TITLE: Understanding of Society by Czech Pre-school Children AUTHOR: Nikol Tomášková DEPARTMENT: Institute for Research and Development of Education SUPERVISOR: RNDr. Dominik Dvořák, Ph.D. ABSTRACT: The society's need to teach financial literacy to children of as early as pre-school age is ever increasing. Since there is number of methodologies currently being developed on this topic, the author considers crucial to explore a child's conception of socioeconomic phenomena associated with financial literacy before these guidelines are introduced in Czech nursery schools for practical use. In this thesis pre-school children's perception of such phenomena as profession, employment and associated financial flows, as well as the concept of poverty and wealth are being examined. Theoretical basis of this research uses certain principles of the constructivist model of development and education within the general framework of pre- school education. Our work has been also influenced by the ideas of J. Piaget and L. S. Vygotsky, in particular by those on children's thinking and thought processes. As a method to examine the above mentioned perceptions of children, an in-depth clinical interview has been used. Die Untersuchung beschreibt das Verhältnis von Massenmedien und Öffentlichkeit. Dazu stellt sie die allgemeine Theorie sozialer Systeme des Soziologen Niklas Luhmann vor. Den Grundgedanken der Beobachtung von Beobachtern (Beobachtung zweiter Ordnung) führt sie mit dem philosophischen Traktat des Soziologen und Filmtheoretikers Siegfried Kracauer über den Detektiv-Roman ein. Die Entwürfe von Öffentlichkeit in der Tradition der Vernunftaufklärung der Philosophen Hannah Arendt, Jürgen Habermas und John Dewey werden dekonstruiert. Öffentlichkeit wird reformuliert in der Diktion eines operativen Konstruktivismus, als Ergebnis von Beobachtungen zweiter Ordnung und als ein Medium-Form-Komplex gefaßt. Massenmedien erzeugen durch ihre Formgebung eine Zweitversion der Öffentlichkeit. Die Funktion der Massenmedien besteht in der Sofort-Integration einer Weltgesellschaft durch massenmediale Herstellung einer gemeinsamen Aktualität. Durch permanente Reaktualisierung der Selbstbeschreibung der Gesellschaft leisten sie einen Beitrag zu ihrer Realitätskonstruktion. / The study describes the relationship between mass media and the public. For that purpose it presents the general theory of social systems formulated by the sociologist Niklas Luhmann. The basic idea of the observation of the observers (second order observation) is introduced with the philosophical treatise upon the detective story written by the sociologist and theorist of film Siegfried Kracauer. The concepts of the public worked out by the philosophers Hannah Arendt, Jürgen Habermas and John Dewey following the tradition of the enlightenment are deconstructed. The public is reformulated in the diction of operative constructivism, understood as a result of second order observation and as a medium-form-complex. By creating a form mass media produce a second version of the public. The function of the mass media is to integrate instantly a world-society by generating a common reality.
