"In Search of Deer": A historical ecological perspective on caribou in northern Manitoba in the context of Cree use

Hebert, Laura Caroline 06 April 2015 (has links)
Caribou have a longstanding cultural and environmental role, and have interacted with human groups across time. This thesis is a consideration of these interactions, exploring prehistoric and historic patterns of caribou usage by Cree people in northern Manitoba. Through zooarchaeological analysis, an ethnohistorical review, and community workshops and interviews with York Factory First Nation, the relationship between caribou populations and Cree use is illustrated, providing insight into abundance, movements, and the socio-cultural value of caribou over time. In doing so, context is provided for the present-day situation: connections between historical and modern herds are drawn, population and migration changes are highlighted, and the impact of hunting pressures, climatic variation, habitat changes, and food availability on caribou populations are contemplated. Caribou have long been central to the seasonal economy in northern Manitoba, and the use of these animals reflects their abundance and value.

Vėlyvojo Nemuno apledėjimo keiminių terasų morfogenezė ir jų erdvinė sklaida / The morphogenesis and spatial spread of the kame terraces of the Late Nemunas Glaciation

Karmazienė, Danguolė 19 May 2014 (has links)
Kame terraces in the territory of Lithuania are found in the Late Nemunas glaciation Baltija stage relief. Investigation of the distribution, morphology, composition, origin and position of kame terraces in the Late Nemunas glaciation area is the main objective of the present study. The previous publications merely contained statements about the geomorphological position of kame terraces and descriptions of morphological features of terraces. The research was carried out by cartographic method. Kame terraces are isolated glacier marginal formations deposited between the landforms that formed in supraglacial and terminoglacial environments. The ice slope of a decaying glacier only represented one of the boundaries of sedimentation space. The structure of terraces was directly affected by the forming factors. According to the forming factors, kame terraces are classified as glaciofluvial, glaciolacustrine and mixed aquaglacial. The presented classification is based on the studies of morphology, morphometry and structure of kame terraces in the territory of Lithuania. The conducted study has a fundamental value since the established morphogenesis, structure and palaeogeographical conditions of formation of different types of kame terraces, created by the decaying Late Nemunas glacier, can be used for solution of the formation issues of similar forms in other regions. The dissertation is comprised of 167 pages, 88 illustrations and one table. The list of references has 173... [to full text]

Metal mobility and transport from an oil-shale mine, Lake Nõmmejärv, Estonia

Ekelund, Åsa January 2020 (has links)
Mining activities have a large impact on the environment, for example by the release of heavy metals from acid mine drainage and erosion of mine waste. North-eastern Estonia has the largest commercially exploited oil-shale deposit in the world. Waste from the mining processes have led to contamination of groundwater and streams polluted by phenols, oil products, sulphates and heavy metals. This thesis concerns the metal mobility from oil-shale mines in north-eastern Estonia, through water flow in the drainage system directed into Lake Nõmmejärv, which acts as a sedimentation basin for the mining water. A sediment core along with lake bottom surface samples were retrieved and analysed for heavy metals associated with mining. Water samples were collected and analysed for TOC. The sedimentary records show distinctively the change with the high inflow of water. The analysis of heavy metal content does not suggest a high impact on the environment, possibly because of a buffering effect by the limestone bedrock. The contents of heavy metals are somewhat elevated compared to background contents in Swedish lake sediments, but only cadmium and nickel levels are in the range that can be hazardous for the survival of organisms.

Selling Utopia: marketing the art of the women of Utopia / Marketing the art of the women of Utopia

McDonald, Michelle January 1999 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--Macquarie University, Institute of Early Childhood. / Includes bibliographical references. / Introduction -- Literature review -- A brief history of Utopia's art production; its place in the indigenous art movement -- The role of the wholesaler -- The retail sector -- Report on survey of the buyers of indigenous art -- Emily Kame Kngwarreye -- Authenticity -- Conclusion. / Summary: The thesis focuses on marketing art from the Aboriginal community, Utopia, where the majority of artists, and the best known artists, are women. It documents methods by which the art moves from the community to retail art outlets; it includes detailed documentation of marketing in the retail sector and also includes research into the buying of indigenous art by private buyers. -- Emily Kame Kngwarreye is the best known of the Utopia painters. The study proposes reasons for her success and points to further questions beyond the scope of this study. Problems inherent in criticism and editing of her work are raised and interpreted in the context of the marketplace. -- The original thesis plan did not include detailed discussion about authorship. However, in 1997 the media reported controversy about authorship of a prize-winning work. As such controversy must affect marketing, this topic (as it relates to this artist), was included. -- Although possibilities for improvement in marketing methods have become apparent as a result of this research, areas where further research would be beneficial have also become apparent. / Mode of access: World Wide Web. / 265, [48] p
