An investigation into the efficiency of the port / rail interface at the Port of Durban

Trade liberalization and resultantly globalization has led to the relative free flow of goods, services, capital and people. The transport system in South Africa must be highly reliable and rapid to contribute to economic development. The focus of this research study is on the Port/Rail Interface in the Port of Durban which critically assesses the transfer of goods particularly from rail transport to and from vessels within the port precinct. Some of the major constraints identified in the study related to poor infrastructure, operations and levels of services; lack of maintenance, availability of rolling stock, locomotives and cargo stacking space. Transnet's role is pivotal in providing efficient port and rail operations and is currently upgrading infrastructure, operations and capacity of the port and rail services. One of the main objectives of the study is to present recommendations to Transnet management that arise out of the shortcomings identified during the course of the research study. / Transport Economics / M. Seguiuse a metodologia do Programa Brasileiro GHG Protocol versão 2016 para quantificar as emissões. As fontes emissoras foram organizadas de acordo com os limites operacionais classificados nos escopos 1, 2 e 3. A emissão total no ano inventariado foi de 1.035,76 tCO2e e 73,26 tCO2 biogênico. A fonte que mais contribuiu nas emissões foi a combustão ferroviária com 981,05 tCO2e, seguida da geração de energia elétrica 22,67 tCO2e. Considerando a interdisciplinaridade desta pesquisa, compreende que o estudo dos impactos atmosféricos do sistema de trem de João Pessoa serviu como parâmetro para o delineamento de estratégias e técnicas de mitigação da poluição do ar no Estado da Paraíba, tal como a melhoria de qualidade de vida para gerações vindouras. / The present study aimed to inventory Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions from the rail system of the metropolitan region of João Pessoa in the base year of 2016. The methodology of the Brazilian GHG Protocol version 2016 was followed to quantify emissions. The issuing sources were organized according to the operational limits classified in scopes 1, 2 and 3. The total emission in the inventoried year was 1,035.76 tCO2e and 73.26 tCO2 biogenic. The source that most contributed to the emissions was the railway combustion with 981.05 tCO2e, followed by the generation of electric energy 22.67 tCO2e. Considering the interdisciplinary nature of this research, it is understood that the study of the atmospheric impacts of the João Pessoa train system served as a parameter for the design of strategies and techniques to mitigate air pollution in the State of Paraíba, such as improving the quality of life for generations to come.

This diploma thesis deals with the Common-Rail fuel system. The aim of this work is to develop an overview of development of the fuel-injection system. The first part is devoted to the description of the selected fuel system. All the parts of the system are described and explained there. Also the explanation of the management of the injection is included. Subsequently, other variants of the fuel system are described here. Further parts focuse on the diagnostic instruments and measuring emissions, also operational materials are described and divided in there. The last part of the thesis is devoted to the economic calculations which were made from the perspective of the economy operation of motor vehicles. The work also includes an evaluation of the measurements results and determines the appropriateness of the use of the Common-Rail fuel system for vehicles.

The thesis dealt with the quality of railway stations in the Czech Republic. It was focused mainly on the evaluation of the services offerings. The main objective of the thesis was to explore the potential of railway station within the scope of the trade development and tourism. For this purpose, the railway station in the city of Tábor was chosen. The thesis contains a mapping of the given place, comparing with the foreign railway stations and a marketing research carried out among train passengers travelling with the Czech Railway company. Based on the above mentioned data, the proposals were made with the goal to improve the range of trade and tourism services offerings and so to help better perception of the Tábor railway station in the eyes of the passengers.

Estudio numérico de la propagación de ondas guiadas en rieles ferroviarios

In recent decades techniques related to the measurement of elastic waves have advanced significantly. It is now possible with relatively inexpensive equipment to record amplitudes and frequency bands that were unthinkable two decades ago. This has led to the development of theoretical topics which application was questionable until not long ago, to profit from new technological potential in obtaining more and better experimental information. In this context the study of the propagation of guided waves in solids is presented as a knowledge that allows to detect damage with efficiency and economy in a number of structures in which at least one dimension is much larger than the other two. This is the case for rails, tubulations and pressure vessels among others. In this work, guided waves propagation characteristics are studied, first in a prismatic bar and then within the geometry of a rail. In both cases, dispersion curves were computed according two different work methodologies, first using an axisymmetric model and then corroborated with a model of periodic conditions. Finally propagation of a Tone-Burst waves were simulated on the analyzed geometries, leading to the discussion of how the waves scatter along its propagation. The results obtained were the dispersion curves of both sections. / En las últimas décadas técnicas relacionadas con la medición de ondas elásticas han avanzado sensiblemente. Actualmente, con equipamientos relativamente económicos es posible registrar amplitudes y franjas de frecuencia que eran impensables dos décadas atrás. Este hecho ha motivado que tópicos teóricos que hasta hace un tiempo tenían una aplicación cuestionable tengan que ser desarrollados para poder aprovechar las nuevas potencialidades tecnológicas en la obtención de mayor y mejor información experimental. En este contexto, el estudio de la propagación de ondas guiadas en sólidos se presenta como un conocimiento que posibilita detectar daño con eficiencia y economía en una serie de estructuras en las cuales por lo menos una dimensión es mucho mayor que las otras dos. Es el caso de estructuras tubulares, rieles o recipientes sometidos a presión entre otras. En el presente trabajo se estudian las características de propagación de ondas guiadas primeramente una barra rectangular y posteriormente en la geometría de un riel. En ambos casos, fueron calculadas las curvas de dispersión obtenidas con por dos metodologías de trabajo por elementos finitos, la primer metodología fue emplear un cálculo aplicando un modelo axisimétrico, y luego corroborado con un modelo de condiciones periódicas y posteriormente fue simulada la propagación de una onda tipo Toneburst sobre las geometrías analizadas discutiendo cómo dicha onda se dispersa durante su propagación. Los resultados obtenidos fueron las curvas de dispersión de ambas secciones.

The aim was to highlight the importance of railway transport in tourism, the comparison of railway operators in the Czech Republic and project proposal preparation of the of the tourism product. The importance of rail traffic is capture with respect to all the touristic, occasional, nostalgic or charter trains and regular trains transport. The comparison of railway operators is access not only from the perspective of individual operators, their services and train equipment, but also from the perspective of the traveler and their satisfaction with the services offered. Based on the findings of the situational analysis and carried out field research are design proposals measures and the tourism product compiled.

Praktické měření a diagnostika systému Common-rail

This diploma thesis deals with practical measurement and diagnostics on chosen Hyundai Santa Fe vehicle and on the training panel. The thesis is divided into two parts. The first part is to familiarize the reader with the fuel system of the diesel engine with the common-rail pressure magazine, with the concept of serial and parallel diagnostics. In the second part, the diplomat performs serial and parallel diagnostics of the diesel engine fuel system on the vehicle and on the training panel. The diplomant will further describe the measured data and evaluate the differences in the measurements.
