Digital library research and digital library practice: How do they inform each other? An unpublished study

Saracevic, Tefko, Dalbello, Marija January 2003 (has links)
The findings of technical report has been presented at ASIS&T (American Society for Information Science and Technology) 2004 annual meeting in Providence, R.I., November 13-18, 2004. Abstract published in conference proceedings (pp. 564-566); panel abstract on conference website: http://www.asis.org/Conferences/AM04/abstracts/59.html. / The study surveys two large sets of activities concentrating on digital libraries to examine the following questions: Does digital library research inform digital library practice? And vice versa? To what extent are they connected, now that nearly a decade has passed since they began? Examined were research projects supported by the first and second Digital Library Initiative (DLI), digital library projects listed by the Association for Research Libraries (ARL) and Digital Library Federation (DFL), and selected literature, focusing on the last five years. Methods concentrate only on examination of visible or â surfaceâ sources or records, i.e. information that can be gathered from web sites, open literature, and published data. Limitations of the method are acknowledged; accordingly, caveats are made about conclusions. From this data we conclude that the two activities are not as yet demonstratively connected. A set of differing interpretations and conclusions are included.

Patrons' perceptions of library services at the Mafikeng campus of the North-West university library / Patience Sibongile Ndwandwe

Ndwandwe, Patience Sibongile January 2010 (has links)
Academic libraries exist in institutions of Higher learning to satisfy the information needs of their parent bodies. For libraries to offer quality service, they must implement total quality management and use customer service as a tool to achieve customer satisfaction which will in turn ensure participation and involvement of stakeholders resulting in continuous improvement to the satisfaction of customers. Customer satisfaction will change the negative perception of customers and ensure loyalty. Customer satisfaction requires expectations of customers be known to be satisfied and perceptions to be known,, if negative, be changed. The Study intended to investigate the perceptions of users towards library services of the North West University Library at Mafikeng Campus. Data was collected by means of a questionnaire administered to students and staff in all faculties of the University. A sample of 150 students and 150 staff members was used. The library services that were used in the questionnaire were those that impact on customer care such as circulations, information services, collection development, media and special collections and information access. The main findings showed that both staff and students' perceptions of the library services to be negative due to perceived lack of resources (Books and journals), lack of training on library use and e-resources and incompetent staff. The researcher recommended that the library must put in place structures that will be used to communicate information and educate stakeholders about the library and help identify problem areas to be solved. The recommended structures are a Library Council for students and Library Committee for staff. The researcher also recommends that the library consult with stakeholders on issues of common interest such as training, orientation, rules and regulations to ensure cooperation. The researcher further recommends performance evaluation of the library by stakeholders and benchmarking with other institutions. This study suggested an in depth study of user perceptions for each library service offered and a study of user expectations of different user categories of library services as areas of further research. / Thesis (MBA) North-West University, Mafikeng Campus, 2010

Marketing and income generation in Scottish public library services

Copeland, Susan Marjorie January 2001 (has links)
This thesis investigates the interaction between marketing practice and strategy and resource allocation in Scottish public library services. It focuses, in particular, on the period immediately prior to local government reorganisation in 1996. The historical framework within which public libraries have developed is described. So, too, is the political environment within which the libraries operate. A review of the literature indicates that, although there are examples of good practice with regard to libraries undertaking market research to ascertain the needs of their users, and potential users, many authorities could make improvements in this area. Similarly, the literature suggests that more could be achieved in other ways to ensure that libraries are more efficient, effective and responsive to user needs, and that some of the more systematic and aggressive approaches to fund-raising that are evident in the U.S.A. could be employed to advantage in Scotland. The results of a survey that was undertaken in 1996 support the view that Scottish public libraries could make better use of marketing techniques with a view to targeting the funds they have available and generating additional income. Existing, published, research has drawn attention to the significance of population size with regard to the efficiency of Scottish public libraries. Statistics published by the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) indicate the relevance of the size of local authorities in terms of the amount of income and expenditure per person. This thesis shows that population size is also a significant factor with regard to the use of marketing techniques and the range of ways in which library services generate income.
