Dreams in a Northern Landscape: The Reoccupation of Canada's North

Gibson, Suzanne 01 October 2009 (has links)
The vision for this work first sprung from Farley Mowat’s book, Canada North Now, in which Mowat questions why Canada’s north has never been used for animal husbandry despite having the capacity for such a use. Harvey Payne’s study “A Feasibility Study of Northern Animal Husbandry a Land Use in Northern Manitoba,” written for the Department of Mines, Resource and Environmental Management, confirms northern Canada’s carrying capacity and consult with northern communities about the possibilities of introducing animal husbandry. The feedback provided in community meeting conducted by Payne, coupled with the initial success of reindeer husbandry in Alaska and the past success of reindeer husbandry has seen in Europe, has provided the backbone upon which this thesis is based. This work examines the natural feature and ecologies of the Northwest Territories and studies the history of the aboriginal people who call this region home. Inspired by Norval Morrisseau’s work, a series of paintings are created that explores the traditional meaning and cultural importance of life on the land. By taking a step back and looking at the principles of traditional knowledge, upon which satisfaction and pleasure are based on a close bond to ones family, and a close partnership with the land and other living beings, a proposal is made that offers an alternative lifestyle in Canada’s north. Through the introduction of reindeer husbandry it would be possible to live off the land in a manner that is more in tune with traditional values, while at the same time creating employment opportunities in northern communities. The proposal offers an alternative life style that is nomadic in nature, the design is a simple tent structure based on traditional vernacular architecture of the region, that can be manipulated to suit the users’ needs. A low-key meat industry would reshape the landscape in a positive manner through conscious consideration. The semi-permanent base of the structure would create new landmarks from which the cultural fabric can be hung. Unlike existing settlements that are based on outside ideologies, this design is intended to exist in harmony with traditional values and the existing landscape.

Exploring the Influence of Functional Status on Older Adults' Social Relationships in Assisted Living Communities

Sandhu, Navtej K 07 August 2012 (has links)
Social relationships can have considerable influence on physical and mental well-being. AL research suggests that other residents are among the most available social contacts and that co-resident relationships can affect life satisfaction, quality of life, and well-being. Although functional status influences social relationships, research has yet to provide an in-depth understanding of how cognitive and physical function affects co-resident relationships in AL. In this thesis, I present an analysis of qualitative data collected over a one-year period in two diverse settings. The thesis addressed: 1) How does functional status influence co-resident relationships? ; and 2) What factors shape its influence? Analysis was guided by principles of Grounded Theory Method. Coming together and pulling apart signifies the key finding that functional status is multi-directional, fluid, and operates in different ways in various situations and across time. Facility and resident –level factors further affect the influence of functional status on co-resident relationships.

Living Lab - En öppen innovationsmiljö

Andersson, Cristoffer, Christensson, Sebastian, Davidsson, Mikael January 2009 (has links)

Liao, Yu-ling 18 February 2005 (has links)
The purpose of this research is to study the relationship between both the characteristic of the residents and the nursing home and the changes of the ADLs of the residents. Descriptive study was designed. 35 nursing homes and theirs residents in Kaoshiung City were be the sample and 34 questionnaires of the nursing home were returned. Residents¡¦ questionnaire were interviewed by trained personnel twice (pre and post), on June and December 2001 respectively. 310 residents including 141 male, 169 female, average age 72.94 were interviewed. Structural questionnaire was used as the tool, organization¡¦s questionnaire consists of the type of organization, size, admission rate , resignation rate. Resident¡¦s questionnaire including demographic data, Katz Index of ADLs, health status, pressure sore etc. Data analysis including descriptive analysis, T-test, Anova, Pearson relation analysis and linear regression analysis. The result shown that 86.2% of the residents¡¦ ADLs severely dependent on others help. T-Test shown that male has better ADLs than female, widow has better ADLs than couple ¡]P¡Õ0.05¡^. but shown no significant of changes of ADLs. Age, sickness and ADLs and changes of ADLs shown no significant results. On the other hand, the relationship between the characteristic the nursing home and the changes of the ADLs of the residents shown the government aided and ¤½¥ßor°]¹Îªk¤Hnursing home has better changes of ADLs¡]P¡Õ0.01¡^. The greater the size of the organization the better of the ADLs changes, private sector and affliated nursing home shown no significant results of the ADLs changes. Pressure sore is the important index of the quality care of the long term care organization, research sectors always take it as the routine surveillance. This study consisted of 31 cases of pressure sore (10%),¤½¥ßor°]¹Îªk¤Hnursing home has a low incidence of pressure sore, the higher the bed using rate, the worse of the ADLs changes, the higher of the high incidence of the pressure sore, but there is no difference between the resignation rate and the incidence of the pressure sore. The results of this study may help the clinical care-taker to design different care targets in order to help to recover and to improve the ability of ADLs by the characteristic of the residents. Moreover, study of the characteristic of nursing home and effects of the changes of the ADLs of the residents may act as suggestion to the manager and the administrator who may take the different characteristic of the organization into consideration when making policy to improve or to further investment and expansion of the organization.

Cheng, Chih-cheng 13 February 2008 (has links)
Recently, both Japan and South Korea put efforts on the concept of ¡§ubiquitous¡¨ & ¡§Intelligent Living Spaces¡¨; therefore, the ¡§Intelligent Living Spaces Industry¡¨ which takes various related or non-related industries¡¦ cooperation comes out. Among these cooperating industries, Taiwan possesses some advantages on IT Hardware Industry. Viewing on this, this study would like to benchmark the successful experiences in both Japan and South Korea to Taiwan, to make Intelligent Living Spaces Industry develop well in Taiwan, and further to make the associated industries¡¦ development flourish with Taiwan¡¦s advantages on IT Hardware Industry. Also, for no matter in Taiwan, Japan or South Korea, the government plays the most important role on the development of Intelligent Living Spaces Industry, this study then takes Diamond Model of Porter to analyze the development of Intelligent Living Spaces Industry in Taiwan, Japan and South Korea, expecting to absorb the successful experiences from Japan and South Korea for the benchmarking. This study makes the analyses through the four scopes¡Xfactors conditions, demand conditions, related and supporting industries, firm strategy and structure and rivalry, expecting to come out the developing strategy of Intelligent Living Spaces Industry through the aspect of the government and the industry. Finally, based on the Porter¡¦s Diamond Model, this study found that Taiwan still have some advantages on IT Hardware Industry, but needs to put more efforts on IT Software Industry and the professionals training, and even to reinforce the communication and cooperation among the associated industries, and then Intelligent Living Spaces Industry would flourish in Taiwan.
