Úprava toku – Luha v Jeseníku n/Odrou / River trainning - The Luha River in Jesenik upon Odra

The object of this Master`s thesis is the river training of the Luha river in Jeseník nad Odrou. The thesis is divided into several chapters. In the theoretical introduction, the problems of the sediment flow regime are discussed. Moreover, it deals with the questions associated with the roughness in open channels and adjustment of riparian zones. As a part of the overall proposal of the flow adjustment, the hydraulically most suitable cross section in cunette is proposed. It is done with respect to the desired velocity ratios in the profile. Since the new cunette shape was established, the adjustment of vertical alignment was proposed. The thesis also contains the capacity assessment of the existing channel. Design of adjustment of flood protection measures includes mainly spatial rearrangement and increase the crest of levees with respect to the local conditions. The thesis also suggests the placement of vegetation in the riparian zones. Furhermore, the work deals with problems arising from the flow adjustment considering applicable laws and regulations of the Czech Republic. In the case of project implementation, it is necessary to evaluate these problems independently.

Subsidence Damage in Southern Arizona

From the Proceedings of the 1972 Meetings of the Arizona Section - American Water Resources Assn. and the Hydrology Section - Arizona Academy of Science - May 5-6, 1972, Prescott, Arizona / Land is subsiding over a heavily mined aquifer in south central Arizona. Subsidence damages are inventoried to help provide a basis upon which cost studies can be performed to determine actions to lessen the economic impact of these damages. Water table drawdown produces increasing loading stress by three ways: changes in bouyant support of aquifer grains, changes in water table, or both. Two types of subsidence are recognized--one-directional compression, and near surface phenomenon. Damages due to natural structures, and to man-made structures are reviewed. Agricultural damages include field releveling, ditch repair and well damage. Damages to transportational facilities include highways, bridges, pipelines, and railroads. Damages to domestic and urban structures are suggested. Questionnaires, interviews and on-site inspections were used to collect information on land subsidence damages in the study area.

Hydro-mechanical analysis of breach processes due to levee failure

La rupture des barrages et des digues en terre est susceptible d’avoir des conséquences importantes en aval et dans les zones protégées. Nous avons mené une analyse hydro-mécanique de la formation et du développement de brèche destinée à améliorer la précision des approches actuelles. Dans le cas de l’érosion interne, un modèle d’agrandissement de conduit a été proposé pour modéliser la rupture des digues et barrages en terre par écoulement concentré. Ce modèle tient compte de l’érosion du sol par un écoulement de conduit turbulent. En ce qui concerne l’élargissement de la brèche, un modèle simple d’estimation de la longueur critique d’afouillement par “headcut” est proposé, fonction de la résistance du sol à la traction. Ce modèle est en bon accord avec les résultats numériques obtenus par équilibre limite. Un modèle simplifé pour la contrainte latérale sur les parois de la brèche a ensuite été proposé. Ce modèle tient compte des écoulements secondaires. Il montre que la contrainte latérale peut être plus grande que la contrainte de fond, suivant la situation. Finalement, une expérimentation de grande dimension de rupture de barrage par erosion de conduit a été modélisée avec le modèle d’érosion de conduit proposé, et quelques composantes des modèles d’élargissement de brèche proposés. L’élargissement de la brèche par paliers a été reproduite au début du processus. Les perspectives de validation et d'application des modèles proposés sont discutées. / The failure of embankment dams and levees can have serious consequence in floodplains. Hydro-mechanical analyses of the breach processes were conducted to develop the accurate estimation of the failure of embankment dams and levees. Considering the internal erosion process, a pipe enlargement model was proposed to simulate the failure of embankment dams and levees by concentrated leak erosion. In this model, the turbulent pipe flow with erosion mechanism was employed as well as the soil erosion law. Considering the breach enlargement process, a simple headcut migration model based on the soil tensile strength was presented to simulate the critical length of the headcut. Good agreements were obtained by comparing with the limit equilibrium numerical model. A simple model was eventually proposed to simulate the lateral shear stress on the breach sides, accounting for the secondary flow. The lateral shear stress can be greater than the bottom shear stress, depending on the situation. . Finally, a large-scale test of dam failure was simulated by using the pipe enlargement and some components of the breach widening models proposed. The simulation of the pipe enlargement process had good agreement with the measured data. Both of the pipe diameter and the discharge flow were well simulated. The stepwise enlargement of the breach width was also well simulated at the beginning of the breach widening process. Validation and application prospects of the proposed models are discussed.

This article presents the hydraulic space of urban Lima in the 17th century, and the effortsof Lima’s cabildo (city council) to govern it. Based on a detailed analysis of the referencesto water in the Libros de cabildos de Lima from 1588-1700, the management of this naturalresource is examined through close consideration of the infrastructure installed andthe political authorities established. A three-pronged approach considers natural processes,infrastructure, and authorities together, to discuss three case studies: 1) the Rímac river, thelevees, and the levee commissioners, 2) the springs, the drinking water pipeline networkand the pipelines commissioners, and 3) the rains, religious processions, and San Marcelothe “lawyer of the city for the waters.” For each case study, the cabildo’s strategies for waterresource management are evaluated for success or failure. / Este artículo presenta el espacio hidráulico limeño urbano del siglo XVII y los esfuerzos delcabildo de Lima para gobernarlo. Con base en un análisis detallado de las menciones sobreel agua en los Libros de cabildos de Lima de 1588-1700 se examina el manejo de esterecurso natural a través de la instalación de infraestructura y la creación de autoridades políticas.Con una perspectiva tripartita se consideran los procesos naturales, la infraestructuray las autoridades en conjunto para discutir tres casos: 1) el río Rímac, los tajamares y loscomisarios de tajamares, 2) los puquios, la red de cañerías y los comisarios de cañerías,y 3) las lluvias, las procesiones religiosas y San Marcelo el “abogado de la ciudad para lasaguas”. En cada uno de los tres casos se evalúa la efi cacia de las estrategias del cabildopara administrar los recursos hídricos.

Dynamic Analysis of Levee Infrastructure Failure Risk: A Framework for Enhanced Critical Infrastructure Management

Current models that assess infrastructure failure risk are "linear," and therefore, only consider the direct influence attributed to each factor that defines risk. These models do not consider the undeniable relationships that exist among these parameters. In reality, factors that define risk are interdependent and influence each other in a "non-linear" fashion through feedback effects. Current infrastructure failure risk assessment models are also static, and do not allow infrastructure managers and decision makers to evaluate the impacts over time, especially the long-term impact of risk mitigation actions. Factors that define infrastructure failure risk are in constant change. In a strategic manner, this research proposes a new risk-based infrastructure management framework and supporting system, Risk-Based Dynamic Infrastructure Management System (RiskDIMS), which moves from linear to non-linear risk assessment by applying systems engineering methods and analogs developed to address non-linear complex problems. The approach suggests dynamically integrating principal factors that define infrastructure failure risk using a unique platform that leverages Geospatial Information System services and extensions in an unprecedented manner. RiskDIMS is expected to produce results that are often counterintuitive and unexpected, but aligned to our complex reality, suggesting that the combination of geospatial and temporal analyses is required for sustainable risk-based decision making. To better illustrate the value added of temporal analysis in risk assessment, this study also develops and implements a non-linear dynamic model to simulate the behavior over time of infrastructure failure risk associated with an existing network of levees in New Orleans due to diverse infrastructure management investments. Although, the framework and RiskDIMS are discussed here in the context of levees, the concept applies to other critical infrastructure assets and systems. This research aims to become the foundation for future risk analysis system implementation. / Master of Science
