Development of an Advanced Semiconductor LaboratoryBemben, Richard Matthew 28 June 2005 (has links)
Engineering faculty and administration at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) have recognized the importance of producing competent scientists and engineers to work in the vast semiconductor industry, especially in the emerging technologies of microelectronics, optoelectronics, and nanotechnology. For this reason, the development of an undergraduate microelectronics minor as well as a more rigorous graduate curriculum has been actively pursued for several years. This paper details the development of an advanced semiconductor processing laboratory course, which serves as a three credit hour capstone course. The course covers circuit layout, semiconductor fabrication, and electrical testing. The following steps were taken in order to accomplish this task: choosing and customizing a computer aided design (CAD) software package for device layout, pMOS process integration on the toolset in the cleanroom facilities at Virginia Tech, and the development of a laboratory manual. / Master of Science

Designing an outdoor learning lab for the elementary school settingShearon, Gregory Glenn January 2001 (has links)
The purpose of this creative project was to develop a master plan for an outdoor learning lab for Daleville Elementary School (DES) in Daleville, Indiana. Utilizing a formal design process, including surveys, case study research, and site analysis, the best solution was devised specific to the needs of DES. Along with a design team from Daleville, additional DES faculty responded to a written survey to validate requests for various features. Daleville students participated in a design workshop to express their own ideas for outdoor learning activities and features. A site analysis was conducted on the school grounds utilizing criteria set for features within the design program. Three concepts were generated, leading to the development of the master plan. The research and design process used to create the master plan have provided data suitable for further research and concepts for outdoor learning labs in the elementary school setting. / Department of Landscape Architecture

Impact of the GPA and prior college experience on the completion of the Navy Medical Laboratory Technician programNunez, Luis A. January 2005 (has links)
CIVINS / The research literature suggests that GPA, along with previously taken college courses, is a better predictor of success of student graduation than any simple measure. The purpose of this casual comparative study was to investigate whether students with prior college experience selecting a military career were better prepared for challenges in military schools than those students who have had no previous college experience. The research was conducted at the Naval School of Health Sciences in San Diego, California, located on the grounds of Naval Medical Center San Diego, California from May 2004 to August 2005. The questionnaire required students to indicate their responses to three questions. Each student (N=50) from two different classes was administered the questionnaire. The return rate was 100%. The study found that there was no difference in grade point average (GPA) of military students with and without prior college experience who were enrolled in the Navy's Medical Laboratory Technician program from May 2004 to August 2005. It was concluded that Navy's policy on requiring students to have certain college prerequisites may not necessarily impact their success in the MLT program. / CIVINS / US Navy (USN) author

A benchmarking study on information management systems for water laboratories in South AfricaBroodryk, GJ, de Beer, WHJ 01 January 2003 (has links)
Abstract
The increasing demand for the chemical monitoring of water qualities emphasises the importance of an efficient and workable
laboratory management system to remain profitable and competitive in a fast growing industry. The management of information
is therefore becoming increasingly important as the effectiveness and profitability of the water laboratory is largely measured
against its management systems and continual improvement programmes. Effective information management forms an important
part of laboratory management to ensure that data are updated and remain current. One way of proving its effectiveness, the
laboratory must provide proof of a controlled and procedurised documentation system and the availability of updated data and
information. The effective control of data and information in the water laboratory by using some kind of information management
system is therefore essential. Laboratory managers are becoming aware of the need for an effective, computerised laboratory data
and information management system as the entry of data and results into a manual system has several disadvantages. The laboratory
manager is increasingly seeking for ways to improve the efficiency of his laboratory and more time must therefore be spent on
managing the laboratory, rather than to facilitate the distribution and control of information.

Digital fabrication and revival craft in Latin America: Alliance between designers and artisansHerrera Polo, Pablo C. 10 1900 (has links)
Latin America has experienced scripting and digital fabrication, and the alliance between designers
and artisans. Taking into account that the revival of crafts has proved very promising in
Latin America (Borges, 2015), the objective of this research is to analyse the diversity of cases
and select those where designers took an interest for strengthening the artisans’ jobs in the
field of pottery and textiles. We found that both revitalised the identity and cultural tradition in
their own countries, in a moment when craft seemed to drop in front of industrial production. By
preserving traditional materials, pieces continue to be unique and customizable, transcending
thus their local origin towards new global markets.
