The Relationship between music and literature of Liszt¡¦s Vallée d¡¦Oberman

Vallée d¡¦Obermann is the large-scale character piece of Années de Pèlerinage : Suisse. This composition was published in 1842, which was inspired by the landscape and literary works¡¦ reading while Liszt and Countess Marie d¡¦Agoult traveled to Switzerland. Its musical content is closely related to the novel Obermann by French writer Étienne Pivert de Senancour. Liszt quoted the Letter 63 and Letter 4 from the novel as the preface of Obermann. Vallée d¡¦Obermann , compensated by Byron¡¦s Childe Harold¡¦s Piligrimage. This thesis would focus on the relationship between music and literature of Liszt¡¦s Vallée d¡¦Obermann. The research includes three chapters. Chapter one will describe mainly Liszt¡¦s music career and literary background, and discuss how Liszt¡¦s writing program music is related to literature, and survey all his literature related piano works. Chapter two would introduce Senancour¡¦s life and Obermann¡¦s writing background. The unique characteristic of the novel will be explored . Chapter three, the musical analysis and interpretation parts will reveal the historical background of Vallée d¡¦Obermann, its detailed analysis of the formal structure, the compositional style, and the relevance of literary work. From scholars¡¦ view, the interpretational suggestions will be included. By studying this topic, performers will understand the connection between music and literature in Vallée d¡¦Obermann , and more listeners can really appreciate this music from their heart..
