A Recording, Performance Guide, and Composer Interviews: Six New Original Works for Trios Involving Saxophone, Commissioned for the Rogue Trio and LotusJanuary 2018 (has links)
abstract: This project includes a recording, composer biographies, performance guides, and composer questionnaires for seven original works commissioned for either the Rogue Trio or Lotus. The members of the Rogue Trio are violinist Kathleen Strahm, saxophonist Justin Rollefson, and pianist Mary Cota. Lotus’s members include Samuel Detweiler, Justin Rollefson, and Kristen Zelenak on saxophone. Both ensembles are based in Tempe, Arizona. All seven original compositions were recorded at Tempest Recording in February of 2018.
The first piece, Four Impersonations (2016), was commissioned by the Rogue Trio and written by Theo Chandler (b.1992) for violin, soprano saxophone and piano. The second piece was written by Spencer Arias (b. 1990) titled He Said There Was No Sound (2015) for violin, alto saxophone, and piano. The final work is titled Cabinet Meeting (2017), composed by Zachary Green (b. 1993) for violin, alto and tenor saxophone, and piano.
The first piece commissioned by Lotus and composed by Spencer Arias is titled As I escape, the water calms (2017) for soprano saxophone, alto saxophone, and tenor saxophone. The second piece was composed by Graham Cohen (b. 1999), titled Introduction and Toccata (2017), written for soprano, alto, and baritone saxophones. The third piece, titled Everything that rises, was written by David “Clay” Mettens (b. 1990) in 2014 for three soprano saxophones. Samuel Detweiler, Justin Rollefson and Tyler Flowers originally commissioned this piece. In the commercial construction industry, the problem of price volatility as it pertains to materials and labor is a consistent problem. The changing instability of market conditions presents a challenge for construction companies to accurately estimate and complete projects within budget. This volatility can lead to higher costs and more risk to suppliers, contractors, and owners which can cause financial distress for all parties involved in the construction process. As lump sum contracts are typically being used on many projects, the owners seem to have the upper hand and are forcing contractors to honor lump sum contracts even when prices increase significantly. Owners are also using their position to reap the benefits of price decreases by basing future work relationships with the contractor as an incentive to pass on any savings of price decreases. Volatility in construction will continue to be a risk that participants in the construction industry in Utah will face. Commercial construction projects will continue to be built as the population increases and as more buildings are needed to service other industries. Price volatility can be economically dangerous when price changes affect the assumptions on which the contract is based. While there is no proven method to remove the risk of price volatility, methods have been developed to control the risk participants are exposed to in various contracting methods. Contractors, owners, and suppliers need to coordinate with each other and use best practices that will distribute the risk to the party that has the capability to handle the risk.

Tourniquet Mirage, a piece for orchestra and processed sound, is based on the recitation of a poem of the same name. Recitations are recorded and altered electronically through granulation and phase vocoding. Granular synthesis cuts audio up into "short sound grains" and combines them into a sequence of grains to form a longer final output. Phase vocoding uses Fourier analysis to analyze audio and represent it as a series of amplitudes, phases, and frequencies. The phase vocoder then uses this information to manipulate the audio without altering the overall structure of the waveform. / The processed sound part is closely linked to the music in the orchestra. This is as a result of developing the pitch-material of the orchestra by spectrally analyzing the processed audio. At certain times, the relationship between the electronics part and the sound of the orchestra is blurred. To accomplish this, the related formal sections of the orchestra are situated in a canonic relationship with respect to the processed-sound part. The thesis is in two parts: an analysis and an orchestral score.

In this essay Sarah Coakley’s, Margaret Melin’s and Wilfred Stinissen’s texts on the use of prayer are analyzed with the help of Justin Barret’s theory of theological correctness and DZ Philips’ ideas on prayer. The essay is focused on finding out how useful they are to the study of prayer in practice. Parallels are also drawn between theological correctness and political correctness. The analyses show that Barret’s theories are useful, but not in the way formulated by him. Examination of the theologians’ writings in this essay shows that Barret’s theory is too narrow concerning how theologically correct thought develops. The theologians all had different theories on achieving a paradigmatic prayer, but not correctly from a theological point of view according to Barret. It seems that the social context plays a greater part in how theologians reach prayer in a manner that is correct to them, than the manner in which Barret formulates context in his theory. If cognitive context is interpreted in a wider concept, his theory becomes more easily applicable. DZ Phillip’s ideas about prayer is also useful to relate to the theologians’ texts, as they all assume that prayer is total dedication to God. But the theologians realize the challenges of prayer differently from the way that Philips does. The parallel between theological and political correctness raises discussion, as all the theologians, consciously or unconsciously, indicate norms for prayer that in a religious context can be interpreted as “politically incorrect” and represent norms for correctness that should be regarded critically.

This paper deals with the journalistic work and the single novel of Justin Steinfeld (1886 Kiel - 1970 Baldock), who fled in 1933 from Hamburg to Czechoslovakia. This work focuses on his articles, which he wrote during his Prague exile (1933-1939) for the German speaking magazine Die Wahrheit and on his only novel Ein Mann liest Zeitung (1984, 2020) which tells the story of an exile who, like Steinfeld fled from Hamburg to Prague from the Nazis. The first part of the thesis introduces Czechoslovakia as an exile country for refugees from Germany in the 1930s and cultural activities of the exiles are shortly commented on, especially in relation to leftist and anti-fascist circles. This is followed by a short portrait of Justin Steinfeld. The main part of this work consists of chapters about the work of Steinfeld. First, his articles for Die Wahrheit are analysed. The attempt is made to characterize his journalistic writing, to find and describe the thematic focuses of his articles. The next chapter is devoted to the novel Ein Mann liest Zeitung and describes how the subject of exile is presented in it. The concept of exile is understood in different ways - firstly as a (geographical and social) space, secondly as a social status and thirdly as a psychological status.
