The Cartography of Borders in Ana Teresa Torres’s “Doña Inés vs. Oblivion”

By 1992, due to the Fifth Centennial of the Conquest, an increase in the publication of historic novels were taking place. As a consequence this editorial phenomenon caused the incorporation of new voices to a new tradition of genre already broaden established in Spanish America own to a long tradition of writers. Just at that moment Doña Inés contra el olvido, written by the Venezuelan writer Ana Teresa Torres, came up as an alternative version of telling the history from a woman perspective. Doña Inés, the responsible voice of the story, struck up a monologue in order to recount the Venezuelan history asking to absent speakers already dead. As a main topic the novel explains the dispute on the Curiepe lands, so it poses the conflicts to get the power between two groups or castes to gain the territory control along the three centuries. This research has three specific aims: to put this novel into context within the wide tradition of this particular subgenre, the historical novel; in second place to introduce it in the renovation fulfilled by master pieces of female authorship; and as a last commitment, to describe and analyze the construction of the natioñs account. In fact, Curiepe is turned into a metaphorical territory to ascertain the power in dispute. Here the authoritarian discourse is questioned as well as the significance the minority resistance groups has had when they confront the power ones. Though Doña Inés lets see it is possible to imagine the future when the past is imagined, the final historical pact between these two groups turned irony because it reflects a society which emerges as a result of an established violence from the power. At the same time, in this act of give in and reconcile, the historical sense is lost in the minority group struggle, led by a free slave. That is the reason why the novel also shows a pessimistic view of the history because this conflict persists as a narrative continuity in the Continent history.

‘Oh! The One Who Covers Her Face / Surely Is Not Worth Much’: Identity and Social Criticism in Transatlantic Hispanic Culture (1520–1860)

In 1639, a law prohibiting women any head covering; veil, mantilla, manto for example, is promulgated for the fifth time in the Iberian Peninsula under the penalty of losing the garment, and subsequently incurring more severe punishments. Regardless of these edicts this social practice continued. My dissertation investigates the cultural representation of these covered women (tapadas) in Spain and the New World in a vast array of early modern literary, historical and legal documents (plays, prose, and regal laws, etc.). Overall, critics associate the use of the veil in the Spanish territories with religious tendencies and overlook the social component of women using the veil to simply explain it as a mere fashion practice. In my dissertation, I argue that it is more than just a garment; the veil was used by women to make political statements, thereby challenging the restrictive gender and identity boundaries of their epoch. A critical analysis of early modern historical and legal peninsular texts and close-readings of Golden Age literary works, together with colonial cultural productions, allow me to identify patterns in how the tapadas were represented both artistically and culturally. Accordingly, my project attempts to reassess the significance of the tapadas in Hispanic culture for 350 years and demonstrate how their resilience to stop using the veil publicly is symptomatic of the absolutist monarchy inefficiencies in imposing social control. I move away from the tendency to investigate works including tapadas exclusively, and I conclude by reconstructing more accurately their cultural impact on the social dynamics in Spain as well as the New World.

Writing Practices: Spatiality and Identity in Women’s Colonial Letters (Río de la Plata During the 16th and 17th Centuries)

The importance of the letter as a means for social, personal and intellectual expression for humanists has been highlighted in various studies. For those studies, its value resides in its effectiveness in responding more directly to the presence of a new pool of readers giving rise to a new cultural type, transforming it into the emblematic genre of the humanists. I am interested in considering the influence of epistolary models in the New World, because, as these models were transferred to a new context, they acquired new forms that responded to the needs of communication, representation, symbolization and, finally, a new rhetoric. For the purposes of this dissertation, I will depart from the conception of the letter in the New World as a "polysynthetic" genre; that is to say, inasmuch as I wish to respond to the plurality of communicative needs that arose from the new contexts that were unforeseen by the humanist rhetoric, I will consider the letters from the New World as emerging from and forming part of other genres: accounts, petitions, diaries, among others. The starting point for this dissertation is the thorough reading and analysis of eleven unpublished letters, all written by women, currently located at the Archivo General de Indias in Seville and sent from the Rio de la Plata during the XVI and XVII centuries. In my investigation, I intend to demonstrate how the authors used the writing of such documents as an empowering practice. Secondly, I will prove that these first epistles, written from America, do not necessarily belong to the ars epistolandi, but to the ars dictaminis. Furthermore, this change in distinction requires a critical review of the current state of classical letters. Finally, I maintain that these letters provide a space for the emergence of the authors' identity. In other words, I understand and ground the conclusions of this work on the fact that space culturally shapes gender, but that gender acts in the production of such spaces as well. The participation of female authors by means of these letters merges them with that spatiality in a process both of production and reproduction, since, as a conscience building act, the "I" is turned into text in order to discuss on/about the space.

Consumo, consumismo y afines: un itinerario en las narrativas de Argentina y de Chile

This dissertation explores how Argentinian and Chilean narratives have depicted consumer society, consumption, consumerism, and related subjects such as capitalism, ideology, alienation, etc. It seeks to demonstrate that these topics have been significant in the productions of both canonical and non-canonical authors for centuries. Thus, I present an “itinerary of consumption” starting in the late 19th century with two novels of the Ciclo de la Bolsa (Stock Market Cycle), which show characters practicing what Thorstein Veblen calls “conspicuous consumption,” a key feature of what later has been called consumer society. The itinerary ends in 2018 with a novel that demonstrates that today consumption and consumerism play an important role even in art appreciation. Establishing the itinerary allows me, on the one hand, to corroborate the fundamental presence of consumption, consumerism, and related topics in a wide range of literary works and, on the other hand, to analyze how the depictions of these issues varied according to contexts in which the novels situate their plots. I argue that since these topics are crucial in Latin American societies and, therefore, in the establishment of personal identity and social relations, it is important to take them into consideration when analyzing the construction of literary characters, the actions they take, and the thoughts they express. Reading literary works from the point of view of their depictions of consumption and consumerism is not common in Latin American literary criticism; hence, it is a promising field of study. / 2026-02-05T00:00:00Z

Two Terms of the Cuban Counterpoint: Transculturation in the Poetry of Nicolás Guillén

The history of Latin America and the Caribbean was irreversibly altered by the arrival of the conquistadors, destruction of native civilizations and implementation of colonialism for hundreds of years. However, Spain also introduced the high culture of the baroque to Latin America and the Caribbean, which mixed with the cultures of native and African peoples, creating new, distinct forms of literary expression. Subsequent post-colonial cultural movements attempted to explore and reaffirm the variety of cultures that shaped both regions, including the movement of Afrocubanismo in Cuba, which occurred from 1910-1940. Afrocubanismo was a movement intended to incorporate African folklore and music into traditional modes of art. While many authors and artists were instrumental to Afrocubanismo, Nicolás Guillén is considered to be the most influential author of the movement, due to his new and inventive style of poetry that incorporated both Spanish and African influences. This study will demonstrate how Guillén’s use of traditional poetic forms, the son and portrayal of everyday Afro-Cuban life reveal his vision for a post-colonial, transcultured Cuban society, rather than a Cuba subject to colonialism and acculturation.

Canibalias y calibanias chicanas, migrantes y eulatinas: la postoccidentalista producción literaria y cultural en los Estados Unidos y América Latina

abstract: Anchored to the Mexican-American and U.S. Latino historical experience, this dissertation examines how a Latino and Chicano Canibalia manifests itself in literary and cultural production across the different literary periods of the Southwest and the United States as formulated by Luis Leal and Ilan Stavans: Colonization: 1537-1810, Annexations: 1811-1898, Acculturation: 1898-1945, Upheaval: 1946-1979, and the fifth period, Into the Mainstream: 1980-Present. Theoretically, the study is primarily based on the work Canibalia: canibalismo, calibanismo, antropofagia cultural y consumo en América Latina (2005) by Carlos Jauregui. This Canibalia claims that the symbol Caliban, a character taken from the drama The Tempest (1611) by William Shakespeare and interpreted in Calibán (1971) by Roberto Fernández Retamar, is an indispensable reference that, today, links the discourse on Colonial Studies in Latin America and, for us, also in the Mexican-American Southwest. To particularize Jáuregui’s critical perspective, we draw from the work The Dialectics of Our America: Genealogy, Cultural Critique, and Literary History (1990) by José David Saldívar, whose call for a School of Caliban not only brings together all subaltern subject positions but marks the value of the “schooling” such an institution will provide. For Saldívar, Chicano and U.S. Latino scholarship needs to be incorporated into Caliban Studies due to a shared anti-imperial resistance. We also rely on the theoretical work Local Histories/Global Designs: Coloniality, Subaltern Knowledges, and Border Thinking (2000) by Walter Mignolo, which links colonial difference to border thinking and examines contemporary dialogues on Orientalism, Occidentalism, and post-Occidentalism with regards to Latin American, Chicano, and U.S. Latino cultures. Our study interprets such works as I Am Joaquín (1967) by Rodolfo “Corky” Gonzales, the performances of Guillermo Gómez-Peña, the novels Peregrinos de Aztlán (1974) by Miguel Méndez and Entre la sed y el desierto (2004) by Óscar L. Cordero, US Latino films like Balseros (2002) and Which Way Home (2009), the Mexican film Acorazado (2010), and Chicano and US Latino poetry that features the literary symbol examined under our critical approach; in turn, we have learned that the Chicano and Latino Canibalia is a collection of cannibal discourses which have as an objective stereotyping civilians of Mexican and Latin American descent in the United States. Our critical discourse provides an understanding of today’s complex cultural ties between all countries. A Chicano and Latino Canibalia serves as a bridge of understanding regarding the discursive silences in the history of the United States and Latin America as well as the world. Se fundamenta en la obra teórica Canibalia: canibalismo, calibanismo, antropofagia cultural y consumo en América Latina (2005) de Carlos Jáuregui.
