The study of controlling pretilt angle of liquid crystal by replica molding method for fabricating the microgroove PDMS film

Kuo, Shih-Hsun 16 August 2012 (has links)
In this study, the PDMS with microgroove structure was used controlling pretilt anlge of liquid crystal. Polydimethylsiloxane, also called PDMS, is one transparent, flexible, and stable material. It was usually fabricated the flexible display and so on. Based on Groove Theory, we can create the microgroove structure with the different groove depths and the width of the lines on PDMS by Replica Molding Method, in order to controlling the pretilt anlge of liquid crystal. We used the photoresist with different thickness to developing, and then the groove will get with different depth of groove. The PDMS was injected to the surface of groove with slow motion. When the liquid-like PDMS was curing, the PDMS can readily convert into solid elastomers by cross-linking. Finally, The microgrooved PDMS structure will obtain.

Steric Interaction for Tuning Mesomorphic Properties of Dimeric Dibenzo[a,c]phenazine Discogens

Chan, Ya-chi 15 August 2012 (has links)
The dibenzo[a,c]phenazine dimers with the branched alkoxy chain of disc were synthesized simplely. We now show on the synthesis of this series of compounds which were found to exhibit mesomorphism as determined by polarized optical microscopy (POM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). These materials showed polymeso- morphism and glass formation. In our investigations, we also observed that the effects of branched chains on dibenzo[a,c]phenazine enhanced columnar liquid crystal phase stability indeed.

DIBENZO[a,c]PHENAZINE AND 2,3- DIPHENYLQUINOXALINE DISCOGENS WITH PHENANTHROLINE AND CROWN ETHER, AND FLUOROUS POLYCATENAR LIQUID CRYSTALS

Tzeng, Mei-Chun 06 September 2012 (has links)
In this PhD thesis, there are two major motifs: dibenzo[a,c]phenazine- and 2,3-diphenylquinoxaline novel discogens and fluorous polycatenar liquid crystals. The thermo properties of these new compounds were elucidated using optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and powder X-ray diffraction. In the phenanthroline series (Chapter 2), 1,10-phenanthroline core incorporated into dibenzo[a,c]phenazine structure exhibit columnar mesophases with extremely wide width. X-ray diffraction study pinpoints to that half-shaped mesogens with reduced symmetry has preferential intra-molecular parallel conformation in the mesophase. This molecule has gel ability with different solvents. In dimeric crown ether series (Chapter 3A), 2,3-diphenylquinoxaline-based mesogens containing dibenzo-18-crown-6 has hexagonal columnar mesophase with extremely narrow width. Incorporation potassium metal ion into crown moiety dramatically enhanced mesomorphic stability and for metal complexes, as side chain increases, hexagonal mesophases predominate over rectangular mesophases. Furthermore, both in hexagon or rectangle, per columnar slice consist of two molecules. All of prolonged long glassy formation up to one year at room temperature. In monomeric crown ether series (Chapter 3B), metal-free molecules fail to be mesomorphic, but complexation with lithium and sodium metals enhanced thermo stability and rectangular mesophase (C2mm) were found. Also, per columnar slice was comprised of four molecules. Last (Chapter 4), a series of tri- and tetra-catenar mesogens containing various combinations of hydrocarbon and semiperfluorocarbon chains has been prepared to elucidate the fluorophlic-fluorophobic effect on mesomorphism. Tricatenar with one terminal semiperfluoro- and two hydrocarbon chains are aligned into lamellar periodicity driven by the mutual incompatibility of the hydrocarbon and fluorocarbon portions. But unsymmetric tetracatenar mesogens show rectangular mesophase.

Experiment study of local heat transfer in a low air speed jet impinging on a oblong board in a vertical rectangle chamber by transient heat transfer method with thermochromic liquid crystal

Liao, Cheng-hao 14 August 2005 (has links)
This thesis presents the experiment study results on the local heat transfer coefficients for air jet impinging on a flat rectangle board. A transient thermochromatic liquid crystal technique is used to visualize and record isotherms on an impingement surface. The parameter studied include Reynolds number¡]Re=108,142,170¡^,jet height from the rectangular board¡]H/D=0.086,0.172,0.259,0.345,0.431,0.52¡^, and size of outlet¡]B/D=1.45,1.86,2.41¡^. The correlation of average Nusselt number is curve-fitted with Re,H/D and B/D . According to the present study, heat transfer is best when the Reynolds number is large, the jet height is small, and the outlet area is large .

A study of local heat transfer coefficients on the surface of tube row of heat exchanger by experimental technique with thermochromic liquid crystals

Yang, Tzung-Lin 21 July 2000 (has links)
In the present study, the local heat transfer coefficient over the surface of the tube row of a fin-and-tube heat exchanger is to measure. The test cases including the tube row arrangement of staggered and in-line, Reynolds number range of 2000 to 9000, and transverse tube pitch of S=2.0D, 2.5D and 2.8D, are studied and discussed. Experimental models of heat exchangers are constructed according to similarity principles. Complete distribution of local heat transfer coefficients are measured over the full surface of the tube row of a fin-and-tube heat exchanger by the transient heat transfer method with thermochromic liquid crystal used as the surface thermometer. And using micro video camera assembled in the experimental system to obtain the experimental image. Software, LCIA(Liquid Crystal Image Analysis), is used to obtain the temporal history of the surface temperature used to determined the local heat transfer coefficient. The results show that the heat transfer coefficient over the surface of the fin tube row increases with the Reynolds number. And the heat transfer coefficient for staggered cases is larger than that for in-line cases. The heat transfer coefficient on the surface of the tube row with transverse tube pitch S=2.0D is similar to the case with S=2.5D, and is larger than the case with S=2.8D. Therefore, there should exist an optimum geometry of the plate fin for a fin-and tube heat exchanger.

Experiment study for heat transfer of high density electronic multichip array by transient heat transfer method with with thermochromic liquid crystal

Lee, Hsu-Fu 10 July 2002 (has links)
Abstract This investigate is designated to the viewpoint that arrangement array of multichip modules are both staggered and in-line. Moreover, here we will discuss and compare the effects and differences of the relevantparameters caused by change Reynolds number (Re) in the experiment. In this experiment, I adopt ¡§transient heat transfer method with thermochromic liquid crystal¡¨ to research multichip modules array change to 3 ¡Ñ 5 and in-line or staggered multichip modules array to probe into the effects of over high density electronic multichip array space to length ratio to heat transfer effects when over high density electronic multichip array space to length ratio are S/L= 4/20,6/20,8/20 in the 8mm¡B12m¡B16mm respectively. The conditions are as following when every row center of chip convection heat transfer coefficient are measured: standard height to length ratio is H/L=10/20 and the height is 20mm. By observing the relationship of the varying parameters, as we can see in the analyze multichip of the experiment Re range form 1394 to 5025, we are able to improve thermal management. The experimentresule: (1) At higher values of Re the heat transfer effects are gain more, atteribute main flow field separation and reattachment is form behind the downstream modules. (2) In over high density multichip array 12S (S/L=6/20) proper are use for Re higher 4135 more than, at 8S (S/L=4/20)the lower Re can be thermocumulate in chip center. (3)When Re is 4135~5025,the heat transfer effects from staggered array is superior to in-line array. If Re range is 1394~3210,the thermal conduction is opposite. Therefore, Re is still the key that decides the efficacy of over high density electronic multichip array heat transfer effects.

The Study of Laser-Induced Holographic Grating in Azo Dye-Doped PMMA Thin Film With Liquid Crystals

Tsai, Shih-Pin 16 July 2003 (has links)
The laser-induced holographic gratings in the Azo dye-doped PMMA thin films with liquid crystal were investigated by changing the temperature of the sample, the angle of two writing beams and the rubbing. The high power Q-switch pulse laser has been used as the writing beams and the He-Ne cw laser has been used as a real-time probe beam to detect the first order diffraction singals. The grating are the results of photo-isomerization of azo dye and diffusions of liquid crystal. The model has been established to analyze the first order diffraction signals in order to understand the mechanism of grating and the effect of temperature and angle.

A Balance Circuit Employing Transformers with Serial Primary Windings for Multiple Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps

Huang, Chao-ming 11 September 2007 (has links)
For a back-light module with multiple cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs) in mid-size or large size liquid crystal displays, a balance scheme must be included to have approximately equal currents among the lamps and hence to output equal brightness. In this thesis, a half-bridge inverter is adopted to drive multiple step-up transformers with the same turn ratio, in which the primary windings of the transformers are connected in series whereas the second windings drive CCFLs in parallel. Due to the series connection of the transformer sets, the current going through the primary windings is identical, so that the lamp currents from second windings tend to be equal. A driver circuit with the proposed scheme is designed for 8 U-type cold cathode fluorescent lamps in a 32-inch backlight module. The simulation and experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the balance scheme, even for the lamps operating at low current.

Modulation of pretilt angle of liquid crystal molecule using double alignment layers

Lin, Pao-Chyuan 25 January 2008 (has links)
The liquid-crystal display because matches to the method is different , common has the TN monitor , the STN monitor , and the MVA monitor . Because these match to the method difference , therefore liquid crystal molecule pretilt angle is also different . Present liquid crystal molecule pretilt angle choice way includes : (1) Chooses the different polyimide material , after specific rubded intensity , but produces specific pretilt angle. (2) Uses low pretilt angle the polyimide material , mixes high pretilt angle according to the different proportion the polyimide material , but achieved accent of the pretilt angle changes . But in this research proposed double alignment layers , takes the first floor by homotropic layers , uses homogenous layers does for the upper formation , the surface free energy of the alignment layer can be easily controlled by adjusting the thickness of the top polyimide layer, similarly may achieve the accent to change liquid crystal molecule pretilt angle the effect . And may compensate the liquid crystal display to be insufficient because of rubbed polyimide , but has the question which dark condition is exposed , has a higher contrast gradient . Because this experiment scope accent changes the effect in liquid crystal molecule higher pretilt angle good , also kneading board various regions liquid crystal molecule pretilt the angle uniformity is higher , therefore may effectively apply on various types homotropic liquid crystal display component , for example: MVA , VA-STN , DSTN liquid-crystal display .
