An environmental research laboratory for Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge

Bricker, Michael C. January 1985 (has links)
As scientific understanding of the origin and order of coastal barrier islands continues to grow, designers are being forced to reevaluate their design strategies for the shore and near-shore areas. This project involves the design of an Environmental Research Laboratory on Back Bay, in the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The problems and possibilities associated with building on the barrier islands have been analyzed. and design solutions applicable to this and other sites have been presented. In the final design, the structure has been located in the bay, shoreward of the barrier islands and elevated to permit sunlight and rainfall to pass as uninterrupted as possible to the areas below. The object of such design is to have a minimum effect on the landscape (or waterscape) below the building, while creating new green space above. All these characteristics are intended as positive results, able to transfer to other water or land sites. / Master of Architecture

Estados Unidos, Europa e Japão detêm juntos a maior porção desses seletivos investimentos / Abstract: The present dissertation handle deals with to the pharmaceutical industry and the structural transformations in its chain of value, that have produced impacts varied between the actors and institutions that integrate it. Centered in the analysis of the technological activities, the work searchs to understand in which situations the decentralization route the developing countries occurs and in which the centralization is strengthened. The conclusion standes out that some consolidated standards and behaviors had been being modified in order to allow that small companies started to integrate articulated strategies of research. In this new picture, it offers and the demand of scientific knowledge joins agents with different attributions and resources. Strategies of outsourcing international show a relative flexibilization in the barriers to the entrance, what it makes possible in some measure, insertion of small companies in specific technological niches. However, the research carried through with great pharmaceutical companies sample that initiatives of decentralization of technological activities still are hesitates and prompt. United States, Europe and Japan withhold together the biggest portion of these selective invest / Mestrado / Mestre em Política Científica e Tecnológica

Design and implementation of a microcomputer based Laboratory and Operations Information System (LOIS) for wastewater treatment plants

Harvey, Glenn B. 08 September 2012 (has links)
The requirements for a wastewater treatment plant microcomputer based Laboratory and Operations Information System (LOIS) were considered. Emphasis was placed on combining data generated by the laboratory and the operations divisions of the Alexandria Sanitation Authority. Goals were established to meet the information needs of key decision makers within the Authority and external information consumers such as regulatory authorities and design engineers. Integration of laboratory analysis and plant operational data was of prime importance. A series of related computer programs was developed to manage laboratory and operational data and calculate results derived from both sources. The programs stressed data integrity, flexible report generation, statistical and graphical data analysis, and ease of use. A program was developed to address laboratory quality control data management and the production of quality control charts. The computer programs were written in a generic fashion so as to be applicable to other water or wastewater treatment plants and to provide maximum flexibility for future expansion. Programs were developed in a modular fashion to allow greater ease of maintenance and revision in the future. Common subroutines were employed wherever possible. Some report generation subprograms were written specifically to the requirements of the Alexandria Sanitation Authority. / Master of Science
