This dissertation traces imperialist ideology as it functions in the texts of two radical Liberal critics of imperialism, Leonard Woolf and E. M. Forster. In chapters two and three respectively, I read Woolf's autobiographical account Growing and his novel The Village in the Jungle to examine connections between "nonfictional" and "fictional" writing on colonialism. The autobiography's fictive texture compromises its claims to facticity and throws into relief the problematic nature of notions of truth and fact in colonialist epistemology and discursive systems.

Let $V$ be a finite-dimensional vector space over a field $\mathbb{K}$, and let \text{End}$(V)$ be the set of all $\mathbb{K}$-linear transformations from $V$ to $V$. A {\em Leonard system} on $V$ is a sequence \[(\A ;\B; \lbrace E_i\rbrace_{i=0}^d; \lbrace E^*_i\rbrace_{i=0}^d),\] where $\A$ and $\B $ are multiplicity-free elements of \text{End}$(V)$; $\lbrace E_i\rbrace_{i=0}^d$ and $\lbrace E^*_i\rbrace_{i=0}^d$ are orderings of the primitive idempotents of $\A $ and $\B$, respectively; and for $0\leq i, j\leq d$, the expressions $E_i\B E_j$ and $E^*_i\A E^*_j$ are zero when $\vert i-j\vert > 1$ and nonzero when $\vert i-j \vert = 1$. % Leonard systems arise in connection with orthogonal polynomials, representations of many nice algebras, and the study of some highly regular combinatorial objects. We shall use the construction of Leonard pairs of classical type from finite-dimensional modules of $\mathit{sl}_2$ and the construction of Leonard pairs of basic type from finite-dimensional modules of $U_q(\mathit{sl}_2)$. Suppose $\Phi:=(\A ;\B; \lbrace E_i\rbrace_{i=0}^d; \lbrace E^*_i\rbrace_{i=0}^d)$ is a Leonard system. For $0 \leq i \leq d$, let \[ U_i = (E^*_0V+E^*_1V+\cdots + E^*_iV)\cap (E_iV+E_{i+1}V+\cdots + E_dV). \] Then $U_0$, $U_1$, \ldots, $U_d$ is the {\em split decomposition of $V$ for $\Phi$}. % The split decomposition of $V$ for $\Phi$ gives rise to canonical matrix representations of $\A$ and $\B$ in terms of useful parameters for the Leonard system. %These canonical matrix representations for $\A$, $\B$ are respectively lower bidiagonal and upper bidiagonal. In this thesis, we consider when certain Leonard systems share a split decomposition. We say that Leonard systems $\Phi:=(\A ;\B; \lbrace E_i\rbrace_{i=0}^d; \lbrace E^*_i\rbrace_{i=0}^d)$ and $\hat{\Phi}:=(\hat{\A} ;\hat{\B}; \lbrace \hat{E}_i\rbrace_{i=0}^d; \lbrace \hat{E^*}_i\rbrace_{i=0}^d)$ are {\em friends} when $\A = \hat{\A}$ and $\Phi$, $\hat{\Phi}$ have the same split decomposition. % We obtain Leonard systems which share a split decomposition by constructing them from closely related module structures for either $\mathit{sl}_2$ or $U_q(\mathit{sl}_2)$ on $V$. We then describe friends by a parametric classification. In this manner we describe all pairs of friends of classical and basic types. In particular, friendship is not entirely a property of isomorphism classes.

There are many archival photography collections that are forgotten or ignored because of their lack of accompanying written documentation. Despite this, these collections have tremendous value which can be discovered through alternate methods of research and analysis. This thesis provides an example of how to approach and research such collections by examining the work of Ernest William Albert Crocker, whose business, Trio Photograph and Supply Company, operated in Victoria from 1908-1946. It presents an introductory review of Crocker's life and work from what he left behind in the Trio Photograph Collection which consists of over 20,000 images. This thesis examines his photographs from both documentary and aesthetic perspectives and constructs a comparison between Crocker's work and that of a contemporary Vancouver photographer, Leonard Frank (1870-1944). It establishes an appreciation for the significance of the Trio Photograph Collection within the contexts of social and photo-history and lays the foundation from which any future research of Crocker' s photographs can begin. / Graduate

Léonard Lessius was a Flemish Jesuit whose published works engaged in the most pressing economic, theological, and philosophical debates of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth-centuries. Highly-respected for both his profound intellect and his exemplary integrity and virtue, Lessius, also known as "The Prince of Philosophers" was venerated even in death. Despite his remarkable fame and influence in his own day, Lessius' philosophical contributions and legacy have been largely forgotten by modern historians. This striking lacuna in the historiography illuminates the narrow categories and concerns as well as the serious limitations of modern philosophy and the history of philosophy in particular. This report narrows in on one of these lost philosophical fields and treatises in particular, Lessius's study on diet and health, Hygiasticon (Antwerp, 1613). It uniquely, and quite literally, gets at the heart and soul of early modern philosophy: what is natural, what is the relationship between body, mind and soul, and what is necessary for health, wealth, spiritual- and self-improvement. / text

Through the study of selected works written by Earle Birney, Phyllis Webb, and Leonard Cohen, this thesis seeks to interrogate the wave of modern Canadian nationalism and culture construction that grew as a result of the loosening ties to British roots, the increasing infiltration of American influence, and the political climate following the Second World War. As the Cold War began to take root, Canada found itself amid not only a political conflict, but also a barrage of emerging mass media on a global scale. As a result of this crossfire of national voices, the Canadian culturati made efforts to join in the conversation—through national radio, film, literature, and the creation of a new flag and dictionary—but before the nation could speak, it had to answer the questions that dominated the era: Who is Canada? What is the voice of Canada? Whose voice speaks for the nation? This thesis aims to study the evolution of the answers that were given to these questions. Through the lens of nationalist theory, translation theory, and the postcolonial Gothic, this thesis traces a route from Birney’s attempt to create a nation within a perceived “lack of ghosts,” to Webb’s efforts to question the very question of nationalism, ultimately to Cohen’s illumination of the internal mechanics of national identity as he worked to reconstruct it in a movement toward the Clear Light.
