Model vir die implementering van streshanteringsprogramme deur maatskaplike werkers / A model for the implementation of stress management programmes by social workersSteyn, Pieter V. 11 1900 (has links)
The goals of this study were formulated in response to the question of whether the client system to whom the social worker directs help, experiences stress and to the question of how the client can be assisted in this regard by the social worker. The aims of the study were to ( 1) create a theoretical stress model for social work, (2) describe the stress phenomenon in a selected client system, (3) create a practice model for the implementation of stress management programmes by social workers and (4) execute the trial implementation and trial evaluation of
the proposed model. The study was undertaken within the framework of the developmental research and utilization model. A research design which was chiefly descriptive, was used and qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection were applied. A stress model. which can be utilized by social workers to describe and explain stress within client systems was created. This model is based on the model of ecological congruence and is compatible with the ecological systems approach in social work. In the empirical investigation
of the prevalence of stress in the client system, it was found that clients not only experience more stress than non-clients, but also that clients are in need of help in managing their stress. To enable social workers to help clients purposefully in the management of stress, a practice model, based on the model of stress inoculation training, was developed. This model for the implementation of stress management programmes is consistent with social work values and the helping process in social work. Although the findings of the trial investigation cannot be
generalised, it was concluded that the model could enable social workers to help client systems with stress related problems. It is recommended that the model be subjected to more extensive evaluation. / Social Work / Ph. D. (Maatskaplike Werk)

The development of a stress management model for staff at the National Health Laboratory Services (NHLS)Gxoyiya, Nandipha Tinny January 2004 (has links)
The research problem addressed in this study, was to identify strategies that could be employed to reduce stress related problems in the workplace. As the business environment is increasingly subjected to fast changing forces which include increased competition, the pressure for quality and advanced technology, innovation, and an increase in the pace of doing business, the demands on employees have grown equally dramatically. It is therefore essential to develop strategies for managing stress to give employees the required additional energy to handle particularly difficult and stressful work situations. It is important that organisations provide the assistance and support on the issue of stress as part of their proactive approach to managing employee health and safety, by drawing up contingency plans, and to have the necessary infrastructure to deal with such problems. This study investigates the strategies that can be implemented in organisations to reduce stressful situations affecting employees. The information gleaned from the literature and empirical studies enabled the development of a model for stress management in the workplace.

The stressor - outcome and moderator relationships amongst South African managersChanoch, Debra, Lynne January 1998 (has links)
A dissertation submitted to the school of psychology, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of master of arts (industrial psychology), by coursework. / Despite the potentially devastating effect that stress may have on the performance and
productivity of the workforce (Greenblo,1992), few South African companies have
thoroughly looked at and studied the various aspects of stress. By doing this, they should
then be able to develop and implement effective stress reduction programmes,
The aim of the present study, therefore, was to identify some of the causes, outcomes, and
moderators of stress, which could then be used as the basis for developing stress
reduction programmes. Some stressor-outcome relationships (such as job satisfaction,
self-esteem, propensity to leave the organisation, and health) were looked at, after which
the possible moderating effect of certain variables (gender, personality, coping style, job
pressure, and organisational support) were considered.
The study adopted a cross-sectional design and the data was collected using both
quantitative and qualitative means. The sample consisted of 290 managers all of whom
belong to one of the country's largest financial institutions, and work in one of'the
various branches in and around the Gauteng region. Correlations, t-tests, anovas and a
content analysis were used to evaluate the stressor-outcome relationships. In addition to
these statistical analyses, moderated multiple linear regressions were conducted in order
to test for any moderating variables.
Overall, most of the stressor-outcome relationships were found to be significant, but the
number of actual moderating variables was shown to be rather minimal. Inaddition. the
information which was derived from the content analysis served to add some insight into
the sometimes contradictory findings, An in-depth look at the findings of the present
study can be found in the discussion section, where possible reasons and explanation for
the result- are presented. Theoretical and practical implications of the study, together With
the limitations, are offered. Following this, some important guidelines and suggestions
for future research are considered. / AC2017

The experience and perceptions of nurses working in a public hospital, regarding the services they offer to patients.Segnon, Ntando 16 July 2014 (has links)
Nurses comprise the majority of health care service providers and function as an integral part of the services rendered by the health care system in South Africa. There are however, frequent expressions of concern about their working conditions and circumstances. The health care system in South Africa faces difficulties in terms of resources and service provision, with nurses themselves sometimes being criticised for rendering less than adequate services (Khoza, Du Toit & Roos, 2010). Healthcare sector strikes have also been a feature of recent times, influenced by poor salaries, deterioration of academic facilities, poor working conditions in the public sector and the unfortunate conditions facing patients at public health facilities (Dhai, Etheredge, Voster & Veriava, 2011).
The nursing care-relationship, however, requires qualities of empathy, compassion, ethical practice and commitment and these demands and contradictions may lead to burnout, compassion fatigue and secondary trauma (Holdt, 2006). The study therefore explored the perceptions of nurses about their role, the quality of the health care services which they provide, their perceptions on nurse/patient relationships; and their perceptions of both problems and strengths or protective factors in their nursing role. Using a qualitative approach, the study included twenty nurses working in a large public hospital in Gauteng. Purposive sampling was used to select participants from various wards.
Data was collected through semi-structured, face-to-face interviews, in order to enable participants to reflect on the meanings of their experiences and the perceptions they attach to these experiences. Thematic content analysis was used to analyze data. The main findings were that nurses perceive their occupational stress arising from shortage of staff and limited and inadequate equipment. This resulted in fatigue, and a high rate of absenteeism. Nurses in this hospital reported that they experience trauma due to the nature of their work with little visible and accessible formal debriefings, trauma counseling and Employee Wellness Programmes in place to assist them with stress management for traumatic experiences and other work related problems. Working conditions are perceived as unfavorable and unsafe,
exposing them to health hazards, while simultaneously having to deal with frustrated patients and relatives.

Evaluation of the continuous stress intervention programme on trauma symptoms and coping responses.Ebrahim, Tasmeen. January 2004 (has links)
The present study evaluated the effect of the Continuous Stress Intervention Programme (CSIP) on trauma symptoms and coping strategies. The programme was implemented with a group of police officers from a specialised unit who daily experience extremely difficult and at times traumatic work conditions. Data was gathered before and after the implementation of the CSIP. A quasi - experimental design approach was adopted with a control group who had no intervention and an intervention- experimental group, who participated in the programme. Data was gathered from questionnaires with instruments that measured trauma symptomatology and coping strategies, both in the pre- and post -intervention periods. The control group consisted of eight police officers, while the experimental group consisted of 24 police officers. Data was analysed using a frequency count of scores, and a mixed between-within analysis of variance, using the SPSS (Version 11) statistical computer package. The results of the study showed that the Continuous Stress Intervention programme did not have a significant effect between the experimental and control groups, on trauma symptoms, but the trauma symptoms of the experimental group decreased from the pre- assessment to the post -assessment at a greater rate. In addition, in terms of the coping responses, the results of the study were significant for only one of the sub - scales, between the experimental and control groups, while there was an increase in positive coping strategies for the experimental group. The results were discussed in terms of epidemiological studies conducted previously in the area of trauma research. Recommendations were made pertaining to the inclusion of support mechanisms for the spouses of police officers, as well as the inclusion of coping strategies to deal with specific organisational problems within the programme. / Thesis (M.A.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2004.
