This work deals with two distinct moments of the British liberal thought on economy and politics, as well as the possible links between the authors studied and their specific context. At first, we analyze the theories of Adam Smith on the English colonies, and what they would have to say about the courses taken by the British Empire. Subsequently, we focus on the performance of the Manchester School and its most vocal representative (Richard Cobden) in the political struggles of the 1840s. With this, we aim to present a brief history of the incorporation of smithian arguments about colonialism in the liberal political practices of the Victorian era / Mestrado / Ciencia Politica / Mestre em Ciência Política
