De la seconde moitié du XIXe à la fin du XXe siècle la question des limites du langage devient centrale. Chez Baudelaire, Hofmannsthal et Michaux, les contradictions du concept de Littérature et du romantisme aboutissent à une double postulation entre rêve et maladie du langage. Ils placent tous les trois au cœur de leurs préoccupations poétiques l’écriture d’une « langue muette » (Baudelaire), qu’ils désignent comme « le langage du rêve » (Baudelaire), la langue des « choses muettes » (Hofmannsthal) et la « phrase sans mots » (Michaux). Dans chacune de ces œuvres se manifeste une métamorphose progressive du problème des limites du langage. L’absolu poétique et la tendance métaphysique à « donner du front contre les bornes du langage » (Wittgenstein) sont dépassés par la mise en œuvre de poétiques de conciliations des contraires et par un franchissement des « limites assignées à la poésie » (Baudelaire). Le renouvellement du lyrisme s’accompagne d’un intérêt pour les arts, qui se manifeste notamment par un passage à la scène du théâtre et de l’opéra pour Hofmannsthal, et par un « déplacement des activités créatrices » vers la peinture pour Michaux. De la question des limites du langage au dépassement des limites de la poésie, l’idée d’une traduction de la langue muette met en jeu une structure de promesse au coeur du langage. Les réponses poétiques qu’y apportent Baudelaire, Hofmannsthal et Michaux, ainsi que leurs réflexions sur la nécessité d’une conscience de l’indicible et d’une éthique du malentendu engagent le développement d’une pensée synoptique des limites du langage, dans laquelle le geste et la danse offrent une voie d’accomplissement. / From the second half of the XIXth century to the end of the XXth century, the problem of the limits of language becomes central. With Baudelaire, Hofmannsthal and Michaux, the contradictions of the concept of Literature and of romanticism leads to a double set of themes between the dream of language and the illness of language. As their main poetical care, all three authors respectively focus on the writing of the “mute language” (Baudelaire), that they call “dream’s language” (Baudelaire), “silent things” language (Hofmannsthal) and “sentence with no words’ (Michaux). In each of those works, a progressive metamorphosis of the problem of the limits of language can be observed. The authors go beyond the idea of a Poetical Absolute and the metaphysical tendency to “run against the boundaries of language” (Wittgenstein) with the construction of poetics of overcoming contraries and the passing over of the “limits set to poetry” (Baudelaire). The renewal of lyricism goes with an interest for arts, that manifests itself through a transition on the stage of theatre and opera for Hofmannsthal and through a “shift of creative activities” towards painting regarding Michaux. From the problem of the limits of language to the exceeding of the limits of poetry, the idea of the translation of the silent language puts a promise at stake in the very heart of language. The poetical answers given to that stake by Baudelaire, Hofmannsthal and Michaux, and their thoughts on the necessary consciousness of both the unspeakable and the ethics of the misunderstanding engage the development of a synoptic thought of the limits of language, in which gesture and dance offer a way of accomplishment.
