The main support of the thesis is the analysis of the recently published letters of the author: the first volume (2011), encompassing the years 1907-1922, and the second volume (2013), covering 1923?1925. The guiding question drives to the mechanisms that made possible Hemingway to consolidate himself as an artist and create a literary revolution. Furthermore, it aims to verify if Hemingway, in the letters, seemed to be the same brutal man whose image he wanted to cultivate. The structure of the thesis has three parts. The first part, ?The Pre-revolutionary Period?, is a sort of radiography of modernist Paris, when the city acted as a magnet for a international range of artists, creating a culture of cross-fertilisation. The theoretical pillars are Malcolm Bradbury's studies about Modernism and Antonio Candido's ideas on how a stimulating milieu helps literary creation. The second part is entitled "The Revolution" and corresponds to the core of the thesis. Using his letters as the primary source of information, the system of relation and literary exchange experienced by Hemingway is examined in detail. The third part, The Post-Revolutionary Period, investigates the posthumous book of ?fictional memories? Paris a Moveable Feast, showing its troubled composition. It?s also made a comparison between the first version (1964) and the restored edition (2009), including a number of never-before-published material. The Final Consideration confirms that Paris? cultural and literary ambiance transformed Hemingway and certifies that he was a complex man, far from his one-sided public image. / Cette th?se raconte et r?interpr?te, du point de vue historique et litt?raire, la p?riode initiale (1922-1925) o? A segunda parte, intitulada ?A revolu??o?, corresponde ao cerne da tese. Examina-se, de forma minuciosa, o sistema de rela??o e interc?mbio liter?rio vivenciado por Hemingway, tomando como base sua correspond?ncia. A terceira parte, ?O per?odo p?s-revolucion?rio?, aborda o livro p?stumo Paris ? uma festa, evidenciando a conturbada produ??o do texto e seu car?ter de ?mem?rias ficcionais?. Compara-se a vers?o lan?ada em 1964 com a restored edition (2009), que traz sete cap?tulos in?ditos. Nas Considera??es Finais, ratifica-se que Paris, pela ambienta??o cultural e liter?ria, representou um ponto de inflex?o para Hemingway e tamb?m se atesta que o escritor foi um ser humano muito mais complexo do que fazia supor sua imagem p?blica.

Investiga-se como os ambientes hostis presentes no romance geram traumas que resultam em um conturbado desenvolvimento do sujeito. Henry Junior, um imigrante alemão vivendo nos Estados Unidos da América (EUA) no período entre guerras do século XX (1919-1939), tem a personalidade constituída com base em dois confrontos centrais: com o mundo exterior, representado pela nação, colegas de escola e pela família; e com o „interior‟, feito das sequelas de embates constantes, que ocasionam a repulsa da personagem por si mesma. Empregando teorias sociológicas de mobilidade para abordar o „exterior‟ e psicanalíticas para o „interior‟, este estudo busca responder como tais confrontos geram a personalidade fragmentada do protagonista, que apesar de prejudicial, fazem com que a personagem adquira consciência de seu papel no mundo e questione como a sociedade estadunidense se articula coletivamente. A descoberta da leitura e do fazer literário, fundamentais na formação de Henry Junior, são também averiguadas. Por meio de uma abordagem político-dialética, examina-se como se dá o entrelaçamento de questões pessoais do protagonista de Ham on Rye com questões históricas, de classe e de formação de grupos, possibilitando-nos maior entendimento sobre o contexto histórico-social estadunidense no entre guerras e sobre como os indivíduos dos EUA respondem a demandas da coletividade em tal período. / This dissertation identifies and analyses social, psychological and cultural conflicts between the individual and the human collectivity, depicted respectively, by Henry Junior, the main character of Charles Bukowski‟s novel Ham on Rye (1982) and the American society. It is investigated how the hostile environments within the narrative produce traumas which result in a troubled development of the subject. Henry Junior, a German immigrant living in the United States of America (USA) during the inter-war period of the last century (1919-1939), has his personality constituted on the basis of two main confrontations: with the external world, represented by nation, class mates and his family; and with the „internal‟, resulted from the constant clashes, leading to the protagonist‟s repulsion for himself. Utilizing sociological theories about mobility to approach the „external‟ and psychoanalytical for the „internal‟, this study attempts to answer how the aforementioned confrontations generate a character with a fragmented personality, which though initially harmful, make Henry Junior aware of his role in the world, impelling him to question how the American society articulates itself as a whole. The discovery of reading and writing, both fundamental in Henry Junior‟s formation, are also discussed. Through a political-dialectic approach, it is ascertained how the interweaving between Ham on Rye‟s protagonist‟s personal issues and questions of history, class and group formation happens, giving us the opportunity to understand better the America socio-historical context during the inter-war period and how the Americans respond to collective demands at such time.

At the same time, the implications of such negotiations in the lives of immigrants are relevant issues in the writing of Julia Alvarez. For this, there is the analysis of the uses of family memories as one of the main strategies immigrant writers possess to recall their identities. Moreover, this thesis will also consider the language issue for the construction of the immigrant identity insofar as bilingualism is a key factor in the negotiation the Garc?a girls must effect between their Caribbean and their American halves in order to understand where they stand in the contemporary world. In order to build a theoretical framework that supports this master s thesis, we list the works of Homi K. Bhabha (1990, 1996, 2003, 2005), Stuart Hall (2001, 2003), Julia Kristeva (1994), Salman Rushdie (1990, 1994), Sonia Torres (2001, 2003) among other contributions that were crucial to the completion of this academic research / A presente disserta??o objetiva investigar a maneira em que sujeitos diasp?ricos ficcionais da obra How the Garc?a Girls Lost their Accents (1992), de Julia Alvarez (1950 ), negociam o embate entre duas culturas a caribenha, oriunda da Rep?blica Dominicana, no Caribe, e a estadunidense, proveniente dos Estados Unidos da Am?rica, j? que aparentemente espelha a dor daqueles que se encontram divididos entre terras natais e l?nguas maternas (IYER, 1993, p. 46). As implica??es desta negocia??o na vida do imigrante s?o quest?es relevantes na escrita de Alvarez. A autora leva em considera??o o uso das mem?rias da esfera familiar como uma das estrat?gias essenciais empregadas por escritores imigrantes para rememorar sua(s) identidade(s).
