<p>Överingress</p><p>För hundra år sedan drevs ett familjenära jordbruk i Sverige. I takt med stigande konkurrens har många gårdar tvingats till valet att lägga ner eller öka sin produktion. De småskaliga jordbruk som för tankarna till Astrid Lindgrens böcker om Emil i Lönneberga och Alla vi barn i Bullerbyn finns knappt kvar längre.</p><p>Idag producerar Europas bönder mer mat än vi någonsin behöver. EU:s jordbruksstöd kostar mycket pengar, och leder till en överproduktion samt en snedvriden konkurrens. Och bland riksdagspartierna råder en bred enighet om att avreglera många av EU:s jordbruksstöd och ändra deras inriktning.</p><p>Denna artikelserie belyser en ny produktion inom jordbruket. Bönderna ska få betalt för att producera öppna landskap, bevara en biologisk mångfald och sköta om vårt kulturarv på landsbygden. Frågan är: Vad ska vi använda framtidens jordbruk till?</p>

Design of an Energy-saving Hydrocyclone for Wheat Starch Separation

The nearly unlimited applications and uses of starch for food industry make this natural polymer a unique component; no other constituent can provide consistence and storage stability to such a large variety of foods. Starch can be extracted from agricultural produce through either chemical processes or physical separation. The latter involves the application of centrifugal forces by means of hydrocyclones. A hydrocylcone is a device which separates, through physical methods, two phases of different densities. There are three flows involved: the feed (mixture introduced in the hydrocyclone), the overflow (the least dense part) and the underflow (the densest part). Normally, the underflow part, or commonly known as "heavies", is the desirable part that companies keep, this is, the starch. Despite hydrocyclones are not very expensive devices, current-based hydrocyclones demand high energy rates. This work describes the design and testing of energy-saving hydrocyclones for extracting starch from wheat. Eight prototypes were built and tested at Larsson Mekaniska Verkstad AB (Bromölla, Sweden). This company makes process equipment for the starch industry and was the one with which the author collaborated during the ellaboration of the Degree Project. Six of the eight hydrocyclones were built by Larsson; another was a commercial hydrocyclone and the last one was the one figured out after reading some literature and updates in the hydrocyclones field. The experiments consist of trying the eight hydrocyclones under different conditions, combining concentrations (153 g/L and 237 g/L) and pressures (500 Pa and 700 Pa). The experimental results proved the importance of geometry on hydrocyclone design, and showed the effect of geometrical parameters on the energy-saving properties of cyclones. Four of the eight new models behaved satisfactorily for low energy and high efficiency conditions, obtained with inlet pressures of 500 kPa and starch concentrations of 237 g/L.

<p>Eutrophication was recognized in the early 1900's and results in severe algal blooms, increased biomass production and eventually leads to an altered ecosystem. In Mälardalen we find the most eutrophic lakes. Most of the applied phosphorus and nitrogen into seas and oceans comes from agriculture, and the nutrients losses are affected by local weather conditions and soil type. Guidelines for storage and distribution of manure were introduced in the 80s, and the rules were strengthened January 1, 2010. Localities and previous county administrations can whether there are special reasons, grant an exemption for manure application during winter-periods despite the current ban.</p><p>In this essay I have examined how many exemptions of manure application that has been granted at the Sagån river, and what implications it has for the eutrophication of Lake Mälaren. Sagån’s catchment area extends through Enköping, Sala, Heby, Västerås and Uppsala. Since 2000, 23 waivers of manure application have been granted, most of these deviations have occurred on snow-covered ground or when the weather change considerably. This means that much of the nutriment in the manure went down to the nearby water when the snow melted. Computations were made In order to find out how much phosphorus was spread each time. The conclusion is that the pig manure contains significantly more phosphorus, meaning greater phosphorus losses. However, these calculations are only estimates.</p><p>Several farmers were contacted to find out what they think about the regulation of the management and application of manure. They believe that the new legislation does not pose a problem for them. But farmers with small distribution areas in relation to the number of animals could have some problems.</p>

Recycling Filter Substrates used for Phosphorus Removal from Wastewater as Soil Amendments

This thesis studied the viability of recycling filter substrates as soil amendments after being used in on-site systems for phosphorus (P) removal from wastewater. Focus was put on the materials Filtra P and Polonite, which are commercial products used in compact filters in Sweden. A prerequisite for this choice was to review filter materials and P sorption capacity. The filter substrates (Filtra P, Polonite and wollastonite tailings) were recycled from laboratory infiltration columns as soil amendments to a neutral agricultural soil and to an acid meadow soil to study their impacts on soil properties and yield of barley and ryegrass. The amendments tended to improve the yield and showed a liming effect, significantly increasing soil pH and the availability of P. In another experiment, samples of Filtra P and Polonite were equilibrated in batch experiments with the two soils in order to study the P dynamics in the soil-substrate system.  Batch equilibrations confirmed the liming potential of Filtra P and Polonite and showed that improved P availability in soils was strongly dependent on substrate P concentration, phase of sorbed P, and soil type. Finally, samples of Polonite used for household wastewater treatment were recycled as soil amendments to a mountain meadow and to an agricultural field for wheat cropping. The liming effect of Polonite was confirmed under field conditions and the results were similar to those of lime for the mountain meadow soil. However, the results were quite different for the agricultural field, where Polonite did not affect soil pH or any other chemical and physical soil properties investigated and had no impact on wheat yield and quality. The results from field experiments suggested that Polonite can be safely recycled to meadows and cropping fields at rates of 5-10 ton ha-1 but long-term studies are needed to forecast the effects of accumulation. / QC 20100708
