Maya Ceramic Production in the Yalahau Region: A Diagnostic Analysis of Unslipped Sherds From Vista Alegre, Quintana RooHorne, Joseph 17 December 2014 (has links)
Along the northern coast of Quintana Roo, Mexico, prehistoric ceramic usage included a variety of unslipped forms. During field excavations at the Maya coastal site of Vista Alegre, Drs. Jeffrey Glover and Dominique Rissolo recovered a high volume of sherds comprising a number of vessel type-varieties and forms. Vessel fragments collected from the Vista Alegre assemblage are comprised largely of ambiguous unslipped plain and unslipped striated sherds. This study explores distinct diagnostic attributes associated with these unlipped plain and unslipped striated sherds such as paste composition, texture, color, rim forms, and handle styles. This research facilitates future ceramic research along the northern coast of Quintana Roo promoting otherwise undefined sherds into a more systematic classification based on recorded modal characteristics.

Developing a Framework for a New Visual-Based Interface Design in Autodesk MayaWithers, Timothy Clayton 2012 August 1900 (has links)
In this thesis, I develop an efficient and user-friendly node-based interface to be used in the creation of a particle system in Autodesk Maya. Maya's interface inconsistencies were identified and solutions were designed based on research in a number of fields related to human-computer interaction (HCI) as well as taking design queues from other highly successful 3D programs that employ a node-based interface. This research was used to guide the design of the interface in terms of organizing the data into logical chunks of information, using color to help the user develop working mental models of the system, and also using simple, easy to identify, graphical representations of a particle system. The result is an easy-to-use and intuitive interface that uses a visual-based approach in creating a particle system in Maya. By following guidelines laid out by previous researchers in the field of HCI, the interface should be a less frustrating to use and more organized version of Maya's current interface.

<p>Denna uppsats handlar om hur jag arbetat med att ta fram två spelbara karaktärer, en så historiskt korrekt samuraj som möjligt och en 2-årig pojke, som skulle kunna vara hans son. Båda ska uppfylla kraven för nästa generations dataspel. Jag har skrivit om arbetsprocessen, och om de svårigheter jag stött på. De flesta problemen har jag lyckats lösa, men några har jag valt att kringgå. Det finns också en reflekterande text, som tar upp det allmänna intresset just nu för japansk kultur och historia, och där jag bl a försöker förklara varför jag valt att skapa dessa två karaktärer. Den frågeställning som jag anser mig ha fått svar på är vad det innebär att skapa två relativt olika karaktärer med hjälp av programmen Maya och ZBrush. Framför allt har jag blivit väl bekant med ZBrush, där jag utnyttjat möjligheten att göra textureringen i 3D (polypainting), i stället för att på traditionellt sätt arbeta i 2D med Photoshop. Jag är nöjd med slutresultatet och hoppas att det kan inspirera andra, samtidigt som det finns en del att lära av de svårigheter jag stött på på vägen.</p>

WEAPONS AND STRATEGIES OF WARFARE IN LATE POSTCLASSIC PETÉN, GUATEMALA: THE USE OF THE BOW AND ARROWSanchez Polo, Jose Romulo 01 December 2009 (has links)
The role of warfare in Maya society is much debated, but it seems to have been widespread during the Late Postclassic (A.D. 1250-1519) and Protohistoric (A.D. 1519-1696) periods. This study investigates the manner in which the Maya engaged in warfare during these centuries by reviewing archaeological data on Maya warfare and Spanish accounts of their contacts with the Maya of central Petén, Guatemala. The bow and arrow, which were not used during the Classic period, are "area weapons" that can be used at a distance, and appear to have changed the character and tactics of warfare in the Postclassic period and in Maya defensive interactions with the Spaniards. Eighty small projectile points from the sites of Zacpetén and Ixlú were analyzed. These triangular points, believed to have tipped arrows, were made of chert and obsidian and varied particularly in the placement and number of notches, in the shape of their bases, and in the amount of retouch. Notching and basal variation do not clearly relate to differing ethno-political units in the central Petén Postclassic, to functional areas of the sites, or to ballistic performance. Variations in amount of retouch may indicate that the points were made quickly.

This thesis reports voice onset time (VOT) of word–initial ejectives, implosives, and plain stops in Mopan, Itzaj, and Yukateko Maya. In this study, implosive bilabials and bilabial, alveolar, and velar ejectives and plain stops in word–initial position from Mopan, Itzaj, and Yukateko speakers were measured from the stop release to the onset of voicing of the following vowel, and results were compared to VOT of other languages with the same phonemes. All three languages have long average (negative) VOTs for implosives, contradicting Schumann–Galvez's claim that both Itzaj (2000) and Mopan (1997) have unaspirated rather than implosive voiced bilabials. Among other results, Yukateko had a very long VOT for plain velar stops, only slightly shorter than its velar ejective, and the average VOT of the plain bilabial voiceless stop in Mopan was actually longer than the corresponding ejective. Further study of these anomalies is warranted.
