The paper presents details of a numerical analysis and simplified construction of strengthened glue laminated beams. Glue laminated beams are strengthened through the use of steel reinforcements embedded between the lamellas of the beams. The study compares the numerical results from reinforced and prestressed beams, simply reinforced beams and non-modified beams. Parametric studies were undertaken to evaluate the effects on reinforcement thickness, beam span, prestressing force and prestressing loss. Modified and prestressed beams with wide spans and large dimensions had a significantly higher design load compared to non-modified beams with similar geometry and span. In the most beneficial cases, a load increase of 438% was observed for point load at midspan and 346% for uniformly distributed load.

Dynamic Stability of Uncertain Laminated Beams Subjected to Subtangential Loads

Because of the inherent complexity of fiber-reinforced laminated composites, it can be challenging to manufacture composite structures according to their exact design specifications, resulting in unwanted material and geometric uncertainties. Thus the understanding of the effect of uncertainties in laminated structures on their static and dynamic responses is highly important for a reliable design of such structures. In this research, we focus on the deterministic and probabilistic stability analysis of laminated structures subject to subtangential loading, a combination of conservative and nonconservative tangential loads, using the dynamic criterion. Thus a shear-deformable laminated beam element, including warping effects, is derived to study the deterministic and probabilistic response of laminated beams. This twenty-one degrees of freedom element can be used for solving both static and dynamic problems. In the first-order shear deformable model used here we have employed a more accurate method to obtain the transverse shear correction factor. The dynamic version of the principle of virtual work for laminated composites is expressed in its nondimensional form and the element tangent stiffness and mass matrices are obtained using analytical integration. The stability is studied by giving the structure a small disturbance about an equilibrium configuration, and observing if the resulting response remains small. In order to study the dynamic behavior by including uncertainties into the problem, three models were developed: Exact Monte Carlo Simulation, Sensitivity-Based Monte Carlo Simulation, and Probabilistic FEA. These methods were integrated into the developed finite element analysis. Also, perturbation and sensitivity analysis have been used to study nonconservative problems, as well as to study the stability analysis using the dynamic criterion. / Ph. D.

This study aimed to theoretical and experimental study of composite laminated beams using two species of Amazonian woods, going against the various theories that MLC must be built with low-density woods with a single species. The experimental verification of theoretical models to study was made by means of bending tests on prototype composed of two (2) species Itaúba (Mezilaurus itaúba) and Cumaru (Dipteryx odorata (Aub). Wil) beams. In conclusion , it consists of more than one wood species of the Amazon beams can be produced , provided that take into account the similarity of the physical properties of the species to use the appropriate adhesive as was verified in this study . / A utilização de vigas compostas de madeira, formadas pela união de peças de pequenas dimensões, vem alcançando importância no setor de estruturas de madeira do Brasil, principalmente em virtude da escassez de peças sólidas de grandes dimensões. Este trabalho teve como objetivo o estudo teórico e experimental de vigas laminadas composta utilizando duas espécies de madeiras Amazônica, indo de encontro a várias teorias de que MLC deve ser construídas com madeiras de baixa densidade com uma única espécie. A aferição experimental dos modelos teóricos com estudo foi feita por meio de ensaios de flexão em protótipos de vigas compostas por duas (2) espécies Itaúba (Mezilaurus itaúba) e Cumaru (Dipteryx odorata (Aubl). Wil). Concluindo, que vigas composta com mais de uma espécies de madeira da Amazônica pode ser produzida, desde que, levem em consideração a similaridade das propriedades física das espécies para uso do adesivo adequado como foi verificado nesta pesquisa.
