O intuito é observar como alunos brasileiros de LE lidam com a significação das palavras da língua inglesa na sua individualidade e na sua relação com as demais palavras em uma sentença, e se assim conseguem aprender a língua-alvo como aprendem sua língua materna, naturalmente, sem se preocupar com os meios. Para isso, são utilizados recursos como atividades de tradução e os dicionários bilíngües. As principais fontes do embasamento teórico os estudos sobre o papel da língua materna na aquisição de outras línguas e sobre a tradução. Esta pesquisa é do tipo descritiva, exploratória e qualitativa. Trata-se de uma pesquisa empírica, bibliográfica e experimental, com trabalhos de campo que utilizam questionários e entrevistas, registro das traduções de alunos brasileiros de LE e atividades escritas e orais com estes alunos em sala de aula por meio de observação participante. As principais conclusões são relativas à importância da tradução para a aquisição do léxico da língua em estudo, à utilização correta do dicionário bilíngüe e à valorização da língua materna e de sua cultura. _______________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This research examines the role of translation and the mother tongue in learning a foreign language, focusing on the acquisition of vocabulary. The aim is to observe how Brazilian learners deal with the meaning of English words separately and in context and to ascertain whether they can learn the foreign language the way they learnt their mother tongue, naturally, without worrying about the means. For this purpose, translation activities and bilingual dictionaries were employed. The research is based on studies of the role of the mother tongue in foreign language acquisition and translation. This research is descriptive, explorative and qualitative. It is also bibliography and experimental, using questionnaires, interviews and the translations of the Brazilian learners of foreign language. Oral and written activities were also employed with these learners in their own classroom by using participant observation. The main conclusions relate to the importance of translation in acquiring or learning the lexis of the language being studied, to adequate use of bilingual dictionaries and to appreciating the contribution of the learners’ own language and culture.
