However, the universities, through their activities of research, learning and extension, ending up by generating wastes potentially hazardous, such as the chemical laboratories. However they cannot more delay anymore the solution of this problem. This research task was elaborated with the aim of presenting a study about the chemical wastes handling potentially hazardous in the universities campi, with the study of the Chemistry Department (CD) of the Universidade Federal de São Carlos. Through visits to other institutions in order to know their experiences with the management of chemical wastes and, on the basis of the survey of passive and active of the wastes in the chemical laboratories of CD, proposals to the management to these problems can be elaborated. These proposals are based on the prevention and in the corrective control. The preventive focus, primary, aims the survey of techniques and actions to reduce the generating sources (chemical laboratories of education and research). The corrective control aims the treatment and posterior disposal of the generated wastes. As conclusions, it is aimed to subsidize the implantation of a program of management of the hazardous wastes in the UFSCar, aiming to reduce their environment impacts. / As universidades têm um papel fundamental na formação do cidadão, ou seja, são centros de ciência, de tecnologia e de conhecimento que afetam toda a sociedade. Entretanto, as universidades, através das suas atividades de pesquisa, ensino e extensão, acabam gerando resíduos potencialmente perigosos, como os de laboratórios químicos. Porém elas não podem mais postergar a solução deste problema. Este trabalho de pesquisa foi elaborado com o objetivo de apresentar um estudo sobre o manejo dos resíduos químicos potencialmente perigosos em campi universitários, com estudo de caso do Departamento de Química (DQ) da Universidade Federal de São Carlos. Através de visitas a outras instituições para conhecer suas experiências em gerenciamento de resíduos químicos e, com base no levantamento do passivo e do ativo de resíduos de laboratórios químicos do DQ, pode-se elaborar propostas para a gestão destes resíduos. Estas propostas são baseadas na prevenção e no controle corretivo. O enfoque preventivo, prioritário, visa a levantamento de técnicas e ações para redução nas fontes geradoras (laboratórios químicos de ensino e de pesquisa). O controle corretivo visa o tratamento e posterior disposição dos resíduos gerados. Como conclusões, objetiva-se subsidiar a implantação de um programa de gestão dos resíduos perigosos na UFSCar, visando reduzir seus impactos ambientais.
