The use of ambient audio to increase safety and immersion in location-based games

KURCZAK, JOHN JASON 01 February 2012 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to propose an alternative type of interface for mobile software being used while walking or running. Our work addresses the problem of visual user interfaces for mobile software be- ing potentially unsafe for pedestrians, and not being very immersive when used for location-based games. In addition, location-based games and applications can be dif- ficult to develop when directly interfacing with the sensors used to track the user’s location. These problems need to be addressed because portable computing devices are be- coming a popular tool for navigation, playing games, and accessing the internet while walking. This poses a safety problem for mobile users, who may be paying too much attention to their device to notice and react to hazards in their environment. The difficulty of developing location-based games and other location-aware applications may significantly hinder the prevalence of applications that explore new interaction techniques for ubiquitous computing. We created the TREC toolkit to address the issues with tracking sensors while developing location-based games and applications. We have developed functional location-based applications with TREC to demonstrate the amount of work that can be saved by using this toolkit. In order to have a safer and more immersive alternative to visual interfaces, we have developed ambient audio interfaces for use with mobile applications. Ambient audio uses continuous streams of sound over headphones to present information to mobile users without distracting them from walking safely. In order to test the effectiveness of ambient audio, we ran a study to compare ambient audio with handheld visual interfaces in a location-based game. We compared players’ ability to safely navigate the environment, their sense of immersion in the game, and their performance at the in-game tasks. We found that ambient audio was able to significantly increase players’ safety and sense of immersion compared to a visual interface, while players performed signifi- cantly better at the game tasks when using the visual interface. This makes ambient audio a legitimate alternative to visual interfaces for mobile users when safety and immersion are a priority. / Thesis (Master, Computing) -- Queen's University, 2012-01-31 23:35:28.946

Megalith Grave Escape : Using escape room game mechanics for cultural heritage sites

Vaske, Kristofer January 2019 (has links)
This report documents the development of a concept and prototype for a mobile application with the purpose of making the megalith graves surrounding the town of Falköping more engaging and interactive for visitors. Because of the limitations of working with heritage sites that cannot be altered to support a gaming experience, the usage of escape room game mechanics is explored. Because escape room games depend on the user's observation and exploration of their environment, they serve as a usable inspiration for applications with the purpose of making visitors experience a location in a similar way. The prototype developed for the project contains puzzles designed for four different megalith grave sites which were then tested with groups of children and parents playing together.

Design and development of a mobile editor for location-based games

Lopez-Romero Guijarro, Rodrigo 09 October 2014 (has links)
In the present project I propose to describe the design, development and implementation of mobile application TaggingCreaditor. TaggingCreaditor, as its name suggests, is a tool that allows the creation and edition of content for collaborative location-based mobile games, i.e., for the called 'Tagging games', whose physical elements are identified with tags such as a QR code or RFID code tags. The application has been developed for both desktop computers and mobile devices. In this paper the editor for the mobile devices will be presented. Mobile technologies play an increasingly important role in our lives, so that it is reasonable that new ideas come up to take advantage of this technology. An interesting example is the collaborative location-based mobile games that have the great advantage that they can be used for both entertainment and learning. Examples of collaborative location-based games are MuseumScrabble or CityScrabble, of which a study will be carried out prior to the design of the content editor. The problem is that there are plenty of locations where you can play many of the existing location-based games, but we do not have a generic tool that facilitates the creation of content. This is what comes to solving TaggingCreaditor: creating content for these games so that any developer can operate his game at any location in the world. Even, a school teacher could use this tool to create content for their students in a museum to which they will visit. Therefore, this application could be considered as a useful supporting utility for collaborative location-based mobile games such as MuseumScrabble or CityScrabble mentioned before. Among the highlights and strengths of the application, we find that it is a generic and collaboration tool. First, the application is designed with the idea that it can be used by a large number of mobile location-based games, so it is a generic tool. And, secondly, the content editor has the advantage of being collaborative, allowing multiple users to create content for their own games in parallel in the same database. I would like to finish remarking the utility that a generic editor may have for the location-based games, allowing to create content of any subject for whatever the game is and in any place of the world. I also would like to highlight that the editor can be improved in a lot of different ways, for instance, an interesting improvement could be the multi-user support so that each user can create their own games without using the same database that other users.

Design and development of an editor for location-based games

Ortega-Arranz, Alejandro 09 October 2014 (has links)
Nowadays, mobile games and applications have turned around in essential elements in the current society. But, at the same time that world does not stop (society, tendencies, ... it changes daily), mobile games and applications should update and modify their contents. Thus, content providers play an important role and turn around important. The Human Computer Interaction (HCI) group from University of Patras, have developed some mobile games with a playful and educative scope, and also its content editors. But, could be possible stopping developing one editor for each game and make one in common? even could we extend it to other games not developed by the HCI group? This will be our purpose during this document. Trying to create a content editor despite the fact of the differences of the games, logic, user interface and other many aspects which differ them. Therefore, the content provider should be able to create, edit or update the information or content without changing the performance of the games. For carrying this out, first of all we should analyze which things the games have in common and then, to get an abstraction. This abstraction should work for all the games although they have incompatible properties among them. Then, for this kind of properties, we should add somehow a visibility parameter. By this way, that properties will be invisible for games which do not use them. Hence, this common content editor should be able to add, modify and delete objects of the games which have been developed and can be played everywhere in the whole world. Treasure the Moment : Communication as a Scaffold for Mobile Learning Activities

Israel, Rotem January 2016 (has links)
Communication is a fundamental social component of human life and constitutes an indispensable factor in the learning process as it allows the transfer of information between people. Communication supports the interactions that take place in different learning stages and settings and can encourage involvement and cooperation. The "Treasure-HIT" platform, a dedicated environment for designing pedagogical mobile location-based games, encourages social interaction and collaborative learning. This platform, which is social at its base, has limited communication capabilities. Adding such capabilities can overcome this difficulty by providing a more supportive and interpersonal interaction among the involved stakeholders. This thesis explores the users' communication needs for the preparation and enactment of "Treasure-HIT" activities. A design based research was used to analyze the needs in terms of design and technological specifications and develop and implement communication features. Three such features were developed in the course of this thesis: (1) Activities based map, (2) Social media sharing feature (Facebook tasks) and (3) Image gallery. All of those aimed at supporting communication between learners, instructors and their community, before, during and after the activities. Findings show that the developed capabilities enabled new means of communication and contributed to the user experience and learning process. Users appreciated the functionality and ease of use and positively adopted the new features.

Σιντόρης, Χρήστος 17 July 2014 (has links)
This dissertation studies the design of location-based multi-player mobile games. These are games which are played using devices such as PDAs or, more recently, smartphones. The devices allow the players to have access to digital information during the game. An important aspect is that this information is related to the location and state of the player. This context-sensitive information as well as the possibility to play at places of cultural importance or other places of high information density offers the opportunity to use this games for informal learning (e.g. by pupils who visit museums, archaeological parks etc.) The aim of this dissertation has been formulated as "to support the design of location-based mobile games in places of informal learning". We followed a methodology based on design research and we examined the processes of designing, implementing and evaluating of these games. The methodological approach that we followed consisted of three stages. 1. Research clarification: the characteristics of location-based mobile games and of pervasive computing environments were examined, which play a significant role in the development of location-based games. 2. Development of design support, which was conducted in three stages. First, a solution for a real-world design problem was developed, a location-based mobile game for pupils who visit a museum. The result was the game MuseumScrabble. Additionally, the design practices of other design teams were studied. Study of design practices, applying an ethnographic content analysis approach. Six publications were analyzed which concerned three cases of designing, implementing and evaluating games of this kind. Design workshops were conducted where the participating designers, of varying and multi-disciplinary background, designed game concepts which were subsequently analyzed to extract game design patterns. The results of these studies were three design support tools. A design framework, which describes the design space, a set of heuristic design guidelines and a number of game design patters which can support the task of designers. 3. Evaluation of the design support tools. By applying the design support in the development of a new game, «Invisible City: Rebels Vs. Spies», where the tools were employed at stages of the design. By studying the tools using a contextual inquiry technique, where it was asked of designers to use the design support tools in order to design a new game.
