Performance evaluation and benchmarking of the JXTA peer-to-peer platform

Halepovic, Emir 24 August 2004 (has links)
Peer-to-peer (P2P) systems are a relatively new addition to the large area of distributed computer systems. The emphasis on sharing resources, self-organization and use of discovery mechanisms sets the P2P systems apart from other forms of distributed computing. <p> Project JXTA is the first P2P application development platform, consisting of standard protocols, programming tools and multi-language implementations. A JXTA peer network is a complex overlay, constructed on top of the physical network, with its own identification scheme and routing. <p> This thesis investigates the performance of JXTA using benchmarking. The presented work includes the development of the JXTA Performance Model and Benchmark Suite, as well as the collection and analysis of the performance results. By evaluating three major versions of the protocol implementations in a variety of configurations, the performance characteristics, limitations, bottlenecks and trade-offs are observed and discussed. <p> It is shown that the complexity of JXTA allows many factors to affect its performance and that several JXTA components exhibit unintuitive and unexpected behavior. However, the results also reveal the ways to maximize the performance of the deployed and newly designed systems. <p>The evolution of JXTA through several versions shows some notable improvements, especially in search and discovery models and added messaging components, which make JXTA a promising member of the future generation of computer systems.

JMED- Uma arquitetura PEER-TO-PEER para aplicaÃÃes em telemedicina / JMED-An architecture PEER-TO-PEER for applications in telemedicine

ClÃudio Pedrosa teles 23 June 2006 (has links)
In the last years Research and Development (R&D) in the area of computer systems and communication systems have started a technological revolution which has made it possible to conceive a number of new products, particularly embedded systems, from cell phones to medical equipments. The area which makes use of both technologies above is frequently known as Information Technology (IT). IT has boosted a number of research projects and has established as a research area in its own. Among the applications which have benefited from IT, Telemedicine is one that stands out. Telemedicine is the distribution of medical care, as well as medical knowledge cooperation at distance by using IT. Many solutions proposals to support Telemedicina if base on the architecture Client-Server. This architecture presents low Reliability for the fact to count on a central element (Server) to provide the requested services. It is clearly that redundancy can be incorporated in server level, but to the high price to have itself that to guarantee the consistency of the talked back servers. In this dissertation we propose a communication architecture based on peer-to-peer (P2P) computing, that it decides the problem of the architecture Client-Server. The importance is argued of if to use this technology in offers in the distance of services of specialized medical assistance, considering a direct style of contribution between doctors, from the interconnection between computational equipment. The proposed system, named JMED, was developed using programming platform for distributed P2P computing known as JXTA. JMED was implemented and we showed that is can be used in Telemedicine application by designing an application known as âsecond opinionâ, where computers and cell phones were used as communication stations.

Agent Extensions for Peer-to-Peer Networks.

Valiveti, Kalyan 12 1900 (has links)
Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networks have seen tremendous growth in development and usage in recent times. This attention has brought many developments as well as new challenges to these networks. We will show that agent extensions to P2P networks offer solutions to many problems faced by P2P networks. In this research, an attempt is made to bring together JXTA P2P infrastructure and Jinni, a Prolog based agent engine to form an agent based P2P network. On top of the JXTA, we define simple Java API providing P2P services for agent programming constructs. Jinni is deployed on this JXTA network using an automated code update mechanism. Experiments are conducted on this Jinni/JXTA platform to implement a simple agent communication and data exchange protocol.

The Study of Dynamic Team Formation in Peer-to-Peer Networks

Chiang, Chi-hsun 27 July 2004 (has links)
Most of virtual communities are built on the client/server system. There are some limitations on the client/server system such as the maintenance cost and the personal attribute protection. The peer-to-peer system has some strengths to overcome the limitations of client/server system. Therefore, we are willing to export the virtual community on the peer-to-peer system. There are two main team formation approaches in the current virtual community collaboration. Either one of these approaches alone has its limitations. In this study, we adopt the social network concept to design a team formation mechanism in order to overcome the limitations of current approaches. Besides, because of the natural of peer-to-peer system, the exchange of messages is sending and receiving on the network. The mechanism proposed in this research can also reduce the traffic cost of the team formation process. Furthermore, it maintains the fitness of members who are chosen in the same team.

Formal specification and verification of peer-to-peer network protocols.

Konga, Yannick Lokombo Kala. January 2011 (has links)
M. Tech. Electrical Engineering. / This research presented an integrated formal model of the JXTA protocol suite. The integrated model is constructed from the individual models describing the behaviours of protocols entities. Written in the PROMELA specification language, the finite state automata of these models are shown instead. The SPIN-based formal verification revealed that this studys integrated model was too large to perform for the computational resources available. This was in spite of the application of multiple complexity reduction techniques. Subsequently, as final recourse, the research resorted to the formal verification of individual protocols by making further abstraction of the interaction and dependencies between protocols. A number of errors were found including an invalid end state in the routing protocols and multiple non-progress cycles.

Deploying And Invoking Secure Web Services Over Jxta Framework

Gorgun, Ilhami 01 June 2005 (has links) (PDF)
Web services introduce a new paradigm for distributed computing, and the technology that it introduces constructs a new type of Web application. Web services can be described as any software that makes its discovery and invocation available over the Internet, and uses a standardized XML messaging system. The term peer-to-peer refers to a class of decentralized systems enabling the access of shared resources available on peers that are acting both as client and as server. In this work, a peer-to-peer approach is used to expoit Web service technologies by providing Web service security for JXTA peer-to-peer networks. JXTA is a network programming environment that has particularly been designed for the peer-to-peer platform. In order to achieve the goal of secure Web services, the specifications &ldquo / WSSecurity&rdquo / , &ldquo / XML Key Management Specification&rdquo / , &ldquo / WS-Trust&rdquo / and &ldquo / WSSecurityPolicy&rdquo / are exploited. &ldquo / WS-Security&rdquo / is primarily a specification for an XML-based security metadata container, and is a building block for the specifications &ldquo / WS-Trust&rdquo / and &ldquo / WS-SecurityPolicy&rdquo / . &ldquo / WS-Trust&rdquo / defines the process of how to acquire security tokens. Within the peer-to-peer network that is proposed with this work, a peer is dedicated to act as a &ldquo / trusted third party&rdquo / and to manage the processes for incorporating the security of public-key infrastructure, which is defined by &ldquo / XML Key Management Specification&rdquo / . In addition, the same peer is dedicated to manage to acquire security tokens, which is defined by &ldquo / WS-Trust&rdquo / . As for &ldquo / WS-SecurityPolicy&rdquo / , Web service invoking peers conform to this specification that specifies how to define security assertions stating Web service provider&rsquo / s preferences and requirements. This work realizes and achieves the necessity of bringing together the technologies mentioned above in order to propose an architecture of secure SOAP messaging for Web service invocation in peer-to-peer environment that is provided by the JXTA framework. The work presented in this thesis is realized as a part of the SATINE project funded by the European Commission.

Vilanova, Felipe Jung January 2006 (has links)
With the increasing number and diversity of components of the computer networks, comes the necessity to find a consistent way to manage modern networks. This is required in order to keep all network infrastructures working in a proper and smooth way, while taking care of to the network users’ necessities and filling the network administrators’ expectations. In general aspects, the centralized management approaches are inadequate for the management of networks with a great number of nodes or great diversity of devices. The necessity of a distributed management thus becomes evident. In such distributed management, a group of administrators manages a single network in a cooperative fashion, each administrator being responsible for a segment of the managed network but at the same time being able to inspect other remote segments in order to solve non-overlapping problems. That is the motivation for having management systems with proper cooperative management support that allows interactions among administrators independent of time and location. Such a system will determine how administrators will communicate to delegate responsibilities, share information, and use the available tools. In this context, this dissertation presents the proposal of a distributed and cooperative management environment based on P2P technology. This environment offers four services: sharing of device configuration files, sharing of registered devices, configuration of devices, and bandwidth reservation. Based on the proposed environment, a Java application, using the JXTA development platform, has been implemented. This application allowed us to test and confirm the possibility of using P2P technologies for network management. In addition, the performance of the implemented solution has been measured considering the generated management traffic and response time. The results from the evaluation tests had proven the possibility of the use of P2P systems to facilitate the cooperative network management and had been sufficiently satisfactory in relation to the evaluated parameters.
