Abstract This article investigates the notion of the ‘contemporary vernacular’ in the visual arts and how this is invented or developed in response to certain national imperatives, as delineated in Hobsbawm & Ranger (1983), Fine (2004) and Bowe (1993). It then examines the sociopolitical factors that give rise to the need for the invention of the ‘contemporary vernacular’ and the characteristics of such ‘vernacular’ arts, and clarifies this theoretical explanation briefly in relation to two historical examples, viz. the Russian matrioshka doll and the products of Morris & Co., the Victorian craft company belonging to William Morris. It then examines three examples of contemporary South African crafts, namely Ardmore Ceramic Art, Kaross embroideries and the Mapula project. The works produced by these initiatives show stylistic characteristics that reveal a developing South African ‘contemporary vernacular’ and, furthermore, in their modes of production, correlate with the social, political and economic characteristics of ‘vernacular’ arts in a number of countries.

The existing component protocols, as well as new protocols introduced at runtime into NPSNET-V are written in their native programming language. As a result, they require authoring and compiling by a trained programmer. The long time frame required to change or introduce new protocols into NPSNET-V, a dynamically extensible virtual environment, detracts from the dynamicism of the virtual environment. Networking optimization thresholds to support NPSNET-V needed to be determined to ensure that the networking is performed efficiently, and system resources to other systems, such as graphics rendering, are maximized. This thesis implements component protocols described using Extensible Markup Language (XML) into NPSNET-V. These protocols are created with different fidelity resolutions for each protocol, which can be swapped at runtime based on the network state. Network testing was performed to find the ideal maximum packet rates based on the impact on CPU utilization and packet loss. By using XML, non-programmers can edit protocols for inclusion in a simulation at runtime. Important contributions include adding protocols to NPSNET-V with high-resolution and low-resolution versions, described by XML documents. Basic network optimization is added to NPSNET-V to take advantage of the protocolsα resolution switching ability. The network testing revealed a linear correlation between the packet sending rate and CPU utilization, and a polynomial correlation between the packet sending rate and percentage packet loss. / US Army (USA) author

Johannesburg, February 16, 2015. / Random context picture grammars are used to generate pictures through successive refinement. There are three important subclasses of random context picture grammars, namely random permitting context picture grammars, random forbidding context picture grammars and table-driven context-free picture grammars. These grammars generate the random permitting context picture languages, random forbidding context picture languages and table-driven context-free picture languages, respectively. Theorems exist which provide necessary conditions that have to be satisfied by a language before it can be classified under a particular subclass. Some of these theorems include the pumping and shrinking lemmas, which have been developed for random permitting context picture languages and random forbidding context picture languages respectively. Two characterization theorems were developed for the table-driven context-free picture languages. This dissertation examines these existing theorems for picture languages, i.e., the pumping and shrinking lemmas and the two characterisation theorems, and attempts to prove theorems, which will provide an alternative to the existing theorems and thus provide new tools for identifying languages that do not belong to the various classes. This will be done by adapting Ogden’s idea of marking parts of a word which was done for the string case. Our theorems essentially involve marking parts of a picture such that the pumping operation increases the number of marked symbols and the shrinking operation reduces it.

In Nach Mitternacht, the author Inngard Keun unveils a society that is a counter-image to that portrayed by the National Socialist regime. By giving the reader an amplified yet sharp picture oflife in the Third Reich, Keun not only exposes the Regime's repression mechanisms, but she also raises the question of individual responsibility among the petit-bourgeoisie, discussing very early-on the issue of co-participation. Keun's critical engagement does not fall short of aesthetical quality. A seemingly naive narrator deconstructs Nazi discourse through various literary devices which break the one-to-one system of signification typical of totalitarian discourses. Keun succeeds in deconstructing the Nazi regime by focusing on specific parts of society, zooming in on different situations and on the lives of different people, offering the reader a dissected picture of life in the Third Reich. Hence, Keun delivers a critical and complex political analysis of the early years of the Third Reich.
