Reliability of FEQDrain for Modeling Performance of Sand Treated with Large-Diameter Prefabricated Drains for Liquefaction Mitigation

Meservy, Travis Hatch 01 December 2017 (has links)
Finite element modeling of laminar shear box testing that consisted of loose sand treated with large diameter prefabricated vertical drains (PVDs), was performed. The objective of the modeling was to evaluate the reliability of the computer program FEQDrain for predicting excess pore pressure ratios (Ru) at sites treated with prefabricated drains. FEQDrain was found to be capable of successfully modeling measured excess pore pressure ratio time histories from the laminar shear box experiment, as long as an appropriate combination of ˜number of equivalent cycles and ˜shaking duration was chosen, and sensitive parameters were in the range of measured values. Hydraulic conductivity, soil compressibility, and cycles to liquefaction are sensitive parameters and govern the computed Ru values.Modeling shows that the loading rate in the laminar shear box (15 cycles at 2 Hz) likely induced higher Ru values than would be expected in a typical earthquake event with a longer duration. The longer duration allows the drains to dissipate pore pressures and prevent liquefaction. The number of equivalent cycles and duration of shaking combinations recommended for various moment magnitudes in the FEQDrain user manual predict lower, but similar Ru versus time curves. Thus, suggesting that PVDs would be equally effective for any size earthquake. However, drains are most effective at preventing liquefaction when earthquake ground motions are long and uniform, rather than short and intense. Results from models in this study compare favorably with those from computer modeling performed by Howell et al. (2014). The individual hydraulic conductivity and compressibility values were different they were somewhat compensating. Similar Ru values can be modeled with different combinations of these parameters.Based on computer analyses, wick drains and 2 diameter PVDs were found to be relatively ineffective for preventing liquefaction. However, 3 diameter PVDs are fairly effective but can be overwhelmed during intense shaking. In contrast, 4 diameter and larger PVDs are significantly more effective.

An Experimental Study on the Local Void Fraction Measurements in Large-Diameter Vertical Pipes using Optical Fiber Probes

Stankovic, Branko 08 1900 (has links)
This thesis contains the details of an experimental study on the local void fraction measurements in large-diameter vertical pipes using optical fiber probes. The experiments were conducted in vertical transparent acrylic pipe of a 20-cm diameter. An experimental test facility used for performing of experiments, was designed as a low-pressure air-water loop, which can operate in either a natural circulation mode or a forced circulation mode. Radial void fraction profiles were measured using an optical fiber probe. An average cross-sectional void fraction was calculated by integration of the data obtained by the optical fiber probe. The average void fraction was also calculated using two-phase pressure-drop measurements . The results were compared and the resulting good accuracy of the optical fiber probe was determined. The flow regime results were plotted in terms of superficial gas and liquid velocities using flow regime maps of several researchers. Absence of the slug flow regime in large-diameter pipes was observed during the experiments. The data were correlated using the drift-flux model. A near unity distribution parameter showed that nearly uniform radial distribution of the void fraction dominates in two-phase flow through large-diameter vertical pipes. / Thesis / Master of Engineering (ME)

Large tunnels for transporation purposes and face stability of mechanically driven tunnels in soft ground

Kim, Seung Han 09 November 2010 (has links)
With the advent of the large diameter tunnel boring machine (TBM), mechanically driven large diameter tunnel is becoming a more attractive option. During operation, a large diameter tube allows for stacked deck configuration with shafts dropped to platform level (no station caverns). The extensive information has been compiled on innovative TBM tunneling projects such as the Barcelona Line 9, where the concept of continuous station has been used for the first time, stormwater management and roadway tunnel in Malaysia, where the floodwater bypass tunnel and the road tunnel are incorporated in a single bore tunnel. The decision making process that led to the construction of large bore tunnel is also presented. A detailed study has been carried out to determine the necessary face support pressure in drained conditions (with ideal membrane), and undrained conditions. The effects of tunnel diameter, cover-to-diameter ratio, at-rest lateral earth pressure coefficient, and soil shear strength parameters on the local and global stability of the excavation face of mechanically-driven tunnels have been investigated. The relation between the face support pressure and the calculated tunnel face displacement gave the minimum face support pressure that should be applied on the tunnel face to avoid abrupt movement of the tunnel face. Simple expressions have been developed for the support pressure as a function of tunnel diameter, cover depth, lateral earth pressure coefficient, and soil strength parameters. The required face support pressures are compared to the analytical solutions available from the literature. It has been found that analytical stability solutions generally underestimate the required face support pressure and excessive deformation will take place in the ground near the tunnel heading when these solutions are used. By using plastic limit analysis, a rigid and deformable prism-and-wedge model has been developed; in undrained conditions, upper bound solutions against collapse load are derived for face pressure. Deformable blocks enabled to take into account the effect of non-uniform support pressure due to the unit weight of the supporting medium. The upper bound solution derived as a function of tunnel diameter and cover depth, normalized undrained shear strength ratio, and unit weight of the ground and the supporting medium was compared with a solution available from the literature. Largest face support pressure was obtained when the uniform face support pressure was applied and it was smallest when identical unit weight was used for the ground and the supporting medium. / text

Formula pricing on the Russian market of large diameter pipes

Н., Grebenshikov, D. N. January 2020 (has links)
High risks of price wars cause unfavorable conditions on the Russian market of large diameter pipes, which confirms the relevance of the research topic. The purpose of the master's thesis is to develop a formula for calculating the price of a large diameter pipe for the Russian market, which will contribute to the stabilization of the situation. The price calculated using the formula can take into account various market indicators. If it is as close as possible to current market trends, and also reduces the risks of unjustified price changes, then this mechanism is the best way to regulate the market for large diameter pipes. Educational and research literature, statistical data of the Federal state statistics service, and data on accounting and management reports of enterprises were used as sources of information.

Análise de provas de carga dinâmica em tubulões a céu aberto no campo experimental de fundações da EESC/USP / Analysis of dynamic loading test in large diameter bored piles, in the experimental field of EESC

Soares, Fábio Lopes 13 March 2003 (has links)
The concept of an isolated foundation element in large diameter bored pile is presented and 10 dynamic loading tests with increased energy are analysed. The interpretation of the dynamic loading tests has been proceeded with due consideration of the results of static loading tests performed previously. The loading tests have been carried out in large diameter bored piles founded in Rio Claro and Itaqueri soil formation, situated in the experimental foundation field of USP/EESC. The analyses are based on resistance x displacement curves and selected graphics illustrating the development of mobilized resistance with increasing applied energy during a dynamic loading test (PDA methodology and CAPWAP type analysis). The influence of previous inundation in soil mass and suction variation are also analysed, as well as the effect of test repetition and variability in SPT and CPT results. The results obtained with the dynamic loading tests with increasing energy revealed a distinct behaviour of the isolated foundation system for each level of applied energy, showing that the loading history is an aspect of extreme relevance to an adequate analysis of the dynamic tests perfomed.

Static loading tests instrumented in large diameter drilled piles.

França, Danilo Costa de 30 September 2011 (has links)
The objective of this Msc Thesis is to study the behavior of large diameter drilled pile in the construction of a shopping mall in Sao Paulo. The piles were subjected to axial compression loads and instrumented in depth. Widely known theories were used to interpret load vs settlement curves, obtaining such results as transfer loads diagrams along the shaft and lateral friction unit, ES product and stiffness grafics of tested piles and two modified Cambefort Laws. This paper aims to achieve parameters that will allow a reduction in pile lengths and to present results that will aid designers in the design of large diameter drilled pile, provided that the needed care is taken when extrapolating results to soils of different geological origins from those presented here.

Atrito lateral e resistência de base em tubulões a céu aberto em solos colapsíveis / Skin friction and base resistance of large diameter bored piles in collapsible soils

Santos, Túlia Ribeiro da Silva 13 June 2001 (has links)
This work presents results of static load tests, in large diameter bored piles, with measurements of soil moisture content in an unsatured collapsible soil, considered as representative of the middle - west region of the State of São Paulo, Brazil. Ten load tests were performed at Foundation Experimental Field of the EESC/USP, with and without wetting of the pit and the with quick maintained load (QML). In the large diameter bored piles were introduction, between the base and the shaft, an layer of \"isopor\", to separate the skin friction and the base resistance, during the static load tests. The gathered data allowed an assessment of the influence the soil suction, of the soil soaking and the effect between excavation and concrete in the behaviour these isolate elements of foundation.
