficiency measure of performance. These results corroborate the theoretical predictions and are supported by previous studies. The study has important implications for public bourse listing as a strategic organisational consideration in terms of funding mobilisation for corporate performance and growth strategy. The sizeable macroeconomic contribution of the private hospital sector, and the importance of the medical insurance-private hospital performance nexus, behoves policy makers to ensure that the proposed universal health fund in South Africa must not totally crowd out the development of private health insurance.

An analysis of the relationship between the Chief Executive Officer's Gender and firm performance

Matsila, Siphiwa Lydia January 2016 (has links)
Thesis (MBA.) -- University of Limpopo, 2016 / This paper evaluated the relationship between the Chief Executive Officer’s gender and firm performance. This study was conducted by evaluating the differential effect of CEO’s gender and sales turnover, share price and net profit. The study was deemed necessary because related researches in South Africa did not address the relationship between gender and variables such as turnover, share price and net profit. Hence this research focuses on the evaluation of the differential effect between CEO's gender and the corporate turnover, share price and net profit. The methodological approach used in this study was the quantitative approach. Data were collected from the archives of Socially Responsible Investing Index companies in the JSE. The T-test of difference was applied for data analysis of sixteen (16) selected companies. Three specific objectives were examined as follows: (1) To evaluate the relationship between the CEO's gender and company turnover (2) To assess the relationship, the CEO's gender and share price (3) To examine the relationship between the CEO's gender and net profit. Findings from the statistical analysis revealed that there is no significant relationship between CEO gender and sales turnover. It was further identified that no relationship exists between CEO gender and share price. It was also discovered that there is no differential effect between CEO gender and net profit. Findings from statistical analysis revealed that P-Value was greater than 5 percent indicating that there was no significant relationship between CEO gender and sales turnover, share price and net profit. This means that within the companies examined, CEO gender had no influence on sales turnover, share price and net profit. Based on the findings above, women CEOs can perform as well as the men CEOs. Therefore, women should be afforded the CEO’s positions as their presence have no negative effect on firm performance. Key words: CEO gender, firm performance, sales turnover, share price, net profit, JSE listed companies, corporate profitability, shareholder value and gender stereotyping.

Assessment of corporate governance reporting in the annual reports of South African listed companies

Moloi, Steven Tankiso Mthokozisi 30 November 2008 (has links)
This dissertation reflects the results of a study during which the 2006 annual reports of the top-40 JSE listed companies, were assessed for their disclosure of the required corporate governance statements. Content analysis was used to identify the information. The results obtained indicate that the majority of the JSE's top-40 listed companies adhere to good corporate governance disclosure practices. However, there are areas in which the non-disclosure of information was prevalent. These include the disclosure of information on the selection of external auditors and whistle blowing. Future research, employing sources such as SENS announcements, press releases, trading updates, cautionary announcements and websites together with annual reports should be conducted. / Financial Accounting / M.Com.
