Semiotik och bildanalys med spelifiering i fokus. / Semiotics and image analysis with focus on gamification

En karaktärs avsikter och handlingar ger åskådaren en uppfattning och bild om varför en karaktär agerar eller tar beslut utifrån sina förutsättningar. Jag kommer att analysera Frankensteins motivationer i skapandet av Frankensteins monster med hjälp av adaptionerna Frankenstein (1931) och The Bride of Frankenstein (1935) regisserade av James Whale. I samband med analysen kommer jag även att använda mig av Mary Shelleys roman Frankenstein (1818) för att ge ett ytterligare perspektiv i Frankensteins initiala avsikter och motivation som förklaras mer djupgående i romanen. Analysens huvudsakliga fokus kommer att ligga i beskrivningen av tre aspekter av motivationen, vilket är Frankensteins motivation inom vetenskapen, hans självglorifiering, relationer och en undersökning kring hur de samspelar med varandra.

In this essay I want to share some of the concepts and literary references that I collected my carrier bag over the years. In doing so, I hope to establish where my artistic practice finds resonance and has grown from. To come closer to my understanding of perception and imagination, I will let myself be guided by a phrase from the writer Octavia E. Butler: ”There is nothing new under the sun, but there are new suns”. A proposal to navigate from multiple centers, rather than the notion of an objective truth. I begin to discuss the hierarchy of the senses and its connection to how the world is organized. While doing so I will jumping fast between references from Trinh T. Minh-Ha and Laura Mulvey, as well as my own gathering of visual representations on my phone and connect it to Mark Fisher’s Capitalist Realism. With the help from Tina Campt, I will emphasize on a reading of images beyond a singular meaning. This approach will appear through out the essay and develop further into a listening inspired by Campt and Pauline Oliveros; to tune into one’s body and surrounding; to be guided by your senses, not by an expected idea of something. Like the straight arrow of time.  Through the monologue of a character in Ursula K. Le Guin’s novel The Dispossessed, I will continue to elaborated on time in my artistic practice, like the co-existence of linear and circular time. This will be followed by a thought of interpretation as a listening field. A concept coined by Oliveros to describe how meaning is conditioned by our position within a force field. This is the crescendo to the finishing pages on my master project of a sound installation based on interpretations of a score.  The score will be sung by an ensemble, based on Fred Moten’s definition of a changeable constellation, and at parts alter in duration and form depending on how the members of the ensemble organize their life or experience time. Echoed through out the essay is a quote from Edouard Glissant on utopia as a form of totality but without a pre-existing model, that is amplified in the end paragraphs with the significance of the input from the ensemble. By inviting other people to make sounds, I’m interested in the unpredictable elements of the interpretations; disturbing noises, dissonance. An attempt to fool myself to not follow my expectations.

A couple of years ago I had a studio that was small and messy. It contained a desk, a loom and a shelf filled with old cotton bed sheets, spilling its contents out and onto the floor. The room was originally built as a recording studio which made the atmosphere awkwardly quiet and cramped. There was one small window placed in the middle of the ceiling. One day, I think it was spring, a big fat seagull came and lay down on that skylight. I tried to scare him off, but he sat where he sat. He returned day after day - would just sit there for many hours, then leave. A total eclipse.Sometimes I talk of my practice as a fumbling. Hands can be restless, mine constantly seek activity. They keep on working even though they do not know where or how this work will end up. Never quite finished, kept in constant motion. In the hands rests knowledge of learned movement patterns, techniques, and senses. The monotonousness of the craft is important. Each movement must be performed in a specific way, where a motion feeds into the next to maintain the flow. I sew one stitch at a time and a shape emerges from the movement. It looks like a beak, followed by throat, breast, belly and tail.

Denna kandidatuppsats behandlar problematiken mellan en tät och grön stad. Stadsplanering har på senare år kommit att handla mer och mer om förtätning. Med förtätning menas att staden byggs inåt vilket ger en motsättning mellan tätt och grönt då potentiella grönområden i stället bebyggs. Även om grönskan har fått ta en större plats i planeringen av städer minskar dessa ytor i takt med att staden blir tätare. Det finns ekonomiska, sociala och miljömässiga skäl till att förtäta städer. Dessa tre aspekter är huvudpelare för att skapa en hållbar stad. Den hållbara utvecklingen ska kunna möta dagens behov utan att kompromissa om framtida generationers möjlighet att möta deras. Hållbar utveckling har med detta citat vuxit fram som en ledande princip för långsiktig global utveckling. Malmö har som mål att vara världsledande inom hållbar stadsutveckling.Syftet med vår studie är att definiera vilka gröna kvaliteter en Pocket park kan till- föra i strävan efter en tät och hållbar stad i Malmö. Även hur dessa bör utformas och anläggas för att dess kvaliteter ska framhävas på bästa möjliga sätt. Pocket parken kan som grönt koncept tillgodose staden ur ett hållbarhetsperspektiv som landar i de tre utgångspunkterna ekologiskt, ekonomiskt och socialt.Malmö har länge haft epitetet Parkernas stad vilket främst associeras till Pil- dammsparken, Slottsparken och Kungsparken, vilka utgör en del av Malmös identitet. Trots att staden fått den här benämningen har Malmö mindre grönytor per person än genomsnittet i Sverige. I dagsläget expanderar Malmö och det är viktigt att det planeras för grönytor, eftersom det är hård konkurrens om stadens ytor. Grönytor har restorativa effekter och ökar livskvaliteten i staden. Ett sätt att integrera gröna miljöer i den täta staden är att anlägga Pocket parker. Det vill säga en liten grön plats som ger möjlighet till andrum från stadens puls och skapar plats för möten i staden.I vår studie har vi valt att använda oss av mixed methods men med avstamp i kvalitativ metod. Forskningen har en utgångspunkt i en pragmatisk metodologi. För att på bästa sätt kunna utforma gestaltningsförslag på Pocket parker i Malmö har vi genomfört observationer på fyra utvalda platser i centrala delar av staden. Dessa observationer har varierat i omfattning men har alla varit av icke delta-gande karaktär.Utifrån våra empiri- och litteraturstudier har vi analyserat vårt material, det vill säga både text och diagram. Genom analysen har vi landat i fyra stycken gestalt- ningsförslag varav två mer omfattande och två mindre. Detta för att ge förslag på hur Pocket parker i Malmö skulle kunna se ut.Med utgångspunkt i vår forskningsfråga som var Vilken betydelse skulle Pocket par- ken kunna ha för Malmö i strävan mot att bli en grön och hållbar stad? har vi kommit fram till följande fem positiva effekter för Malmö:1. En identitet till området den placeras i 2. Möjlighet för såväl motion och lek som rekreation och vila 3. En mötesplats för människor i staden 4. En överraskning i staden 5. Ett mikroklimatEn Pocket park knyter ihop två av de tre hållbarhetsaspekterna; socialt och ekolo- giskt. Pocket parker kan vara en del i en strategi för Malmö och måste ses som ett komplement till större parker. Begreppet Pocket park bör etableras och användas i dagens stadsplanering. Ett sätt att få in grönska i den täta staden kan vara att utveckla ett grönytemått som anger lägsta andel kvadratmeter grönyta per person i staden. På så sätt blir alla verksamma aktörer i Malmö styrda mot samma mål, en grön och hållbar stad. / This bachelor thesis intends to treat the contradiction of a dense and green city. In recent years, urban development has come to focus more on densification. Densification means that the city is built inwards which gives a contrast between dense and green space as potential green space is developed instead. Although vegetation is a major consideration in the planning of cities, these surfaces are reduced as the city becomes denser. There are economic, social and environme- ntal reasons to densify cities. These three aspects are the main pillars to create a sustainable city. Sustainable development is to meet the needs of today without compro- mising the ability of future generations to meet theirs. With this quote sustainable de- velopment has emerged as a guiding principle for long-term global development. Malmö’s goal is to be the global leader in sustainable urban development.The aim of our study is to define the green qualities Pocket parks can bring in pursuit of a dense and sustainable city of Malmö and how the Pocket parks should be designed and constructed so the qualities are emphasized in the best possible way. As a green concept Pocket parks can provide Malmö with sustainabi- lity that rely on the three starting points ecologically, economically and socially.Malmö has for a long time had the epithet City of Parks (Parkernas stad), which is associated mainly with Pildammsparken, Slottsparken and Kungsparken, which are a part of Malmö’s identity. Although the city received this title, Malmö has less green space per person than the average in Sweden. Today Malmö expands and it is important to plan for the green space, as there is competition for the city’s surfaces. Green areas have restorative effects and enhances the quality of life in the city. One way to integrate greenery in the dense city is to build Pocket parks. Pocket parks are small green spaces that provide relief from the hustle and bustle of the city and provide space for meetings.In our study we have chosen to use mixed methods but with a starting point in the qualitative method. The research is based on a pragmatic methodology. To formulate design proposals on Pocket parks in Malmö, we have conducted obser- vations at four selected locations in central parts of the city. These observations have varied in extent, but all have been of the non-participating character. From our empirics and literature, both diagrams and text we have analyzed our mate- rial. The analysis will result in four design proposals, two comprehensive and two cursory. This is to show examples of how Pocket parks could look like in Malmö.We have come up with the following five positive effects on Malmö, from our research question What impact could a Pocket park has for Malmö in striving towards a green and sustainable city?1. An identity to the area where it is placed 2. Opportunities for both exercise and play, recreation and rest 3. A meeting place for the people in the city 4. A surprise in the city 5. A microclimateA Pocket park brings together two of the three aspects of sustainability: social and ecological. Pocket parks can be part of a strategy for Malmö and must be seen as a complement to larger parks. The concept of Pocket parks needs to be established and used in today’s urban planning. One way to place greenery into the dense city can be to develop a measure for greenery (grönytemått) indicating lowest propor- tion square meter green space per person in the city. In this way, all active partici- pants in Malmö are steered toward the same goal, a green and sustainable city.

E-books are not yet fully established on the Swedish book market. A frequently discussed theory is that this might be because of a loss in the reading experience. This thesis has the primary purpose to investigate whether the reading experience from E-books differs from the experience of reading a traditional book in paper. The book used for comparation is a poetry collection named Rakel delat med tio. I have designed the cover and the inlay of this book and as a part of the thesis the working progress is described. The comparison of the two booktypes was made through a randomised controlled trial where one group read the E-book and another group read the traditional book. The respondents thereafter graded different emotions awaked by the reading. My result shows that the reading experience from Rakel delat med tio is less captivatingly when it is read as an E-book. This result indicates that reading poetry in a traditional book may generate more emotions compared to reading the same book as an E-book. Further, two aspects of the E-book has been considered. First, strengths and weaknesses of the E-book is discussed, and second, possible improvements for future E-books are suggested.

Denna rapport involverar dokumentation av designforskning som kretsar kring huruvida möjligheten finns att applicera konstarten teater i stop motion-animerad film. Undersökningen bygger på samspelet mellan det estetiska rummet och aktören som har placerats i detta. Vilka förvrängningar av detta rum som kan påverka relationer till de agerande och främja det sceniska uttrycket på ett sätt som kan vidga det allmänna intresset för både animation och teater. / This thesis involves the documentation of design-research which revolves whether there is a possibility to apply theatre as an art form onto stop motion animated films. The study is built on the interaction between the aesthetic space and the performer who has been placed inside it. What distortions of this space that can influence the relations to the ones acting, and improve the scenic expression in a way that can widen the general interest for both animation and theatre.

Uppsatsen grundas i en beskrivning av den rådande preventivmedeldiskursen iSverige. Syftet med uppsatsen är att studera hur den rådandepreventivmedelsdiskursen representeras på två stora svenska hemsidor medinformation om preventivmedel. I form av det material som bilder, ikoner, färger, textoch layout, avsändare publicerar online för att genom detta se om den rådandepreventivmedelsdiskursen förstärks eller neutraliseras.Undersökningen av hemsidorna har gjorts genom en visuell diskursanalys medutgångspunkt i en semiotisk begrepps-ram. Hemsidorna speglar till olika grad denrådande preventivmedelsdiskursen, där vissa uttryck tydligt skildras genom attfokusera information om preventivmedel enbart till kvinnor som målgrupp. Dockställer sig en av hemsidorna utanför rådande diskurs genom att neutralisera och flerakön får ta plats som målgrupp.
