Uppsatsen syftar till att undersöka Kina slott som det fungerade under sin uppkomst och hur det fungerar som kulturarv idag, med fokus på vilken blick tillbaka på 1700-talet som Kina slott idag aktiverar. Slottets användning under 1700-talet och de ideal som ledde fram till dess tillkomst, ställs emot de ideal som förmedlas i dagens iscensättning av Kina slott. Min metod är en fältstudie, där både slottet i sig exteriört och dess bruk som kulturarv idag undersöks. Som teoretisk utgångspunkt används en modell där historiebruk beskrivs utifrån sitt förhållande till dels historiska fakta, dels hur pass besökaren tilltalas som samhällsmedborgare eller som individ. Text- och bildanalys av skyltar och av presentationsmaterial av Kina slott på webb och i tryckt material utförs, med inriktning på avsändarna Kungahuset och Stockholms officiella turistbyrå. Slottet i sin kontext i parken studeras också. Uppsatsen är disponerad i två kapitel där det första undersöker Kina slott i sin historiska kontext och i förhållande till liknande anläggningar i Europa, och det andra analyserar dagens bruk och presentationsmaterial om slottet. Resultaten visar att tillkomsten av Kina slott var driven av önskan att närma sig en internationell hovkultur. Samtidigt som Kina slott tillkom i en uppenbart internationell kontext med ett lekfullt bruk av kinesisk kultur, presenteras det idag av kungahuset ur ett svenskt nationellt perspektiv med ett samhällsfostrande och antikvariskt tilltal. Kina slotts fantasifulla rokokofasader manifesterar också andra ideal än den idag kanoniserande bilden av svenskt 1700-tal.

This study analyzes objects of Chinese porcelain found at Kina slott located on Drottningholm just outside Stockholm from a material culture (Material Culture Studies MCS) perspective. The aim is to examine how the materiality of porcelain can generate knowledge within MCS and to shed light on how it influenced the image of the Far East in Sweden during the mid-1700s. The study also wants to open up ways for further analyses of Chinese porcelain at the royal palaces in Sweden. Theory is drawn from various interdisciplinary fields of research and activates the concepts of transculturalism and agency to problematize how the porcelain objects was displayed at the castle and how they interact with the environment. The analyses also raise questions about the objects' age and stylistic development. The gaze of the Art historian and the knowledge of connoisseurship are discussed in a reflective section. The result of the study places the material culture and agency of porcelain as an actor with an important impact on the imagination of the utopian Far East in the 1700s but also as a transformer for cultural exchange between East and West. The objects are believed to have been of great importance as authentic props from a distant world and the discussion also takes into consideration the porcelain objects political influence as a status object and commodity.
