Le rendu expressif a pour objectif de développer des algorithmes qui donnent la possibilité aux utilisateurs de créer des images artistiques. Il permet non-seulement de reproduire des styles traditionnels, mais surtout de communiquer un message spécifique avec un style qui lui correspond. Dans ce manuscrit, nous proposons de nouvelles solutions pour réintroduire la forme, souvent masquée dans les images réalistes. Nous montrons tout d'abord comment extraire les informations de surface pertinentes sur des objets 3D dynamiques, en nous basant sur les caractéristiques du système visuel humain, de sorte à obtenir des informations qui fournissent des niveaux de détail automatiques tout en prenant le point de vue en compte. Dans un deuxième temps, nous utilisons ces données extraites à la surface des objets 3D pour les intégrer en temps réel dans des styles variés, allant du rendu minimaliste noir et blanc au dessin au trait, en passant par des résultats réalistes. / Expressive rendering aims at designing algorithms that give users the possibility to create artistic images. It allows to produce traditional styles, but also to convey a specific message with its corresponding style. In this thesis, we propose new solutions for enhancing shape, often hidden in realistic images. We first show how to extract relevant surface features on 3D dynamic scenes, taking the human visual system into account, in order to be able to control level-of-details. In a second step, we integrate this information in a variety of styles: minimalist black and white, realistic, or line-based renderings.

The Method Of Lines Solution Of Discrete Ordinates Method For Nongray Media

A radiation code based on method of lines (MOL) solution of discrete ordinates method (DOM) for the prediction of radiative heat transfer in nongray absorbing-emitting media was developed by incorporation of two different gas spectral radiative property models, namely wide band correlated-k (WBCK) and spectral line-based weighted sum of gray gases (SLW) models. Predictive accuracy and computational efficiency of the developed code were assessed by applying it to the predictions of source term distributions and net wall radiative heat fluxes in several one- and two-dimensional test problems including isothermal/non-isothermal and homogeneous/non-homogeneous media of water vapor, carbon dioxide or mixture of both, and benchmarking its steady-state predictions against line-by-line (LBL) solutions and measurements available in the literature. In order to demonstrate the improvements brought about by these two spectral models over and above the ones obtained by gray gas approximation, predictions obtained by these spectral models were also compared with those of gray gas model. Comparisons reveal that MOL solution of DOM with SLW model produces the most accurate results for radiative heat fluxes and source terms at the expense of computation time when compared with MOL solution of DOM with WBCK and gray gas models. In an attempt to gain an insight into the conditions under which the source term predictions obtained with gray gas model produce acceptable accuracy for engineering applications when compared with those of gas spectral radiative property models, a parametric study was also performed. Comparisons reveal reasonable agreement for problems containing low concentration of absorbing-emitting media at low temperatures. Overall evaluation of the performance of the radiation code developed in this study points out that it provides accurate solutions with SLW model and can be used with confidence in conjunction with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) codes based on the same approach.

On the design of fast and efficient wavelet image coders with reduced memory usage

Image compression is of great importance in multimedia systems and applications because it drastically reduces bandwidth requirements for transmission and memory requirements for storage. Although earlier standards for image compression were based on the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT), a recently developed mathematical technique, called Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT), has been found to be more efficient for image coding. Despite improvements in compression efficiency, wavelet image coders significantly increase memory usage and complexity when compared with DCT-based coders. A major reason for the high memory requirements is that the usual algorithm to compute the wavelet transform requires the entire image to be in memory. Although some proposals reduce the memory usage, they present problems that hinder their implementation. In addition, some wavelet image coders, like SPIHT (which has become a benchmark for wavelet coding), always need to hold the entire image in memory. Regarding the complexity of the coders, SPIHT can be considered quite complex because it performs bit-plane coding with multiple image scans. The wavelet-based JPEG 2000 standard is still more complex because it improves coding efficiency through time-consuming methods, such as an iterative optimization algorithm based on the Lagrange multiplier method, and high-order context modeling. In this thesis, we aim to reduce memory usage and complexity in wavelet-based image coding, while preserving compression efficiency. To this end, a run-length encoder and a tree-based wavelet encoder are proposed. In addition, a new algorithm to efficiently compute the wavelet transform is presented. This algorithm achieves low memory consumption using line-by-line processing, and it employs recursion to automatically place the order in which the wavelet transform is computed, solving some synchronization problems that have not been tackled by previous proposals.
