An integrated laser cladding and stress improvement for enhancing surface propertiesMartinez Hurtado, Alonso January 2016 (has links)
Laser cladding is a process that is used to improve the properties of a metal surface. The properties in question may include hardness, wear-, corrosion- and/or fatigue-resistance. The process involves fusing a thin layer of additional metal to the original surface, using a laser as the heat source. Unfortunately, residual stresses are generated due to the rapid and highly localised thermal expansion and contraction that occur during the heating-melting-solidification-cooling cycle. These residual stresses can have a detrimental effect on the final performance of the clad component, especially with respect to corrosion resistance. Detrimental tensile residual stresses can be mitigated through the use of post-processing techniques such as laser shock peening (LSP). LSP is a process that uses a pulsed laser to generate intense spots of recoil pressure on a surface, thereby introducing compressive residual stresses. Post weld heat treatment (PWHT) is another process that could be also used in laser cladding in order to relieve tensile residual stresses. In this work, laser cladding was carried out by depositing a clad layer of AISI grade 316L stainless steel on to either a S275 steel substrate or an AISI grade 316L stainless steel substrate, using different process parameters. The hardness and residual stresses in the overlay and substrate were assessed for each laser clad sample before and after being treated with LSP and PWHT. The corrosion rate and microstructure were also assessed in each case. The novelty of this work is two-fold. Firstly, to the author's knowledge, it is the first study that attempts to link process parameters to both the residual stresses and the corrosion performance of austenitic stainless steel overlays deposited by laser cladding. The second novel aspect is based on the application of both LSP and PWHT to the deposited overlay in order to investigate whether an improvement in the mechanical properties and the corrosion resistance can be realised. In this study, tensile residual stresses were generated in the clad layers. However, the magnitude of the residual stresses did not appear to be particularly sensitive to the deposition parameters. Indeed, it was found that the number of layers that is deposited is more important than the choice of process parameters. LSP was effective in reducing the tensile residual stresses and in fact it introduced compressive stresses to all the samples that were treated. In contrast, PWHT only led to satisfactory stress relief when the AISI grade 316L stainless steel was deposited on to a matching substrate material. This was related to the fact that a difference between the thermal expansion coefficients of the overlay and substrate led to the development of significant tensile residual stresses on cooling down after PWHT. The corrosion tests on the clad coupons led to the development of pits and cracks. However, after LSP only pits were found, without any sign of cracking, for the test durations that were investigated owing to the fact that compressive stresses were generated. Similar results were found after PWHT for the clad samples in which the overlay material matched the substrate material. However, signs of cracking were observed after PWHT in samples where AISI grade 316L stainless steel was deposited on to an S275 steel substrate due to tensile residual stresses remaining within the overlay. This result suggests that there may be little benefit in carrying out PWHT for components in which grade 316L stainless steel is deposited on to a steel substrate. In contrast, there appear to be clear benefits associated with carrying out LSP in order to mitigate the residual stresses and retard the onset of cracking.

A Non-Contact Technique for Direct Strain Measurement Using Laser Speckle Spectral DensitySheikhrezai, Reza M. 01 January 1984 (has links) (PDF)
When an optically rough surface is illuminated by laser, a grainy pattern is produced at a distance away from the surface, which is known as laser speckle pattern. This pattern is random in intensity with its grains separated by an average amount controlled by the intermediate optical system or the diameter of the illuminated area of the surface in absence of an optical system. It has been shown that the grain spacing of such pattern may be correlated to yield a singly-peaked power spectral density of an intensity ensemble which is found by spatial ensemble averages. This correlation holds only if the sampling is done in a plane referred to as the constant plane. On an average basis such a characteristic peak persists with an in-plane rigid-body motion of the test object and within a uniformly rough area of the surface. The behavior of such peak with an induced in-plane strain is shown to be non-linear and of second order for the test range, when frequency values of such peak is plotted versus strain. Further, the slope of such curve changes sign when a strain of opposite sign is sensed. Finally, the best responses were obtained when no intermediate optical system was employed in the observation field.

Études expérimentales de lasers microchips à émission continue mono-fréquence à 553 nm et à 561 nm, de puissance supérieure à 200 mW / Study of microchip lasers based on Nd : YAG frequency-doubled, diode-pumped and emitting in continuous single-frequency at 553 nm or 561 nm with an output power exceeding 200 mWChauzat, Corinne 08 January 2014 (has links)
Replacement of dye lasers emitting in the range 550-570 nm, using solid state lasers, is a real industrial issue. There are many applications both in the field of biomedical research than in metrology. Some solutions have been developed for 561 nm and 553 nm. However, they do not provide fully integrated lasers emitting single-frequency continuous Gaussian beam with a power equal or up to 200 mW. In this work, we propose a theoretical and experimental study of solid monolithic cavity lasers based on Nd:YAG diode-pumped, frequency-doubled intra-cavity, using a non-linear crystal of KTP. These cavities, consisting of several crystals, are contacted by molecular adhesion. They contain no optical layout of the beams and they have the particularity of including a double Lyot filter. We present the results obtained with those cavities emitting at 561 nm for powers greater than 300 mW. Then, after a statistical study and analysis of test results of these cavities in the long term (> 6000 hours), we discuss about the potential problems of reliability and we suggest areas for improvement. For the first time, we show that the line at 1106 nm of the Nd: YAG can oscillate in this type of cavity. Then we demonstrate the feasibility of a compact single-frequency laser at 553 nm continuously, emitting a power of 200 mW to 500 mW with a conversion efficiency of pump / visible laser of about 19%. Finally, we show that it is possible, in cavities of this type, to oscillate the Raman lines from the lines of the fundamental and doubled frequency in intra-cavity. We open the door to a whole family of solid state lasers emitting in the range of 540-600 nm.

Laser Cutting Machine: Justification of initial costsNagaraja, Dwarakish 05 1900 (has links)
The Industrial Laser is firmly established in metalcutting as the tool of choice for many applications. The elevator division of Montgomery KONE Inc., in an effort to move towards quality, ontime, complete deliveries and 100% customer satisfaction, decided to invest in new equipment to improve manufacturing processes. A huge investment is proposed for a laser-cutting machine. It is the responsibility of Manufacturing Engineering to direct the management by justifying its benefits, which includes payback time and financial gains. Factors such as common line cutting, automated material handling system and cutting time were involved in justification of the initial cost of a laser-cutting machine. Comparative statistics on appropriate factors accurately determine and justify the initial cost of a laser-cutting machine.

Laser Ablation Laser Induced Fluorescence for the Sensitive Detection of Heavy Metals in WaterGodwal, Yogesh 11 1900 (has links)
Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy LIBS is a fast non-contact technique for the
analysis of the elemental composition using spectral information of the emission from
a laser-induced plasma. For the LIBS studies in this thesis the focus has been in using
very low energy, microjoule pulses in order to give high spatial resolution and minimize
the laser system requirements. This is a regime that we refer to as microLIBS. Under
such conditions it is important to maximize the signal detected to give the lowest
limit of detection LOD possible.
One technique to improve the signal to noise ratios is by coupling LIBS with
Laser Induced Fluorescence. This is a technique where the _rst pulse creates a vapor
plume and the second pulse tuned to a resonant absorption line of the species of
interest re-excites the plume. We term this technique as Laser ablation Laser Induced
Fluorescence LA-LIF. We have been investigating the performance of LA-LIF at low
pulse energies (_ 1 mJ for both pulses) for the detection of elemental contaminants in
water. This technique allows reasonable performance compared to high energy singlepulse
LIBS, but at a much reduced total energy expenditure. This allows LODs in the
parts per billion range ppb range which typically cannot be obtained with low energy
single pulse probing of the systems. This approach or exceeds the sensitivities which
can be obtained with many shots using much larger energy systems. In this thesis
we investigated the performance of LIBS at low pulse energies for the detection of
Pb as a contaminant in water. An LOD of 70 ppb was obtained for an accumulation
of 100 shots with the ablation laser pulse energy of 250 _J and an excitation laser
pulse energy of 8 _J. A systematic study of the detector conditions was made for the
system for the detection of Pb. Scaling laws for the LOD in terms of the pump and
probe energies were measured and also the e_ect of detector gain, the gate delay and
the gate width were studied.
In this thesis LIBS and LA-LIF were also used to analyze ultralow volumes of
analyte in liquids in microuidic geometries. LIBS was applied for the detection of
Na in liquid droplets in a microuidic system. The detection of Na as low as 360
femtograms was demonstrated for 100 shots integrated in this system. An LOD of 7
ppm for Pb for 100 shot accumulation was demonstrated using the LA-LIF technique
on an 18 _m diameter microdroplet.
To study the laser interaction with the water targets the MEDUSA one dimensional
hydrocode was used. The propagation of the shockwave and plume dynamics
were studied using this modeling code. The expansion of the plume was studied and
compared to experimentally measured values and to physical models for blast wave
expansion and stagnation.
Two preconcentration techniques were also studied, one of which used a wood-chip
as a substrate to absorb the analyte liquid and wick the salt on to the surface for
analysis and the other used an electroplating technique to plate the analyte metal as
a thin _lm on a substrate metal used as a cathode. The electroplating method for
preconcentration was also studied using a microchip laser and a LOD of 6.4 ppb for
Pb in water was obtained for an accumalation of 200,000 shots. / Photonics and Plasmas
