A study of the interregional economies of Korea

Han, Kee Chun January 1963 (has links)
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston University / The present empirical study is to implement an interregional input-output model to the Korean regional economies of 1958. In the model, the Korean economy is divided into three regions: Region I consists of Seoul City, Kyonggi-Do, Kangwon-Do and Chungchong-Pudko Provinces; Region II, Chungchong-Namdo, Cholla-Namdo, Cholla-Pudko Province and Cheju Island; Region III, Kyongsang-Pudko and Kyongsang-Nando provinces. Each regional economy is desegregated into twenty industries or sectors following the same sectoral classification made on the 1958 I-0 national table. The structural framework of the Korean interregional model is comprised of two sets of matrices: one being the I-0 production coefficient matrix; the other, the supply coefficient matrix. Since the information regarding the difference in regional production technique is not available, the 1958 Korean I-0 national table is applied for the production coefficients, assuming the same technical coefficients for all three Regions in Korea. The supply coefficient matrix is derived from such statistical data as, The Census of Mining and Manufacturing (1958), various Governmental Reports, etc., to show the supply pattern of the interregional economy. Upon determination of these two structural matrices, a new matrix, the Korean interregional coefficients matrix, is obtained [TRUNCATED]

Some Causes of Inflation in Korea

Lee, Ihn Shik 08 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to find causes of inflation in Korea. We hypothesized that inflation in Korea was a "mixed" inflation generated by not only monetary factors but also nonmonetary factors. The data was obtained mainly from International Finance Statistics (IMF) and Monthly Bulletin (The Bank of Korea). The first chapter introduces the Korean economy. Chapter two surveyed the effects of import prices, wages, and money supply in inflationary process. The third chapter studied some theoretical backgrounds of inflation. Chapter four analyzed the results of statistical tests. Finally, chapter five consisted of summary and policy implications.

Korean Economy and Chaebol’s Transformation : Samsung Global Strategies and the Future Prospect with Economic Democratization / Korean Economy and Chaebol’s Transformation : Samsung Global Strategies and the Future Prospect with Economic Democratization

吳藝鎮 Unknown Date (has links)
In this thesis, the author will scrutinize the chaebol in Korean economy. Since their emergence, their existence has straddled between amity and antagonism. Even if they contributed to Korean economy, they still remain the criticism targets from people. Hence, this research is for investigating the reason and will seek for the better prospect. While I am researching, I tried to keep moderation perspective. Therefore, the author deals with Korean conglomerate’s strong points as well as the criticism points. In this process, research’s basis is on the case study with Samsung and also literature analysis. The propose of research is to reject the polarization perspective in order to avoid harmful consequences and to acknowledge chaebol’s efforts such as global strategies. Moreover, this research will not stretch the meaning of economic democratization and will approach from the co-existence perspective.

Industry stucture, performance and foreign direct investment: The case of Korea. An empirical study of the impact of foreign direct investment on manufacturing performance in the Republic of Korea.

Cope, Michael A. January 1990 (has links)
The objective of this thesis is to investigate the influence and. impact of foreign direct investment inflow into the Republic of Korea. It is also an investigation of the development of the Korean economy. The research investigates the relationship between foreign direct investment and the development of the Korean economy by examining both the macro and micro aspects of the relationship between the two. This involves considering the performance of the Korean economy as a whole and then taking a more detailed approach by treating the analysis of the relationship at the level of individual industrial sectors. It also involves investigating the role played by the Korean government in the development of the economy and the control of foreign direct investment inflow. The analysis uses a two stage approach, first by taking an exploratory correlation analysis of the interaction between the inflow and a series of key variables, which allows a number of tentative conclusions to be drawn. By using these conclusions in conjunction with the literature survey we were able to analyse the nature and impact of foreign direct investment in Korea using regression analysis. The analysis revealed that except for isolated instances, the influence of the inflow of foreign direct investment at either the macro-or micro level is long-term. The positive effect of the inflow appears to be strongest on Gross National Product and Gross Domestic Product and on exports rather than imports. The results from the principal industrial sectors suggest that greatest impact was when the inflow was associated with larger firms. Furthermore the results suggest that the country of origin of the investment may well have an influence. In addition the research highlights the importance of the role played by the Korean government.

Mathematical and historical dynamics of modern economy : an application to the Korean economy / Dynamique mathématique et dynamique historique de l'économie moderne : une application à l'économie sud-coréenne

Kim, Deokmin 06 December 2017 (has links)
It is essential to study nonlinear dynamics in mathematics, and it gives us room to interpret such irregular and unpredictable phenomena as a result of deterministic processes, not mere statistical errors or chances. System dynamics is a methodology as well as a method to implement nonlinear dynamic movements.By these two methods, we capture the crisis in the business cycles and test capital accumulation, and technical changes within the framework of the Macro Stock Management model and apply them to those of the Korean economy. In the latter part of this study, various time series analysis tools are used to estimate the effects of investment on the rates of profit and the effects of wage inequality and consumers’ debt on domestic demand since the global financial crisis of2008. Because the Structural Vector Auto-Regressive (SVAR) model impose on the long run or short run restrictions on the VAR system, it uses to distinguish two variables with similar characteristics, such as the after-tax rate of profit and the rate of profit after payment of interests and dividends excluding taxes (the after-payment rate of profit). Perron (1989) argues that the traditional unit root tests such as the Augmented Dickey-Fuller test are likely to fail to detect the stationarity or non-stationarity of the data if it has structural breaks. Zivot and Andrews (1992) and Lumsdaine and Papell (1997) propose the unit root test of the time series data with a single or two breaks in the time series. The Gregory-Hansen test provides information about a structural break in a cointegration test. The Auto Regressive Distributed Lags (ARDL) model is used to capture long-run relationships between variables.
